  1. Time will tell on how well Gomez will hit over the next few years, but i don't buy that he's still just a defense first CF. He's not only hit great all of this year, he posted an .809 OPS after the All-Star break last year. So i do believe the days of Carlos just being a great defender/sub-.700 OPS hitter are over. Instead, it's more a matter of is he around an .800 OPS guy going forward or even better who also is an elite defender in CF, an elite base-stealer, and an elite baserunner overall on a team friendly contract over three plus years. That all said, to me there aren't all that many players in pro sports who i'd truly consider untouchable if i was a GM and Carlos certainly wouldn't fit that criteria, as much as i love watching him play. Thus, as with almost any other Brewers players, whether i'd trade him would ride entirely on the players offered in return. Get a fabulous offer, then sure. Get only a decent offer though, i'll pass.
  2. Did you not even read the thread title or post where i said just for fun and that i wasn't really looking to see Segura shopped? I simply wanted to see if others here viewed Jean as valuable as i did to where i literally couldn't think of many players in all of baseball that i'd trade him for if hypothetically i could trade him straight up for any single player. Not more to it than that.
  3. I don't get the Porcello love either. He gives up a ton of hits and few strikeouts. Come next year he'll make pretty good money in his last arby year and then he'll be a free agent. Granted, we can't expect all that much for Axford, but i'd rather have even just a decent prospect or two than get Porcello, regardless whether Detroit would or wouldn't trade him.
  4. I don't know brewcrewdue, i'd have a hard time passing on Mike Trout for Segura, even though we have Gomez and no shortstop ready in the minors. Either way, thinking about the fact that the Brewers got guy who legitimately is one of the most valuable overall assets in baseball for a three month rental is still pretty amazing. For all of the justified talk about his hitting, his defense IMO deserves almost as much hype. The range he shows sometimes blows me away. He'll regularly get to balls i initially think is a hit for sure and then throw a bullet to get an out.
  5. I'll admit that i don't follow the prospects on other teams really closely, so can someone explain to me the hype behind Martin Perez? I understand that stats aren't everything when it comes to rating prospects, but the minor league stats for Perez have ranged from very mediocre to bad at most of his stops so far. Lots of walks. More than a hit per innings pitched. Nothing special strikeout rates. Career 1.445 WHIP. So what is it about Perez that has had him so highly rated? Does he throw in the high 90's and/or have great offspeed stuff when his command is on?
  6. I by no means post this wanting the Brewers to shop or trade Segura. Watching him this year, i really am blown away at just how good he is in nearly every facet of the game besides not drawing more walks and he's only a 23 year old rookie. He literally has every tool you'd want from a young shortstop. Great range. Great arm. Speed. Power. Hits for average. Sprays hits all over the field. Instincts. A fabulous attitude. In a thread though on the major league forum, someone asked another poster if he'd trade Segura for Shelby Miller. That got me to thinking if you took everything into account from age, upside, service time, and contract status, and i hypothetically could trade Jean one for one for any player in baseball be it a major league player or prospect, which guys would i 1. For sure trade Segura for 2. At least have to give it real thought Thinking about it, the only guy i could come up with that i without question would trade Segura for was Trout. In the i'd have to at the very least think about it tier, i came up with Bryce Harper, Shelby Miller, and Matt Harvey. The injury factor being higher with pitchers though over an extended number of years and preferring 162 games of Segura at shortstop over 30 starts by a pitcher would make me pass on any pitcher. Yasiel Puig looks like he can be a stud and has a team friendly 7 year contract, but he's a corner outfielder and i'm leery a bit about Cuban players being truthful about their real age. Do some here think i'm i overrating Segura and/or missing guys, thus their list would be longer of players they'd trade him straight up for with age, upside, service time, and contract status all factored in?
  7. Keep in mind that Melvin has nothing to do with the draft other than be consulted if a potential draft pick demands well above slot value. The actual choosing of talent is done by the amateur scouting department (Seid et. al.) Melvin gave the job to Seid though. In sports like the NFL and NBA, the GM is the guy who drafts all of the players, mainly because the NBA draft is only two rounds and the NFL draft seven rounds. The MLB draft though is roughly 50 rounds, so it's not really feasible for a baseball GM to go around scouting such a vast amount of players to make the picks himself. Thus, given how important the draft is, especially to small market teams, who exactly the GM hires to run those drafts is arguably one of if not the most important decision a GM in a market like Milwaukee can make. So while it is true that it was first Jack Z and now Seid who have struggled so mightily at drafting pitching, not Melvin, Doug was the guy who promoted Seid after Zduriencik left and if the farm system doesn't soon start showing better promise, IMO Melvin shares in the blame because ultimately he hired Seid to run the draft.
