  1. How about Cameron and Hall for Johnny Damon? Damon's got one year left at $13 million and a partial no-trade so whether it would be possible, I don't know but he'd be the guy I'd like on their roster.
  2. Considering their rotation might be Zambrano, Peavey, Harden, Dempster, and Lilly, they could have 8 Craig Counsells in their lineup and it would be scary.
  3. I find it interesting that the Hall rumor starts after CC meets with Yankees. Cashman probably asked if there were any players in addition to Cameron who would make becoming a Yankee easier. Glad to hear the Brewers look like they'll bring back Lamb. Even if Gamel eventually takes over at 3rd, Lamb is great in the role of lefty PH. If Hall is traded, it could open up a roster spot for Casey McGehee who's having a nice winter ball season.
  4. He's trying to increase Weeks' value. Your bargaining position is much stronger if you appear content with a player. Isn't it a little late to talk Weeks up after you've shown a lack of confidence in him by going out and getting Durham for the stretch run last season? I'm not saying Weeks is a terrible leadoff option, but it was the Brewers who decided to take him out of that role last August. The fact is the Brewers need help at the top of the order and they need a lefthanded bat. Weeks does and should have some trade value whether Melvin talks him up or not. Talking him up like Melvin did in light of last season sounds hollow to me.
  5. What is it about the fascination of some about certain guys? It seems every year somebody brings up Patterson. If he were any good, somebody would want him. He's had 3,466 major league at bats and he's proven he's a lousy hitter. How much more evidence do we need?
  6. Gordon's prime did overlap with the last several fine years of Charlie Gehringer. Frankly neither Gordon, nor Bobby Doerr for that matter, were any near in the class of Gehringer who might be one of the most underappreciated great players of all time. Nobody talks about Gehringer but he was right there with the all time greats of his day like Gehrig etc.
  7. Torre was a heck of a player and an athlete. He was so good offensively early in his career that on days he didn't catch for the Braves, they would play him at 1B to keep his bat in the lineup. Eventually, he proved to be a decent 3B. Ironically, it's his versatility that may keep him out as a player. Had he stayed strictly a catcher and put up numbers then he'd have been one of the all time great catchers. Still, I think he belongs in. For a guy that didn't run all that well to hit nearly .300 for his career is quite impressive.
  8. Gordon did have pretty good power for a righthanded hitter in Yankee stadium. Judging from his impressive RBI totals, my guess is he hit behind DiMaggio and had a lot of opportunities. The 2 years he missed during the war were right in his prime. No doubt his career numbers would be more impressive otherwise. As for Santo missing again, well it would have been ironic on the same day as the Tribune filed bankruptcy, but I will contend that Santo needed to have been near the top of his game for 2 more seasons than he was. That old Cub was done at age 34 when he hit just .221 in part time duty with the White Sox. Even in those days, true HOF'ers were guys who played into their late 30's. In my mind, Santo never reached the level of stardom of a Mathews who's career he overlapped. Eddie was the standard for excellence at the position in those days. Santo was on the level of Ken Boyer who also has never gotten in. There's no way Santo should get in if Boyer isn't in.
  9. nate82, Both Griffey and Thomas are still absolute locks.
  10. Coffey wasn't a FA so this hardly qualifies as earth shattering.
  11. I think Melvin is open to Sheets returning. I think Ben Sheets is done with Milwaukee. He wasn't always treated the best here in Milwaukee, and if he signs and gets hurt - he will be booed mercilessly again. Ben would be better off pitching in a new location where the fan base stands behind him. (Plus, he would like an American League team closer to Texas) I'm sorry, but Sheets earned the so-called "treatment" he got in Milwaukee. I don't recall that much booing (many fans supported him very well), but when you aren't there year after year when your team needs you most, fans anywhere are not going to be pleased.
  12. I'm thrilled Shouse declined. Imagine getting a sandwich pick for 40 year old loogy who would have been behind Stetter in the pecking order anyway. They got all they could have expected out of Shouse. It was time to let another team roll the dice on him anyway.
