  1. Well Corey Hart might be available come July and he could be an upgrade in LF or 1B. Seattle appears to be going nowhere and he's only signed for this year.
  2. Torre was from the '60s. Del Crandall is still with us. While not 'big' names, Gene Conley, Felix Mantilla and Don McMahon are still around too. Frank (Joe's brother) Torre was part of the World Series teams in the 50's and he's still around. Torre played significant role in both 57 and 58 in place of oft injured Joe Adcock. Juan Pizarro and Joey Jay are both still around as well. Both were young hurlers with tons of promise that Brave brass back then inexplicably dealt away after the 1960 season because they panicked after Pittsburgh had played way over their heads that year and because Brave brass thought highly of Bob Hendley and Don Nottebart. Wonder why the Braves ended up in Atlanta? There's a lot to it, but had they hung on to Jay and Pizzaro, the team might well have won another pennant or two in succeeding years and Atlanta would have ended up with an expansion team.
  3. Steve Blass said this about the Brewers last weekend and I'm paraphrasing: "They might be surprising the national pundits, but believe me within the division we all knew what a healthy Brewer team was capable of so I'm not surprised at all" The "national" pundits at ESPN and MLB Network focus 75% of their attention on the NL East. The Cardinals are the safe pick every year the NL Central and that allows those guys to pretty much ignore everyone else within the division.
  4. For all the doom and gloom surrounding the state of the Brewer farm system, they are getting some pretty impressive pitching performances so far at all levels. Somebody's doing something right.
  5. I'm sure they can get a rehabbing Hellweg through waivers in spring of 2015 so they can assign him to AAA. Really he's not a major leaguer until he can command his stuff better anyway. Who knows if that will ever happen.
  6. Morneau would have been a great fit. Yeah Coors has helped him but considering what the Brewers were prepared to pay Loney, Morneau was just as attractive if not more. The guy's been a great hitter and overcome a lot. His numbers have been down since the concussion issue, but the guy still knows how to hit so a rebound when further removed from dizzy spells was predictable at some point. Can't believe the Canadian connection didn't come into play.
  7. He was a pretty serviceable utility guy for the Giants in 08 and 09. He's wearing that gigantic collar from 0 for 37 with the 2011 Dodgers and teams are probably reluctant to give him another shot. Didn't Counsell have a longer O fer that year though? Rickie has to be on borrowed time. They will have 40 man spot when Hellweg ends up on the 60 day DL.
  8. It's because throwing multiple days is much tougher on the arm than throwing many pitches in one day. Think of it like gas mileage. You have two cars of the same model with the same amount of gas. You're probably going to travel more miles driving on a highway than you would driving on city street with stop lights, even if the speed limits were the exact same for both. I'm more concerned about Thornburg and Smith than K-Rod who's been through the grinder before. They really need a healthy Kintzler back to take some of the load.
  9. Shawn Zarraga! Ok I said it. I'll keep quiet now.
  10. If I had time to look I'd find posts where I lobbied for Liriano, Morse and Morneau well before they were signed. I was taken to task by many on here on each of those. That's not to say I haven't missed many times either, but I did specifically bring up those three. The "red flags" on those guys were in reality "yellow flags" and there's a huge difference. Discerning the difference separates the great GM's from the good. Melvin falls in the good category more often than not but Reynolds wasn't a bad signing. Still Hart is producing for Seattle too and could have been brought back relatively cheaply.

  12. Again it's not like McGehee's poor play in 2011 cost them anything either. They won the division by 6 games. He wasn't on a long term deal. His fall off led to Ramirez signing that caused plenty of angst but turned out okay. Would a productive McGehee helped in the postseason? Not the way the pitching staff was getting drilled by St. Louis.
  13. Hellweg to the 60 man is a no-brainer.
  14. Tough news for Hellweg. Hoping he comes back better than ever with improved command. Well the Brewers were not immune but when it happens to your #9 starter, you start thinking it might be your year.
  15. Reynolds isn't ideal as a starting firstbaseman, but there didn't look to be many other options given we weren't the only team looking for a quality firstbaseman in the offseason and little happened. Multiple teams were interested in Ike Davis during the offseason, but the Mets were asking for to much, like wanting Thornburg from the Brewers. Loney i didn't want Melvin to give a pricey multi-year deal. I'd rather have Reynolds on a cheap one year deal than having caved to the Mets for Davis or given Loney a three year deal. As for relying to much on veterans over young prospects in the system, i think Doug has been ok on that front. He traded Aoki who was the leadoff hitter to allow Davis to start in left. Gennett is starting much more than Weeks. Segura was handed the starting job right away. Among the everyday players, i can't think of a single prospect in AAA or AA who i think should be starting instead. I'd probably rather see Morris on the team than Overbay though. On the pitching staff i can't see anyone in the minors who i think should currently be on the roster instead. Nelson likely is the guy who will be called up if/when a starter needs to go on the DL, so i'm fine with him being in AAA for now at least. Who am i missing? Two guys I think Melvin overlooked at 1B were Mike Morse and Justin Morneau. Both were excellent buy low opportunities but we heard nary a blurb about any interest on the part of the Brewers. Morse is less of a defensive liability at 1B and always raked in Miller Park. Morneau started showing flashes of his old self at times last year.
