  1. I'm still trying to figure out what's not to like about Hoby Milner? Sure he's given up some hits and had a couple rough outings but they've not been because he's walked people and it's not like he can't miss bats. He's been a bit unlucky on batted balls with a .500 BABIP against but he's still got 16 K's in 11 2/3 innings. He has allowed zero runs and 3 hits in 15 AAA innings with 27 Ks and 1 BB. Apparently he's been ok with BABIP against at Nashville.
  2. Rizzo turned down an offer this past offseason from the Cubs that was around 3 years in the $45-50 million range. He thought he was worth Freddie Freeman type money. I think there's some bitterness on his part and his days will end with the Cubs either in July or September. Now there aren't a lot contending teams out there where Rizzo would be a significant upgrade but he would certainly be an upgrade for the Brewers. All the Brewers need to do is surpass any draft compensation the Cubs might get for his departure. Brewers even have a controllable young 1B they can include in the deal in Tellez (part of the reason I think they acquired him). Rizzo isn't what he was but he's still a quality hitter.
  3. Nobody's going to take either Cain or JBJ unless Brewers pay a minimum of 75% of their remaining contracts and they add a really good prospect or Stearns get MA approval to eat a substantial contract. White Sox ate some money to DFA Adam Eaton. Nobody is likely to claim him so he'll become a FA shortly and Brewers would be able to sign him for the minimum. He's been lousy too but he was key member of Nats world championship team in 2019.
  4. How much longer can they keep trotting out JBJ and his .524 OPS especially when they have to keep playing Yelich and hoping he returns to a fraction of what he was? Hasn't Taylor shown enough to play every day? His OPS isn't all star caliber but it is .224 higher than Bradley. Sure JBJ saves a run now and then with his defense but not enough to justify having his bat in the lineup in a playoff push. Maybe Cain can help in a few weeks and Peterson can fill in on the corners but they need lots more production from the OF.
  5. Would you consider a year and a couple months of Mancini big time enough? Tellez and Lauer might be attractive to the O's too.
  6. Everyone talks about Small as the centerpiece of an offer. Why not a guy like Lauer who's controllable for 3 more seasons? Brewers could then find a veteran rental to take his place in the back end of the rotation the rest of the year.
  7. Maybe he's a piece they need to get the 1B they really want this year. Lets say it's Aguilar and Miami wants a controllable bat to replace him in their lineup along with a prospect. Brewers had nobody that fit that bill with Vogelbach out.
  8. Well they can still move on (and probably should) from Hiura, they can't move on from Yelich. Which is why development of Mitchell and Gray is so critical. They absolutely need them to be core players in 2023 and 2024 respectively.
  9. Brewers are 15-11 in Pina's starts. His 18% K rate is better than his career rate. It's tough getting out of a slump starting 1-2 games per week. He'll get some big hits. His slump gets magnified on days like yesterday when he's not the only backup in the lineup or when Counsell bats him way too far up in the lineup.
  10. Hitting well is an understatement. He's slugging .552 with a K rate of 11%. He made only 3 errors in 41 starts at SS. Trade seems to have helped him and Brewers ended up with a guy at SS who's been performing like an MVP candidate. Good for all, though Arcia could make the return seem rather meager.
  11. If Strickland continues to perform, I'm not sure another addition is needed. He's been part of winning teams and gives him that extra veteran they can turn to. Let's see how he's doing through this tougher stretch of schedule.
  12. I think Rasmussen was the key for TB. They could even see him as a starter as most of his minor league experience is starting. The trade really was Adames for Rasmussen which was a win/win.
  13. He's solidly entrenched as the 4th starter at this point.
  14. That is what happens on this board though. Years ago I pitched a trade around Scooter Gennett et al. for Hunter Renfroe and was scalded for not giving enough in return for our lefty hitting scrub 2B. Overvaluing of our own guys (AKelly and his shoulder) and belittling others' is the default here. Another thing is the on going love affair with former Brewers or those that once stopped at a Culvers. I don't get it. That "scrub" 2nd baseman put up OPS+ numbers of 123 and 125 in 2017 and 2018 in which he was an All Star. Renfroe's best OPS+ season was 120. Had Gennett not suffered a severe groin injury in spring of 2019 which derailed his career, he might still be producing. Perhaps he was overvalued but releasing him and getting nothing back was undervaluing him.
  15. Ashby was more effective starting the first month at Nashville. I think the move to the pen was a temporary move as they figured he'd have more value as a reliever in 2021. Long term I think they view him as a starter. The injury to Anderson, and the failure of anyone to step up as the 7th starter, makes this the logical move. I think Counsell will use him 3 innings or basically one time through the order.
  16. It's the kind of weather that's conducive to cramping. Hopefully, that's all it is.
  17. Paden was very young for the Atlantic League that's got plenty of veterans with major league experience. By the way, is anyone ever going to give Caleb Gindl another shot? Last time he saw affiliated ball was 2018. He's raking to the tune of .302/.406/.605 in the Atlantic League so far this year. You'd think with guys hurt all over baseball, somebody would give him a another shot. His major league numbers weren't all that bad.
  18. I think it's fair to say that Moran would hit more HR playing half his games at AmFam and getting to face Pittsburgh's staff instead of the Brewers 19 times a year. Moran has 24 road home runs and just 15 at home. He's slow, but no slower than Shaw and he hits for a considerably higher average than either Shaw or Vogelbach.
  19. Ethan Small is now at Nashville. The timing with Anderson's injury is probably not coincidence.
  20. Coors: .299/.385/.607 Away: .234/.359/.325 Cron has a career .466 slugging percentage. Most of that career wasn't spent with the Rockies.
  21. Logan Morrison is back playing for Reds AAA affiliate in Louisville. He's played about a week and is 8 for 23. I'm sure the Reds aren't looking to assist the Brewers but he is blocked and I suppose he's got an opt out at some point.
  22. Why not Cron?? Was anyone paying attention to what he did against the Brewers this past weekend? Might take a little overpay to get him before Friday, but they can't afford to have no production at first base.
  23. Yes Fisher is out of options, but they need Taylor's bat in the lineup. You make room to keep Fisher by DFA'ing Peterson. That gets them down to 5 infielders for a while, but they can bring back Reyes in another week. Yardley would be eligible to replace Anderson, but I think they'd go with lefty Perdomo or Weber who could give them length if needed to replace Milner.
  24. Ethan Small was the best pitcher in the Southeastern Conference in 2019, which is a top collegiate league. He's not just pitching in AA, he's dominating AA. Peralta was just 21 and had a handful of starts at AAA when he debuted in 2018. I'd argue Small has much more of a resume than Freddy did at the time he was called up. All the reports on Small when he was drafted was that he was most finished college pitcher in the draft. If not for last year being lost to covid, he'd almost certainly be at AAA now.
  25. Cron doesn't play the OF but he'd be more affordable and he's killing LH pitching. I think he'd be ideal in a 50-50 split with Vogelbach.
