  1. And I was getting flak for suggesting Ivan Nova? Lyles has been the worst starter in baseball the last 6 weeks.
  2. I understand Freitas is hitting .370, but why not call up Nottingham and have him in a 70-30 or 60-40 timeshare with Pina? Because hitting .370 is a lot better than hitting .270? Nottingham might be a guy you can include in a package but hitting .370 is impressive at any level. Everyone discounted Garrett Cooper too when he raked at CS in 2017. Turns out he's just a good hitter. Could just be Freitas has turned himself into a really good hitter.
  3. Maybe CC can pencil him in to start in Oakland. Just kidding.
  4. Pina has a 1.158 OPS with 3 HR in July Grandal has a .748 OPS with 1 HR in July Freitas is hitting .373/.446/.542 over a large sample of 259 PA in AAA. His .373 BA is 85 points higher than Shaw's .288 in SA. If they dealt Moose, I think they'd add Perez who's hitting well at AAA back to platoon with Shaw at 3B. What's better a catcher combo of Pina and Freitas or a 3B platoon of Shaw and Perez?
  5. I think they can cover Grandal better than Moose. I still don't trust Shaw's anywhere close to his 17 and 18 form. Meanwhile Pina has really picked it up (8 for his last 23 with 3 HR), and Frietas has been hitting consistently over .350 all year in AAA.
  6. Regarding Nova, recency counts for a guy who in 2017 and 2018 was a solid 4th starter in the NL Central. He's made 5 starts in July. In 3 of those starts he's logged 20 2/3 innings, allowed 11 hits, 1 earned run, and 1 HR. His ERA on June 13th was 6.28. Now it's 5.23. Basically, he's back to the guy who was low 4 ERA guy for the Bucs the last 2 years. Keep in mind in the short term the Brewers need 2 starters, not one. They need to expend prospect capital to get the prime target. The second guy will be a pure rental and one that won't cost anything of significance. That's where Nova fits.
  7. The Brewers have a TOR arm. He'll be back around Labor Day. They need one or two guys that can keep them in it through August and one of those guys needs to be a playoff caliber starter. Wheeler fits that description.
  8. Ivan Nova pitched a gem for the White Sox last night beating the Twins. In his last 2 starts he's allowed one earned run over 15 innings. I predict he'll make his next start in a Brewer uniform.
  9. I knew it wouldn't take very long before Perez was putting up numbers equal to or better than Saladino did in AAA. Put it simply, he's a better player than Saladino, who outside of his two GS has done nothing. Perez is a major league talent. If his name was in the lineup every day, he'd produce in the majors too.
  10. I'm looking forward to watching Hiura for the next 6 years. Guys like him don't come along very often, and he's worth paying money to see. I certainly wouldn't trade him for an arm who pitches every 5th day.
  11. Exactly. I look at the Brewers system and they are lacking in positional prospects at the AA level. Other than that though, they're fine. Not a lot of top of the line pitching prospects, but plenty of guys who are performing well enough to move up the ladder. Brewers have not one but two really good catching prospects at Carolina either of whom may at some point crack the top 100 and a 20 year old Tristen Lutz who's holding his own in a tough hitting environment.
  12. I think the answer to whether they are buyers or sellers will likely be they are both. They need starting pitching now but also for 2020. Picking up a guy like Duffy or another arm with control for a year or two beyond makes sense. A second pure rental may also make sense. Shaw's trade value is still reasonably high. His raking in AAA will encourage teams that still see him as a run producing middle of the order bat. It may depend on how confident the Brewers are in their ability to bring back Moose. I think they are confident they can on a 2-3 year deal. Losing Woodruff was a big blow, but this isn't a tipping point for the start of another rebuild. Far from it. When you have a lineup that starts with Yelich and Hiura, the last thought is rebuilding.
  13. That would indeed be a very stupid thing. I'd rather see the Brewers win over anything related to people's reactions. It’s baseball. It’s entertainment. The Brewers haven’t been doing much winning lately. Might as well go WWE version if this ship isn’t righted. Win or lose there's nothing more entertaining than watching Hiura hit. You better savor every at bat. He's a special player. No way he's going down. Ever. They are going with a 4 man rotation with off days every week. That means a 5 man bench. Shaw's up in part to enhance his trade value. I'm sure there's plenty of interest despite his poor season.
  14. Much ado about nothing. They've had a 9 man bullpen since Woodruff went down. They can fill Chacin' s spot with Hauser and still have normal 8 man pen. With off days they don't need a 5th starter.
  15. I think DS would like to get a starter who's a solid 2-3 and hope for a month he can replicate something close to Woodruff and a solid 4-5 rental guy on the cheap who'd be an upgrade over what Chacin's given them this year.
  16. If they eat some money Getting $15M each of the next two years. Maybe eat a couple million but I don’t think it’s too far off from his value. Agreed. Plus the more they'd have to eat, the higher his cost would be in talent back. Considering the cost of reliable veteran starters, 2 years and just over $30 million seems reasonable. I think Duffy would benefit from a move to the NL by getting to face the opposing pitcher twice. He's got postseason experience too. Personally, I've always liked Duffy and he would fit in with ex teammates Moose and Cain.
  17. Nova's overall numbers are bad but he's shown some life lately and he's 2-0 vs. the the Cubs. If they deal for 2 starters, he would make a nice cheap option for the second.
  18. Lynn isn't a rental. He's signed for 2 more years. Texas is going to ask a lot.
  19. The Brewers have had their share of guys like that. Unfortunately, Stearns has traded them away for little return or released them. Scooter Gennett wasn't a highly touted prospect. Nor was Khris Davis. We're still waiting on anyone they received back for Davis to make any impact in the major leagues. The latest example is Garrett Cooper who the Brewers basically gave away despite the fact he was the best hitter on a AAA team that included prospects Lewis Brinson and Brett Phillips.
  20. We've seen examples in the major leagues recently where players have turned relatively mediocre careers into stardom rather suddenly, notably JD Martinez, and Justin Turner. Neither of those two were top 15 draft picks. If those two, and others can suddenly find something, it's not hard to conclude that a player with enough perceived talent to be drafted 15th out of high school, would suddenly learn enough about his swing at age 22 for his talent to blossom. The Brewers never hesitated aggressively promoting Grisham even after he struggled. They must have known that eventually he'd produce to his talent level.
  21. Wheeler having gone down with shoulder fatigue a couple weeks ago might work in Brewer favor. I have to believe Brewers will have plenty of scouts in attendance when he returns Friday. He's the most logical target out there.
  22. A nice cheap bullpen option is Chris Martin from the Rangers. What's not to like about his 13.67/1 K/BB ratio?
  23. Given the choice of adding Leake at a reasonable cost or trying to get by with a 4 man rotation sans Woodruff and including the struggling Chacin, I'd opt for adding Leake and going with 5 starters. He's a 2.1 WAR guy so far this year per B-R. He'd be a decent replacement for Chacin in the 2020 rotation too.
  24. That's urban legend. I was at that game in 2008. Gallardo took a bad step covering first. He wasn't contacted. He actually went out and pitched a scoreless inning after that.
  25. So they know Braun isn't available, and instead of adding an extra bench bat with a roster spot open, they add a 9th reliever? Would serve them right to have to use Chacin as an infielder.