  16. Wang had never pitched above rookie ball, doesn't know the language and didn't know any of teammates until 2 months ago. It's almost akin to using a 12 year old. I wouldn't keep him myself, but if they do, he'll only pitch in blowout losses and there haven't been too many of those. Roenicke doesn't want to give away games early. He probably figures if one or two wear out, Melvin will go out and find replacements. Getting Kintzler back will help. Gorzelanny should be available sooner or later. Wooten will be on call too.
  17. Herrera never caught in the minors according to baseballreference.com and anybody can catch bullpens. I suppose Bianchi could finish a game but if Lucroy went down and had to miss a few games, they'd still have to make a roster move. My guess is they'll try to get through today and tomorrow with just Lucroy. Then when Kintzler comes off the DL on Friday, they'll DFA Figaro and option out Herrara which would allow them to purchase Diaz' contract, leaving the active roster at 24 plus the suspended Maldanado. Then Bianchi becomes the 4th OF until Schafer returns. Of course Rickie could just be released and Diaz brought up to replace him.
  18. if green isn't on the 40-man roster by 15 june, he can declare free agency. At 15-5, I think they can wait on Green. Let him get some AB's at AAA. I've been critical of the Overbay signing, but doing what's he's doing, filling in here and there, mostly PH and defensively, he's not hurting them. He hasn't gotten a lot of hits but his AB's have been decent. He can still get the bat through the zone. That's all you can ask. Reynolds has been Reynolds. As long as he's hitting with power, he's the starter anyway.
  19. Scooter continues to answer the doubters. The kid can play.
  20. I'm the lone voice but I think Gennett would be fine playing everyday against either type pitching. He's a fundamentally good enough hitter that he's going to get his share hits vs. lefties over time if he sees them regularly. He was up there yesterday with a runner on 3rd and one out in extra innings against a very tough lefty and although he ended up popping out after fouling off a couple, he was facing some nasty, nasty stuff. Besides, he has the same number of hits vs. lefties as Weeks does this season, two.
  21. I posted it elsewhere but this is the problem with having a 12th pitcher that effectively only pitches when games are out of reach. You get a stretch of games where the pen logs a lot of innings in tight games, and suddenly there's a problem. It's not like it could not be foreseen either. These stretches happen every year to every team. Though I realize Wang is a very intriguing prospect and I understand wanting to have him, you can't make decisions that could negatively affect your major league team in a year where they are poised to contend just for the sake of one particular prospect.
  22. Pittsburgh's television crew has high respect for Brewers. Forget which one it was, maybe Blass, but their general consensus is that Pirates got a reprieve last year with all Brewer's injuries and suspensions and that every other team in the division knew the Brewers were contenders going in unlike most of the rest of baseball. Blass tried to uplift his audience with the mention that Brewers rotation lacked depth should there be an injury. Of course outside of Milwaukee, nobody knows Nelson, nor is paying attention to Fiers back in form, or realize that Thornburg is a starter in waiting as could Smith once Gorzellany is healthy.
  23. I dunno, Maldy threw and appeared to land a pretty good haymaker. He might get 5 games for that. Besides if Gomez gets say 3 games, they are also short on OF especially with Schafer on DL and Bianchi's an emergency OF as well. That's not to mention a pen that's very stretched that could use an extra arm. I'd be shocked if there were no roster moves.
  24. Assuming it is too soon to jettison Overbay or Weeks and don't 60 day DL Gorzy - What would be the complications if they took Figaro off the 40 man roster? Would some MLB club go after the 30 year old for their 25 man or could he opt to go to some other teams minor leage system thinking he would have a better shot? Lots of team are having bullpen issues so there's a chance he'd be claimed. Not that it's a loss they couldn't endure but if they were thinking about jettisoning Weeks (and after watching his feeble AB's lately why wouldn't they?), this may just speed up the process 2-3 weeks. I think Overbay's safe for now. His AB's have been of considerable higher quality than Rickie's.
  25. Maldanado suspension = end of Weeks?? Diaz seems like the likely guy, but what about Shawn Zarraga? I would assume Diaz has no options left, so they'd have to expose him to waivers to send him back down. You never know if some team might in need of a backup might grab him. Zarraga could be around a couple days, and be optioned back sort of a reward for a torrid start.
