  1. Over the last several weeks, optimism had surfaced on the south side of Chicago for the White Sox. They had started playing better and the guy thought to be their future ace, Michael Kopech was called up. It was announced about an hour ago he needs Tommy John surgery and will miss all of 2019. Tough blow for the Sox. Looks like another season where Sox might act as de facto bullpen talent supplier for the Brewers stretch run.
  2. This isn't the NFL. If the Cubs and Brewers tie for the division there's a one game playoff for the division with the loser still qualifying for wild card in all likelihood. Cubs get home field for that because they will have won the season series. As for trailing in the loss column, all that signifies is Cubs have more games to play. The Cubs would have had to falter anyway for the Brewers to catch up, and if they go into a bit of a tailspin, the more games they have to play, the better.
  3. The roster construction of the Packers baffles me. When have more than 4 receivers tops seen the field on a week to week basis? I know they want to find "the guy" to play opposite Adams but apparently all the mini camps, OTA's, and preseason games haven't winnowed out the field. I suspect on Sunday, we'll see only Allison, Adams, and Cobb (if he's ready) and Graham split out a lot in double tight end sets, and there'll be at least 2 possibly 3 rookie receivers inactive.
  4. Overlooked is how Perez basically stole the go ahead run in last night's game by stealing third off Montgomery and scoring on Kratz' sac fly.
  5. Historical perspective from 1982. Back then you had to mail a check for the number of tickets wanted with a self addressed stamped envelope, one for ALCS and one for World Series. If your envelope was selected, they cashed the check and mailed the tickets to you in the envelope you provided. I managed to get a pair in the top row of the upper deck right behind home plate for game 5 of the World Series. When the Brewers lost the first two of the ALCS against the Angels, I blew off work and drove to Milwaukee without a ticket, walked up as as single to a ticket booth and got a ticket in the football press box in the mezzanine level along first base line. After the Brewers won, they announced they had several hundred tickets available for the next day, so after the game I got in line and bought a pair to that game.
  6. The last time the Packers faced a team with Mack on it, they beat Oakland 30-20 in 2015. Mack had a grand total of 1 tackle and 1 assist in that game. Rodgers was sacked twice in that game, but not by Mack. Hey Mack's a good player but when he was in Oakland, they had one winning season, and lost in the wild card game that year. Last year they were 6-10. He'll likely only play a limited amount of downs this week. He does make the Bears better, but that hardly kills the Packers chances. In fact, he could hurt the Vikings enough that he actually helps the Packers.
  7. Thanks for saving me the work of looking that up. Yeah, comparing CC and Miley is a bit of a reach... It's more than a bit of a reach. Sabathia was the reigning Cy Young winner when he was acquired. Miley was coming off a year so bad, all he could get was a minor league contract right before spring training.
  8. Miley and Chacin have had similar careers. Both had success early on, then had some struggling years and seem to have found something and rebounded. Neither are power guys but all their pitches have movement and they aren't overwhelmed by the moment. A Chacin type contract is warranted and these are the type of pitchers that fit the Brewer payroll structure perfectly.
  9. Hamels should know better. In 2009, the Brewers were out of the race, yet on the next to last weekend of the season, there were crowds of 33,428, 40,141, and 37,197. Big crowds are nothing new in Milwaukee.
  10. Was there anybody that was a bigger surprise than Jon Olczak? Did anyone have him on their breakout list before the season?
  11. Don't look now, but the White Sox have been on fire, going 14-6 in their last 20 games. So that 3 game series the Cubs have in Guaranteed Rate park later this month doesn't look like such a sure thing anymore. Sox are getting really good pitching lately.
  12. Couldn't agree more. Davies is a proven mid rotation starter. The real Zach Davies was on display yesterday. Nelson is still a question mark but going into the season next year, he's got a spot. Burnes, Peralta and Woodruff could allow them to deal Anderson, but with some uncertainty about Nelson, that might not be the right time.
  13. Meanwhile, James Shields shut out the Red Sox for six innings yesterday. Shields would have been my target, not Gio.
  14. Eh, I don't think Miley will be all that expensive. He seems to be lefthanded version of Chacin. Agree that Woodruff has a shot to put himself in the picture with a good month. It's not the time to deal Davies. I think Anderson is the most likely to be dealt, but even then it's less than 50-50 as they need to upgrade the rotation, not deal it away. Peralta is still very young and showed enough to give another shot. Suter's not a factor as it takes 13 months to recover from TJ. Maybe he gets a bullpen spot next Sept. Agree that they'll move on from Guerra or move him to the pen permanently. His stuff is still pretty good.
  15. This year more teams are tanking the AL. Winning 90 games in the AL isn't much of an achievement.
  16. If you can keep Moose, you sell on high on Shaw, not Aguilar. Moose turned downed $16-17 million QO last year from Royals only to end up getting one year for $6 million. I think he takes one year for $15 million this time around. Aguilar is too valuable as the prime RH power bat. Shaw is a 3B playing 2B, on a team that has three other LH bats with power. Thames trade value is too far down right now.
  17. Not sure Thames has much trade value after this season. 1B/corner OF bats who only have power as a tool are a dime a dozen. If the Brewers do keep Moose, then Shaw might be the guy to sell high on, ideally to a team with an established starter with at least 2 years of control that isn't rebuilding. Example Shaw to Toronto for Marcus Stroman? I realize Stroman's having a bad year but he's just 27 and a year removed from a very solid year.
  18. Start Burnes and let the opponents load their lineup with lefty bats, then bring in Gio in the 3rd or 4th innings.
  19. The Cubs are relying on guys like Jesse Chavez and Jorge De la Rosa to get key outs late in games. Eventually they will turn into the pumpkins they are. Cishek's arm is about to fall off too. Brandon Kintzler's done more to help the Brewers in a month with the Cubs than he ever did in a Brewer uniform.
  20. Anderson has a 1.169 WHIP and Gonzalez has a WHIP of 1.531. So the answer is yes and it's not really close.
  21. Losing Harrison is going to hurt down the road. I'd have rather they had given up less and take a chance on James Shields who's actually had some decent recent starts. Watching the Nats feed last night, they showed Gio in the Nats dugout all night. It looked like he wanted to cry. He was looking all over the park as if to be reminiscing about his time there. Maybe he'll turn it around like Hamels did, but I doubt it. Myself, I'd start Burnes, let him go through a lefty lineup one time and then bring in Gio.
  22. The Cubs are on a long stretch with no off days. When they've slumped the last few years, it was always on these types of stretches.
  23. If Hummel is a passable catcher, they would keep him there. You'd think. That he's not playing there might tell you something. With what looks like a plus bat, it just sees foolish NOT to get another good catcher prospect behind Nottingham. Honestly, I think Hummel's bat profiles much better than Nottingham's. Payton Henry is a good catching prospect. If KJ Harrison can develop defensively, he's another to watch.
  24. I'd roll the dice on Zimmermann. Blevins is an obvious target now.
