  1. I was blasted at the beginning of the offseason for saying Gagne would get no better than a minor league deal, but here we are. Nice pickup, but I doubt he makes it. He's very injury prone, and that means a number of guys would have to flop to justify keeping him. Dillard and Defelice can do the same for less money.
  2. That is a nice bonus. This group is easily the best hitting group we've had since joining the NL. Big difference from the year we had Sheets, Doug Davis, and Victor Santos in the same rotation. I think its cool we have 6 starters available who had ERAs under 5 last year. Thats rare. Now we just need 1 or 2 to dominate to drag the team ERA down.
  3. Gwynn's career UZR/150 as a CF is -1.8, thats not very good. Corey Hart's career UZR/150 in CF is 3.5, he should be our backup CF. He wasn't last season only because Ned Yost was a moron. He was a part time starter in our division for parts of 2 seasons. His career UZR/150 in CF is 4, so he a pretty solid CF. He, like Gwynn, doesn't hit though. Our reserve OF looks crappy right now, but it did last year too, and then Kapler emerged as an outstanding 4th OF. Hopefully Nixon can do the same, and if not make a trade.
  4. He can't hit, and its becoming clear he never will. Bad draft pick, I really hope the team moves on, but I don't think they will. I think the organization views him as a babysitter for Fielder. Thtas a worthwhile idea, but I don't think its had the desired impact.
  5. Huge game tonight in Green Bay. The Phoenix take on #11 Bulter. UWGB has won 11 of 13, and have always had an outstanding record at home. Coach Kowalczyk is still searching for his 1st big time win in this program, and is on the cusp of his 1st breakthrough season. I'm not sure he is a bigtime coach, but I still hope he becomes one. He does things the right way, and holds his players accountable as people. I'll be there in person tonight, I hope its a huge crowd for a marquee matchup.
  6. C: Salome 1B: Thormon 2B: Bourgois SS: Escobar 3B: Gamel LF: Gillespie CF: Cain RF: Nixon Bench: Heether, Duffy, Maghee, Rottino, Katin 1: Gulin 2: Wright 3: Welch 4: Narron 5: Ginter Bateman, Dillard, Swindle, Smith, Ungs, Pena, Aguilera
  7. I'm not even saying your wrong, I'm just saying how mad I'll be at the Brewers if your right. However, I think dumping Cameron would be counterproductive. Dunn's average value is 3 wins a year, Cameron was worth over 4 last year. I'm with you that I want Dunn, but to improve our team it has to be in cunjuction with a trade that brings pitching help. I think the reason this hasn't happened is because Dunn is still looking for $14 million a season, and he just isn't worth that. He is worth $10 million a year, as Invader pointed out.
  8. According to Fangraphs, Gagne average value over the past 4 seasons was $350 K. Thats under the minimum. He is worth nothing more than a minor league deal. If you project him to put up a 3 1/2ish ERA, he'd need to throw 80 innings to be worth $2 million. I doubt he'd be available for 60 innings.
  9. I will be livid if we need salary relief. Opening day salary last year was $80 million, and finished at $88 million. They made money. Then they raised ticket prices, got renewals on all luxory suits at higher rates, added a major sponsor, and have sold more tickets to date than ever before. We are getting the usual financial windfall a team gets after making the playoffs. I supported the Sebathia trade because making the playoffs helps increase the baseball budgett. Our payroll is looking to be $72 million with the players presently on the roster. Thats about $14 million short if you ask me. I expect a major signing.
  10. Thanks for pointing that out Mass. There's a lot here who claim the Brewers are bad at developing pitchers, and blame the organization for injuring its pitchers. Everybody has pitching prospects ruined by injury. Pitttsburg had more than twice as many college 1st round pitchers get injured than the total number of 1st round pitchers we've drafted since 2000. If anything, we're pretty good at keeping guys healthy. The Brewers will have 2 homegrown pitchers in its starting rotation. That's impressive when you realize how few 1-2 round picks have been used on pitchers. If somehow Sheets resigns, no team in baseball will have more homegrown starters in its rotation.
  11. A package highlighted by Escobar makes sense for both teams. The Tigers are going with Adam Everett as there SS this year, and he's on a 1 year deal. If Escobar suddenly stops developing, he's still just as good as Everett. The Tigers are probably set at catcher, as they've just aquired Gerald Laird. If the Brewers made a mid-season deal for Verlander, the improvement we'd add would be completely negated if we dealt Hardy for him, as we'd then be worse at SS. That would be pointless. I do share the same concerns that Hauser and sbrylski have with verlanders declining performance and velocity. I obviously am only inteested if he's pitching well with good stuff. I also agree with Dhonks about Fielder. I'm suprised the Tigers haven't called about Fielder already. He'd be incredibly popular there, and there going to need to do something to sell some tickets next year.
  12. I don't usually think a hitting coach has much of an impact, but Bill Hall's regression coincided with the term of Jim Skaalen. Hopefully a new voice, combined with lasik, can get Hall back on track. Nothing would change the Brewers more than having the 2005-2006 Bill Hall at 3B. That would be our biggest addition in years.
