  1. Even if they played Thursday in wet conditions, it might prompt Piniella to rest all his regulars (including Harden) to avoid injuries. Just imagining a worst case scenario of the Mets playing a doubleheader Sunday vs. the Fish, then playing an afternoon game Monday vs. the Marlins and another game vs. the Cubs at night, then an afternoon playoff game Tuesday vs the Brewers boggles the mind.
  2. Why not Mike Lamb? His numbers for the Astros in 06 and 07 were terrific: .307/.361/.475 in 06 (381 AB) and 07: .289/.366/.453 (311 AB's). He's gone from a defensive liability early in his career to become at least adequate at 3rd and versatile enough to have played some OF and a lot of 1B. Besides, the Twins still owe him $3.5 million next year, so he's cheap to the Brewers. A platoon of Lamb and Hall has a chance to be quite productive. Lamb seems very comfortable in the NL Central.
  3. Phillies figure to be affected too. The forecast for Philadelphia isn't any better. I don't think overall it affects the race though it might affect those teams ability to get their rotations in order for the playoffs. It would undoubtedly help the Brewers to delay a one game playoff, especially of say both Phillies and Mets are playing doubleheaders on Monday.
  4. Living in the Chicago burbs, now I have a reason to head over to Geneva to see Rattlers play Kane County. Haven't been there since Fielder was with Beloit.
  5. I don't like that scenario. Planning on a short start for CC (on short rest) followed by another short start likely from Yo could be disasterous. They'd be better off with Yo on Wednesday and CC with full rest on Thursday. That should give the pen a full day of rest heading into Cub series where it's like the pen will be needed. Granted that takes CC out of commission for a Sunday start, but the Cubs are a righthand dominant team that he hasn't fared well against. Sticking CC in there off back to back to back short rests and he's likely to be shelled. I'd rather start Bush on Sunday vs. the Cubs where he's going to face the hittable Sean Marshall or Jason Marquis. You could still use CC (on 2 days rest) for an inning or two in relief if needed, but you very well might need CC to face Mets. Mets are more vulnerable to lefthanders than righthanders.
  6. I'd go: Tuesday: Bush Wednesday: Gallardo or Parra Thursday: Sabathia Friday: Sheets Saturday: McClung Sunday: Bush Sabathia will be held back for 1 game playoff if needed though I wouldn't rule out him being used in relief on Sunday. Parra matches up much better at home vs. Pirates. If Yo can't go, I think he gives them best option. I might consider going Sabathia Wednesday and Sunday and Bush Saturday if Sheets can't go at all. Then McClung would go Friday. Suppan's failed in big games all month. None were bigger than the last game in Philly and he failed miserably. I'd start Difelice over him. A big reason I'd try to hold CC back for a playoff is he doesn't match up well vs. Cubs at all. Soriano's got his number big time and their other RH bats can hurt you.
  7. Backupcatchers, The Cubs were in a similar situation with Mark Prior last offseason though draft compensation didn't really figure in. If the Cubs wanted to keep Prior, they would have had to offer him around $3 million in arby. They weren't obviously convinced Prior would be able to pitch in 08, so that was too much for them to swallow. What they tried to do was to offer Prior a 2 year guaranteed deal with a real low amount (say $500K) for the second year to make the total deal $3.5, or a more reasonable $1.75 million per year. (Numbers aren't exact but approximations). Prior figured he'd rebound in 08 and be worth much more than that so he rejected the Cub offer, ended up signing for the Padres for a million and now who knows if he'll ever see the major leagues again.
  8. No, he's not like Braun. Braun is signed through 2015 at quite favorable terms to the Brewers. Even if they wanted to, there's no reason to think Hardy would agree to a 4-5 year deal. There's also no LaPorta around to replace Braun and there is an Escobar. I would have no objection if they wanted to keep Hardy another year and move him to 3B or 2B, but ultimately, that might lower his trade value by bringing him within a year of FA. So the time may be right to move him and get top value (ala Cain) back. (edit: long nested quote --1992)
  9. I thought he looked like his old self yesterday for the first time in ages. He was taking very good cuts and making good contact. Hopefully that translates in to a monster week just at the right time. A hot Fielder and Braun together could carry this team right on in.