  8. It was a hypothetical which I didnt really think was that hard to figure out. In any case, if the Cards offered a trade like that, would you take it if you were Milwaukee? It would give the Brewers a frontline pitcher with 5 more years of control. As someone put it earlier, would Segura + #5 Starter > Shelby Miller + Replacement Shortstop? I don't know the answer to that. I wouldn't trade a talent like Segura for Miller mainly because the injury factor is just much higher for pitchers and also because i think Segura would have more impact over 162 games than Miller over 30 starts a year. Watching Segura this year, i really am blown away at just how good he is in nearly every facet of the game besides not drawing more walks and he's only a 23 year old rookie. He literally has every tool you'd want from a young shortstop. Great range. Great arm. Speed. Power. Hits for average. Sprays hits all over the field. Instincts. A fabulous attitude. Given his age, skillset, and and salary status, when trying to think of who i'd consider trading Segura for, besides Mike Trout being a for sure yes, there is nobody else i'd easily trade him for. Bryce Harper would definitely be a consideration and among pitchers, Harvey and Miller would be the two guys, but like i said before, the injury risk with pitchers is much higher over an extended length of years.
  9. Peralta started pitching for the Brewers in 2006 when he was 17. It's not like he switched to pitching only say 2-3 years ago. In all of those years pitching, command has been a consistent problem for him. This isn't a new issue to pop up by being in the majors. FWIW, i'm not implying that i want Willy demoted back to the minors. My only point is that guys with command problems like he's had his whole career don't ever find that needed command to become really good more often than guys do learn to consistently command their pitches. MLB has been littered with guys forever who throw hard like Peralta, but never amount to much because of poor command. That's a skill as much as throwing hard is.
  10. Weeks has been hitting well for a while now (.905 OPS, last 18 games), so they haven't been conceding anything surrounding him lately. However, I agree that having such an important hitter for the team struggle so badly, for so deep into the season, has been one of the main weaknesses of the offense. True, but we can't forget than Braun and Ramirez haven't provided near the power which they did last year. That's huge because both were beasts in the critical 3/4 spots in the order last year. If we were getting that same or near the same production from them this year to go with Segura/Gomez being so good, the lineup could have been better able to handle Weeks being garbage and Hart not playing a single game so far.
  11. So then you really don't have a solution other than the status quo? Unlike Thurston, I'm more than fine with trading some vets at the deadline, but i wouldn't trade Gomez unless the offer was silly good. As for the status quo comment by you though, there could be a way hypothetically without a bunch of trades and that simply being this organization actually drafting and developing better pitching for once. It's so very hard for any small market team to put together quality pitching staffs when the farm system goes pretty much decades not being able to draft and develop pitching. It's almost hard to do by going around 15 years and only draft/develop Sheets and Gallardo as quality starters, while other franchises do it so much better. Hell, our drafts rarely can even manage to develop good bullpen arms, much less starters. So far at least, Seid doesn't look much better than Jack Z was at drafting pitching.
  12. Besides the fact that Peralta throws hard, what else is there to say he has a high ceiling? Yea, he's basically a rookie this year, but he hasn't just struggled a bit, he's been terrible. Only 45 K's in 80 innings. A brutal 45/32 K/BB ratio. A brutal 1.663 WHIP. He wasn't exactly dominant in the minors either with a career 1.410 WHIP, including a 1.582 last year in AAA. I see the odds being very low of Peralta ever developing into a really good starter.
  13. The aspect which gives me hope that Carlos has really turned the corner as a hitter is how often he now hits the ball from center to right field instead of being mostly just a pull hitter when he was struggling yearly to post an OPS of .700 or better. Just look at the recent Miami series for example. He hit three triples and all went to right field. That never would have happened two years ago. I'm not expecting him to continuing being a .900 plus OPS hitter over the next three years, but i am convinced that his days of being a sub-.700 OPS hitter are also over.
  14. I don't follow the pre-draft stuff much at all, but with the new CBA and the bonus pools, do you think this will lead to more high school kids drafted after the first few rounds to choose going to college vs signing for lesser amounts than in the past?
  15. They won 96 games in '11, and easily had the talent to win the World Series. I'm genuinely sorry that you couldn't enjoy that. Anticipation is great and all, but the real thing is better. It sounds like you had more satisfaction following the team from '99 to '04 than you did enjoying the realization of the anticipation of those years. Which is a little bizarre, I have to say. No kidding It's one thing to disagree with how a front office builds a roster, but to care so much about that to where a person was unable to enjoy at all watching a team win 96 games, win a thrilling 5 game series vs Arizona, and then be two games from a World Series berth is also bizarre to me. I know someone like that in regards to the Packers. He hated Ted Thompson before the year Green Bay won it all. He'd complain that Ted was cheap and wouldn't go after more free agents like Ron Wolf did. He regularly whined that McCarthy was clueless and TT was an idiot for hiring a head coach with weak credentials. Well, he'd spend so much time complaining about how he thought the team was wrongly run that until the actual Super Bowl, he didn't enjoy the ride much at all and IMO at least, that ride getting there was as much or more fun than winning the Super Bowl was. Maybe some people simply take sports way more seriously than i do and thus they just can't enjoy even success unless that success is done in a fashion like how they wanted it to be done. FWIW, i've also had some issues with how both Melvin and Attanasio have gone about doing things from year to year, but no way in hell was that going to prevent me from greatly enjoying the two playoffs runs, especially the 96 win season and NLCS ride. That was by far the most fun i had watching a Brewers team since i was a kid in 1982. In fact, i'm a huge Packers fan, more than a Brewers fan, yet i was more nervous and then thrilled during that Game 5 vs Arizona than i was the Packers Super Bowl victory.