  13. 3 year opt out clause = We'll sign you to the deal you really wanted from the Giants who can't afford you and Zito right now, then let you go there in 3 years when Zito's deal will be down to it's final 2 years. Great strategic move in my opinion.
  14. Of all the comments from Melvin, I find those about Weeks to be the most curious. Here's a guy he felt compelled to replace down the stretch last season, and now he's somehow basically untouchable? Which is it Doug? You say one thing "Weeks was near the top in runs scored for leadoff men blah, blah, blah", then you go out and find a guy (Durham) to boost the offense after which Weeks, when he did play, was hitting 7th, not leadoff.
  15. It's unrealistic to think Cameron at 36 who's a FA after this season is going to bring back a top of the line major league ready starting pitcher. Melvin mentioned that the Brewers lack starters at AAA who could provide rotation depth. Beyond Kennedy and Hughes, the Yankees still have some guys (like a Chase Wright or Alfredo Aceves) that fit that description who if combined with Cabrera make for a fair return. They also have young relievers like the aformentioned Coke (a starter most of his minor league career), Sanchez or David Robertson.
  16. I was a Brave fan. I attended my first Braves game at age 5 in 1958. In the heartbreaking year of 1965, I saw 7 Braves games. While at one of those games (the Braves were in their lame-duck season), I searched the out of town scores to pick a team to follow. I picked the Kansas City A's as I figured them to be the most obscure. Later either that year or the next The Sporting News ran an article titled "Finley dickering to move A's to Milwaukee". That possibility (it turned out nobody in Milwaukee wanted Finley) sealed it. I became an A's fan. I saw the A's in Milwaukee in 68 and 69 play the White Sox. I still remember seeing a young Reggie Jackson blast a long one off of Hoyt Wilhelm in 1968. When the Brewers came to town, I was excited but still emotionally attached to the A's. Frankly the Brewers didn't have any players that I really latched on to. That changed in 1971 when Johnny Briggs came over from the Phillies. By 1972 I was getting serious about the Brewers. Of course that was the year my former team, the A's started their 3-peat.
  17. I think Villy could be just as good closing as Jenks, for less money so I wouldn't make that deal.
  18. The White Sox don't need a SS. They've made it clear that Alexi Ramirez will be their SS next year. They have 2 needs: CF and back of rotation starting pitching. They also are not completely set at 3B. Cameron who came up with the White Sox might make some sense. I doubt he would be enough to get Jenks. I'm not sure who would fill the bill for their other need though I could see any team wanting Villanueva either as reliever or back end starter. Williams in the past has expressed some interest in Hall but that was before his tough 08 season. I'm very wary of Jenks. His K total went down last year. He's had some physical issues. The fact that the Sox are shopping him has be extremely suspicious.
  19. Melvin has put the Brewers in a tough position. He's offered CC enough that he can use it to entice other teams to get involved (the message is, I'll take less than the Yankee offer from the right team, but the Brewers aren't my number 1 choice), but it's not enough to seal the deal with the Yankee offer out there and other teams hinting but not getting involved. It's an untenable position for the Brewers who have to move on.
  20. I like Lowe a lot but not at the figures that have been thrown around. Given his age, you need more of a discount.
  21. Griffey is done. He was a Hall of Fame player with the emphasis on was.
  22. Not possible, it's virtually certain they'll non-tender him. Otherwise, they couldn't cut his salary more than 20%.
  23. Please don't put Julio and closer in the same sentence. He's got a good arm and might be useful (ie his meltdowns don't quite match Turnbow's), but I wouldn't trust him in the closer role. He walks way too many.
  24. If affects more that just Detroit. How many of those losing jobs in Janesville are Brewer fans? Dealerships employ a lot of people too and there's going to be quite a few that go out of business in the next 18 months.
  25. Greene's an above average defensive SS who 2 years ago hit 27 HR and drove in 97 runs. This is a good pickup by the Cardinals.