  10. "I would almost rather see Brantley in center next year." Absolutely. Even throw Weeks out there, Hardy to 2B and Escobar to SS makes more sense than pretending a lineup with a bunch of guys who are virtually the same hitter is going to be productive. All that does is make it easy for the opposing pitcher. He doesn't have to adjust his approach. That's assuming Cameron at 36 isn't completely done which is a huge assumption.
  11. Cameron has been worse than awful lately bklynbrew crew. 8 for 68 with 29 K's this month, a .200 OBP and .191 slugging. He's showing his age. Hart's always been streaky. It's magnified now, but that's who he's been since he came up. For all his flaws though Hart's still been more productive than Cameron, won't cost $10 million next year and could still improve as a hitter.
  12. When Braun looks like Braun as he did today and Fielder is hitting as he has for a week, anything is possible even overcoming 4 K's by the leadoff hitter.
  13. I still say Juan Pierre playing everyday in CF hurts you less than sending Suppan out there every 5 days. Pierre can still run, is a great bunter, and doesn't strike out and plays a position that the Brewers don't yet have a commitment for beyond this year. Pierre has negatives too obviously: no power, seldom walks, terrible arm, but if he gets back to hitting close to .300, he'll at least get on at a .330-.340 clip and create some havoc on the bases. I also like my chances of getting a runner in from 3rd with less than 2 outs a lot better with Pierre than with a K artist like Cameron. Why pay Cameron $10 million and Suppan $12.5 million in 2009, when if you dealt Suppan for Pierre, you'd be paying just $10 million for Pierre? Granted you'd still owe Pierre another $18.5 over next 2 seasons, but if he has a comeback year, he might be tradeable down the road. The Suppan signing was a mistake, especially the way they structured it. They are really in a bind with that contract. No solution is very good.
  14. Boy Jeenius, Melvin was blessed with multiple high draft picks and although he inherited a bad team on paper, it had players that had value. He made some sharp moves early on, like Podsednik, and a few others. Taking this team from where it was to around .500 wasn't all that difficult. A lot of guys could have done that. But he's had a team for 5 straight seasons that at some point was either in control of playoff berth or within 4 games of one after July 1st and he hasn't closed the deal. Much of that is on Yost, but who hired Yost? Sabathia was a great move, but he fell into Melvins' lap. It didn't take a genius. Had Cleveland not been devastated by injuries, that deal never happens. Jack Z was the guy who drafted the prospects that Melvin gave the edge over other teams. Melvin has had a relatively long run here. A clean house is required.
  15. Well if the Giants threw in Winn, Bowker and a top prospect it might be worth thinking about. But no way do you give up both guys just for Cain.
  16. Getting back to the theme of this thread, I think it's clear that this core (Weeks, Hardy, Hart, Fielder, Braun, Hall) is going to have to be broken up in some manner to address weaknesses in pitching and to balance out an offense that is far to righthanded, and far too prone to strikeouts. But they can't sell low (Hall or Weeks) and expect anything. I'd shop 2 guys, Hardy and Hart. Hardy because his value is high and his replacement is ready and Hart because he's far too streaky, lacking in patience and not a prime time player. Weeks should be tried in CF where his athleticism would be best used. 2nd basemen that are reliable defensively and can handle a bat aren't that hard to find. As for Hall, they are victimized by his contract. I think a new manager and new coaches are what Hall needs for a chance to rebound to the player he was a couple years ago. I also think have more contact hitters in the lineup would allow Hall to be Hall instead of trying to be something he's not. Fielder just needs to regain his focus fulltime. He also needs to drop 20 pounds, maybe start eating meat, and get help in the lineup from a quality lefthanded bat.
  17. "Kendall has certainly earned his contract". A .652 OPS and 46 RBI is earning your contract? He's barely adequate bordering on awful. You have to be kidding on this one. Miller in a wheelchair might have given them more than Kendall has. Cameron? 130 K's in 408 AB'S? That figures out to over 190 in 600 AB's. How about that robust .127 BA as the team has tanked in Sept. Not even acceptable for half his contract much less valuable.
