  1. Sutton's impact was a bit overrated. In three of his four regular season wins, the offense scored 14, 15 and 10 runs. They don't win the ALCS without him throwing a gem against the Angels when they were down 2-0, but he pitched very poorly in the World Series.
  2. neither are on the 40-man roster. whom do you remove? It's a pretty easy call. You remove Yardley and Lopes.
  3. They could see if Garcia would agree to his mutual option for 2022 of $12 million and then give him two year extension beyond that for $35-$38 million. That would bring the total to 3 yrs. $47-50 million that gives team some relief for Cain's final contract year. I don't see him getting 4 years in the open market at age 30. Castellanos got 4 years from the Reds after the 2019 season but he was just turning 28, was coming off an ever better year than Avi is having and had been a bit more consistent over his career.
  4. The Escobar injury coupled with Adames being out for several days really caught them short with very little in reserve at AAA and no ability to make a deal to acquire help. Didn't help that the Reds jumped in ahead of them and claimed Asdrubal Cabrera off waivers. Didn't help either that a 3rd RH bat is down with Taylor being out. Too bad Hernan Perez didn't stick around.
  5. Reds claimed Cabrera off waivers from D-Backs. I'm guessing Brewers would have taken him but Reds had priority. Could be they grabbed him to block the Brewers? Can't see where he's going to get many AB's for Reds.
  6. Brewers already are really short RH bats and need to fill the DH spot too. If Adames can't play that makes it worse. Would they recall Hiura to DH for a couple games? The Twins pitchers are basically AAA guys anyway. He should be able to compete against them.
  7. I'd be looking to see if any more teams release veterans to allow them to hook on to contenders. If they are going to, this is the week they would. Asdrubal Cabrera would be a nice addition to replace Escobar.
  8. We do? Yelich is really the only long-term OF in the majors. JBJ is gone after next year, as is Cain. Garcia is likely to decline his mutual option after this year. Taylor is controllable for awhile, but is he a long-term piece? Mitchell may be ready sometime next year, but I still think OF is actually very much a need moving forward. And with Yelich's salary it would be a plus if the other two OF spots can be filled with pre-arby players.
  9. He's looked more like himself the last 10 days or so prior to last night. He's been more aggressive and less defensive at the plate. The bunt hit in St. Louis ironically further freed him up mentally. He's taking a few less walks and getting more hits. I think that's a good thing.
  10. It's funny but at the time I had mixed emotions. 1981 was such a disjointed contrived year. They played two months, then were on strike the next couple months and then instead of picking up where they left off, they decided to declare teams in first place in the first week of June automatic entrants to the postseason. Those teams then played the so-called "second half" basically for fun and teams that were in last place when the strike started were suddenly even with teams that had performed much better. The Brewers who ended up with the best full season record in the division were forced to go through an extra layer of playoffs to get to the league championships. That Brewer team should have been in the ALCS and not had to beat a Yankee team that was essentially playing exhibitions in August and September.
  11. Which will get him a September roster spot. That works. Looks like it'll be sooner with Taylor ticketed for the IL and need for a DH next weekend vs. Twins.
  12. Opens a roster spot for Vogelbach (.391/.571/.667 at Nashville) I presume. They have a stretch coming up with 8 games in AL parks over 2 1/2 weeks and can use a DH. They can get by with 4 OF and an IF/OF swing man in Peterson.
  13. They're bringing up milner because the bullpen pitched 8 innings yesterday I'd just pitch Ashby out of the pen today and hope he can finish the game after Woodruff. Use Box if necessary. They trust Milner and why wouldn't they? He's hasn't allowed a run in 8 of his 12 appearances. Milner will go back down when they activate Hauser this weekend. Boxberger is more reliable than Ashby closing. Cousins, Sanchez and Suter are all available too. Neither pitched Tuesday and all three had less than 20 pitches last night.
  14. Quite possibly the best thing that could have happened to the Reds today. Arrieta had one good game in the last three months, and it was against the Padres. Reds aren't unhappy and neither am I. Great thing about living in Illinois is the ability to make a nice profit when Arrieta starts.
  15. They won't ... and shouldn't. Go take a look at the first few outings Pomeranz had for the Brewers if you want proof why they shouldn't. Pomeranz was a lot better his first few outings. He fanned 5 in his first 2 innings, both scoreless. His third appearance was a 3 inning start. Only hit he allowed was a HR, but he fanned 3 and Brewers won the game easily. In the appearance he allowed 2 runs, they scored when Hader gave up a 3 run HR. Brewers should DFA him now. He's getting worse with every appearance. He can't be trusted in high leverage situations. So why keep him? If you like him for next year, he'll be available on a minor league deal. Pomeranz was a much more accomplished pitcher with winning teams.
  16. I don't like the Cardinals either but I do like that they don't engage in mass selloffs of their roster. Brewers might exceed win total of their 82 team but that team didn't play AAA teams the last couple months.
  17. Today's a big day. Reds have one more against Phils, then play 7 against the woeful Cubs and Miami. Cubs are worse than Pirates at this point. It's not a stretch that they could cut into the lead before the series in Milwaukee. If the lead is 5 or less on Labor Day, it could go to the last week. Good news is that Castillo has struggled his last couple starts. The Padres are in free fall. They're pitching is a mess. The second wild card is up for grabs.
  18. He's got just 2 K's in his last 5 games (22 PA) and he's been barreling it with more frequency. I think he's starting to turn the corner.
  19. Cubs major issue is starting pitching and relief pitching. Not sure adding Shaw would make them any better. They'll be looking for pitching and outfielders this winter. Hoerner and Madrigal will be back to fortify their middle infield.
  20. I was at Wrigley yesterday. Yelich just missed one that he lifted in the air to left center that was carried to the track by the wind. He looked more comfortable and aggressive at the plate taking good cuts in every AB. I think he's going to break out a bit in the next few weeks, and drive a few out of the park.
  21. Top 5: 1. Buehler 2. Burnes 3. Wheeler 4. Peralta 5. Woodruff Nothing is locked up at this point. A hot stretch by any of those 5 could be the difference
  22. The splitter is a very effective wipeout pitch. He's allowed less than half a hit per inning in 72 career innings in AAA and walked less than 2 per. Either he commands his low 90s fastball very well or cuts it because he misses barrels. He's got one ability Curtiss doesn't have too. Availability.
  23. Have to wonder how thorough the exam was when Curtiss was acquired. Payton Henry was a big price to pay for a guy with a bad elbow.
  24. I'm in Elk Grove Village, a block north of Du Page County. Storms keep developing and are all moving on basically the same line toward the north side of Chicago. There's breaks but not enough to get a game started. I don't see them getting it in tonight.
  25. It was a terrible move and not a peep from the Brewer telecast. Bases loaded, no outs, you concede one run when you start the bottom of the inning with a runner on 2nd. In fact you should always concede the first run. One run shouldn't beat you. Posey hit a routine double play grounder.