  16. My gut feeling is that Braun was a PED user to some degree. That said, i also feel Braun and every other player involved in this Biogenesis situation deserves a really fair process where their guilt can be proven to a near certainty before both having their reputations damaged permanently and being suspended. There is a ton on the line for all of these players involved in this situation, not just Braun. So i sure hope that if MLB does go out and do a mass suspension binge of 20 plus players, they have more socalled evidence than the word of a guy trying to help himself and the scribbling of names on a piece of paper. I also hope that if there is a mass suspension on potential shaky evidence, it's all made public for everyone else to evaluate whether MLB did really have a strong case or if was mainly just based on getting a guy to tell them what they wanted to hear via threats of expensive litigation.
  17. Yea, i feared that he wasn't as good as he pitched last year, but i didn't expect him to be this atrocious either. Command pitchers who lose command get shelled in the big leagues.
  18. I wouldn't be surprised if you said the same thing around this time last year. As we all know, Weeks rebounded nicely from a terrible start and ended up hitting .260/.344/.445/.789 from June 1 on. While I don't expect him to repeat that kind of performance again this year, I certainly am expecting a significant rebound. Everyone should. Weeks has a rest of season ZiPS projection of .238/.332/.410, which sounds pretty reasonable if you ask me. So far, Gennett has proven that if he bats .300 he can match that line.... in the minors. Gennett is young and I won't pretend to know what he will develop into. That said, anyone who's convinced themselves that Gennett represents a clear offensive upgrade over Weeks for this season is fooling themselves. It's possible but not likely. Did ZiPS predict Weeks would have an amazingly bad .550 OPS after two months? I'm not expecting anything great from Scooter, but how much i'd keep playing Weeks would have nothing to do with what his ZiPS projection is for the rest of the season. I try not to ever use hyperbole when it comes to struggling athletes, but i can't recall seeing a hitter in awhile looking as lost at the plate as Weeks has these two months outside of his ability to still draw walks. He reminds me of one of those players who lose confidence and can't make simple throws to first base or a basketball player who gets the yips and suddenly can't make free throws anymore. I feel bad for him because Rickie clearly cares, his a good teammate, and has a lot of pride. This has to be eating him up, regardless of him saying it doesn't.
  19. It's seems kinda bizarre to me that the lineup has a leadoff hitter with a .372 OBP, the next four hitters all have a .300 plus batting average, and a .900 plus OPS, yet consistently scoring runs is such a struggle. I get why the pitching is bad, the talent in the rotation is poor. The offensive struggles though are a little harder to explain given the numbers of the top five hitters in the order, even though i get that Lucroy has struggled a lot, Weeks has hit more like a pitcher with an almost unfathomable .555 OPS, and Yuni reverted back to being Yuni.
  20. Yea, he at least has a power arm. Given this season looks shot already, maybe the team could get lucky and Figaro surprises as a starter through the rest of the season. The only power arm in the rotation right now is Peralta and he's got so many command issues that he's be dreadful.
  21. No kidding. The starting rotation is so bad, the bullpen is throwing more innings than the starters are lately. It's to the point that getting just five innings out of a starter would be considered going deep into the game.
  22. The Cardinals realized one player does not make the team and knew when to cut bait. One of the best things to ever happen to the Cardinals franchise was Albert turning down their 180 million dollar offer. Not only did that save St. Louis from being stuck with that albatross contract, it allowed them to sign Beltran who has been better than Pujols on a vastly cheaper three year deal.
  23. Their bullpen was incredible during that 2011 run. We may never see a World Series winning team get carried by a bullpen in the playoffs like the Cardinals got that year. In fact, we may never see a team win a title in the manner St. Louis won that year. First they needed an absolute monumental collapse by Atlanta to just make the playoffs. Then vs the Brewers, nobody in their rotation went more than five innings, yet their bullpen became unhittable. Finally, in the World Series vs Texas, they were one strike away from losing in back to back innings, only to get saved by Freese and Nelson Cuz misplaying a fly ball.
  24. I see Roenicke lower on the problem list behind pitching, but one thing that i can't do anymore is watch his press conferences after games. His putting a y at the end of nearly every players last name is annoying as hell. It used to make me laugh, kinda like listening to Davey Nelson still fumbling around trying to formulate a sentence without stammering, but now the Roenicke y-fest bugs me a lot. Maybe it's the losing though which has made me change the channel as soon as i hear him say Brauny, Rammy, Gomey, Axy, Siggy, etc.