  18. The blowing big lead trend really began the afternoon of June 19th. You might recall, that was the day Bush didn't allow a hit until the 8th inning. Brewers led 8-0 after 7. Toronto got 1 in the eighth, then 6 in the 9th and had the tying run on when the game finally ended. I've seen a lot of bad Brewer teams over the years, but I've never seen one as prone as this one is to cough up huge leads in the 9th inning. Apparently all those losing teams in Pittsburgh affected Torres. He doesn't know how to win.
  19. Think how it is living in Illinois with the Cub hysteria. Weekends are a little easier. I can get into football, or this week the Ryder Cup. Oh I'll check on games but I'm pretty well done watching games through. I'm almost certain this team has one more tease in them. They always do but this is a bunch of losers in my book. I actually can't wait for multiple trades this offseason so I can at least hope for different results.
  20. Iorg was brought in under the Brewer hiring philosophy of if you are a pal of the boss, you are hired.
  21. 26 years of utter frustration summed up in one afternoon. The Cub fans suffering is nothing and I mean nothing what it's like being a Brewer fan.
  22. fondybrewerfan is right, you have to offer him arbitration to get 2 picks. If he's damaged goods, he'd be likely to accept the arby number if offered. Cubs tried to hold on to Prior in somewhat similar situation with a very modest 2 year offer where they lowballed him the 2nd year. Prior gambled he'd come back this year and ended up with a $1 million deal from Padres. In retrospect Prior should have taken the Cub deal which would have been worth $3.5 million or so as I recall.
  23. Well as I view it, the choice now is: 1. Pay Sheets an inflated amount for one more year (via arbitration) which given his injury status he'd be smart to accept. 2. Offer him an incentive laden shorter term contract for lesser guaranteed dollars in 09. 3. Kiss him and the 2 draft picks goodbye by not offering arby because if you don't want to risk having to pay him if he accepts arby, you have no choice.
  24. Nobody's touched on the real story here. Questions galore in my mind. Why was this covered up? Where was the media on this? Why did Yost let him complete a 1-0 game? Who were Schroeder and Anderson trying to kid the day Sheets supposedly couldn't "get feeling" in his hand after hitting a ball off the end of the bat a start or two back? Did this have anything to do with the attempt to get Gallardo back on the mound this year? What effect does this have on A. Sheets value in the FA market and B. Does this mean it's more likely he'll sign with the Brewers or less likely? First the coverup. I can see why Ben wouldn't want it out there, but is there some unwritten rule that you don't spill the beans and hurt a guy's value by revealing an injury? The Media: Oh I forgot it's Tom Haudricourt The complete game shutout: Maybe this is an underlying reason Yost is gone Schroeder and Anderson sure offered a convenient excuse about why it took so long for Sheets to get ready that inning and had the trainer, manager and pitching coach on the mound. While we're at it, how about that "groin" issue in the Mets game. Yeah right. I thought it was foolish to try to get Gallardo back. Now I'm convinced this is why. I think Sheets blew his cover and it's going to cost him big time. He went from a 3-4 year $75 million neighborhood, to if he's lucky 2 year incentive laden deal at best. Personally I wouldn't guarantee him more than $8 million for one year with an extra million for ever 50 IP he pitches in 09, and a team option for say $12 million in 10.
  25. I think the Brewers will dip into the FA market for one reliever: Juan Cruz. He just makes the most sense to me in that he has the stuff to close but since he hasn't done it, he's not going to command inflated closer money. That will make their bullpen core Torres, Riske, Cruz, Stetter, Villanueva (who also could figure back in the starter picture). I think it's only 50-50 that they bring back Shouse. He's getting up there and they might want some fresher arms. This assumes full recover from Riske too. I think the rest of the pen will be comprised of guys brought to spring training on minor league deals. I'd look for them to load up on those types. Dillard could figure in too.