  13. When I saw you right that I thought for sure it was going to be Brent Brewer. I love Cutter too, but BA loves him even more. Thats great, they have the inside info. I really can't wait to see where our system ranks overall. Last years 21st ranking was way off, a suprising mistake for the very talented BA staff. Will we sneak into the top 5 this year?
  14. We know we can get Swisher for Cameron, but I'm not comfortable with the risk involved with Swisher, but do the Nationals have a player we'd like? They really don't have much. Pittsburg and Cinci are also interested in Swisher or Nady. Could they have a pitcher we like?
  15. These are the kind of things that worry me with Swisher. Theres just so many oddities. Was his poor HR totals at home in 2007 just statistic annomoly, or in part because Oakland is a tough HR park. Then did his 2008 HR totals jump up at home because US Cellular Field inflates HR totals? Or was it just numbers evening out. The HR totals jumping at home in 2008, which drove up his home OPS makes sense because of the ballpark. His showing on the road may be a better example of the player he is. Of course, most players play better at home. Your right, it isn't much data to go on, but he only had 2 successful seasons also. His first full big league season was similar to 2008. He put up bigtime minor league numbers, but did it in major hitters parks/leagues.
  16. A player can adjust his swing to make up for decreased strength. The adjustment could cause an inability to make consistent hard contact. It wouldn't affect his line drive rate, but it could affect how hard he is actually hitting the ball. Poor hitting mechanics would cause more ground balls, not decreased strength. That much more likely explains his drop in average than an entire season of terrible luck. I can buy into bad luck for a half season, but to call an entire season of terrible luck at the same time a player goes through a significant body style change a coincidence is pretty desperate. Also, his home run power did decrease, as his HR/FB rate did not increase, despite the fact that he was playing hlf his games in a stadium that increases Home Runs by 30%. If he was hitting the ball the same as 2006/2007, that % should have increased by a decent margin.
  17. Most keep saying there's a strong possibility that Swisher will rebound, no one is insisting that it will happen for sure. Way to clear that up, but I noticed you completely ignored the question? Is that because it essentially kills your argument?
  18. We did have reports earlier that Melvin turned down an offer of Johnson for Hart, and that was before the Braves added Javier Vazquez and some Japanese starter. There also still negociating with Dereck Lowe. The Braves were seaching for a RH hitting RF, and they didn't fill that need yet. I see no reason why that deal wouldn't still be on the table.
  19. Most keep insisting Swisher will rebound, but nobody wants to address his massive loss in muscle mass. Can a skinny version of Swisher really be expected to hit like the muscled up version of Swisher in 2006?
  20. I agree. As much as I really wanted an established pitcher for Fielder, we didn't have things fall into place for it to happen. LAA missing out on Sebathia and Johnson left them without a surplus of pitching to trade. Tampa struck early trading a starting pitcher when they dealt Edwin Jackson for Matt Joyce. With Dunn available to replace Fielder, we're better of with Dunn and Bucholz+, than with Fielder. We could also some of Bostons prospects for Greinke. However, Boston would have to play Fielder at 1B, so I doubt there interested. If the DH spot was open, I believe they then would be.
  21. Too bad either him or Hart would have to play CF, where there both bad. Swisher's UZR stat doesn't show him to be the impact corner OF and 1B defender the media brags him up to be.
  22. Isn't the huge possiblity of him pitching horribly, like he did last year, a risk? Fixed that for ya. I doubt Mets fans got much entertainment out of the 109 innings he gave with a 5.62 ERA last year. Suppan was significantly better than him last year.
  23. I would because I'm looking at the whole picture. Instead of isolating the only strong part of Swisher's game, his OPS+, I'm looking at him for his total worth, value wins. Swisher was worth just 8.1 over the last 3 years, Cameron was worth 11.7 over the same time period. Swisher was worth 3.8 in his best year, Cameron was worth 4.1 last year. Thats not even factoring in the trickle down effect that bad defense has on a pitching staff. Less outs on balls in play more shorter outings from starters, which means more innings to be soaked up by the pen. That causes more innings pitched by the bullpen, causing decreased performance and more innings pitcher by lesser members of the bullpen.
  24. I have to give Patrick props again after seeing Zimmerman on top of Washington's list. Patrick pimped him again and again before the draft that year, and he couldn't have been more right. Hitting on a small school pitcher is no easy task. Its a shame Zimmerman was a supplemental pick the year before the Brewers started loaded up on supplemental picks. We can only hope 1 of our supplemental picks turns out as well. As for the rest of Washington's list, what a disappointing 2008 for just about every one of there talented prospects had. If their going to re-build through the farm, they have a long road ahead.
  25. Vaughn had a bad season while recovering from shoulder surgury. That was pretty common not too long ago. Swisher regressed a little in 2007 and alot in 2008. Not just his numbers, but his build. He was once strongly built, but is now a rale. Steriods anyone? I'd let someone else figure that out. Too much risk for the small potential payoff. I agree with Briggs, Swisher should have been the perfect hitter for US Cellular Field, which according to Bill James increases homers by a whopping 30%. The fact that the Kenny Williams, a pretty savy GM, dumped him for nothing after giving top prospects to aquire him just 1 year earlier should tell us something about Swisher.
