  1. Kodi is the one guy i worry a bit that some years down the road, we could regret trading away. Yea, he has some command issues, but he's still a young lefty with a great arm who can throw in the mid-90's. If at some point things click for him by himself or via different instruction, he could become more valuable than anyone else we traded. As for Schoop, i just wonder why real prospects were needed to acquire him, but Dozier was traded for nothing given it was pretty much a coin flip over which of the two would be more productive over a 50 game sample the rest of this season? Sure Schoop had another year of control, but it would be at 10 plus million, so no lock to be exercised for a player with his warts, especially that he rarely ever walks.
  2. When you try to pull everything in sight, these types of things happen. He's not trying to pull the ball into shifts anymore than the numerous other hitters who pull the ball a lot, they just can't help it with their swings.
  3. Prior to the great start last night, Miley walked 13 batters in only 22 innings. If he keeps doing more of that instead of limiting walks like last night, it's only a matter of when those free passes start crossing the plate. Walks have been Miley's biggest problem through out his career and it will likely determine whether he can be productive with the Brewers going forward.
  4. Wade was great tonight, but prior to this game, he had walked 13 batters in only 22 innings. Walks were why Baltimore waived him. Hopefully he can limit his walks going forward because more than anything else, that will determine his success or failure. He has stuff to get hitters out, but can't hand out to many free passes and succeed. Eventually those baserunners start crossing the plate.
  5. If Archer does well for the Pirates, they'll have a pretty good rotation and their offense picked up once a few guys got out of slumps.
  6. Yep. Ortiz has a nice ceiling, but he's basically been treading water for 2 years since since we acquired him. There's a lot of room for doubt there. Villar....eh. I liked him more than most, but he was probably on his way to being non tendered anyway this fall anyway. Its just an early roster dump. Hopefully he can find some success in Baltimore. Carmona could be something, but statistically he's probably more likely to wind up being another Lara. In any event, we are years from knowing. Medeiros was the hardest one for me to see go, but Soria was a nice addition. I agree on Medeiros He still has things to clean up to become a productive major league pitcher, but young lefties with an arm like his are hard to part with. Ortiz was ranked higher by nearly all services who do that with minor league players, but i'd rather Medeiros stayed with the Brewers organization than Ortiz.
  7. Braves have Gausman for 2 1/2 years to see if they can turn him and his stuff around.
  8. According to Haudricourt, Schoop won't be playing shortstop, Arcia will. So likely based on whether a lefty or righty is the starting pitcher, Shaw or Schoop will start the game on the bench.
  9. Runs not scored early in the game still count as zero runs. Obviously it's a trade off - better offense for worse defense. You hope the better offense offsets the worse defense by a significant amount. The Brewers upper tier defense for much of this year is one reason why our no name starting staff has been as productive as it's been. I'm a big fan of the job Stearns has done so far in his tenure and obviously he and his staff have thought about all of this stuff before making these moves, i just am leery of potentially sacrificing defense so much to get more offense given the starting pitching is still a big question mark to me.
  10. We all have seen the many really good plays Arcia makes at shortstop, plays Schoop wouldn't be as skilled at if playing shortstop. To think having Shaw at secondbase and Schoop at shortstop wouldn't be a terrible infield defensive situation is just being unrealistic, even though the offense would be better. Yes but it's possible Schoop starts at SS then late inning he moves to 2B or out of the game and Arcia plays SS. Runs allowed early in the game because of bad defense count the same as runs allowed later in the game.
  11. If that third piece isn't big, i think this is a good trade for the Pirates. Glasnow looks like a bust and Meadows hasn't lived up to his earlier prospect status.
  12. Not even that If Shaw were to play secondbase vs righthanders, Villar could play vs lefties. Granted, who knows about the health of Villar and if he'd continue hitting lefties well. I'd like this trade better if we hadn't first traded for Moustakas and simply let Shaw be the thirdbaseman and Schoop play secondbase. Now one of those three have to sit each day unless Arcia doesn't play and Schoop is a shortstop, with Shaw at second and Moustakas at third. Ugly infield defense if that's the case. Brewers are 28th in GB rate. Infielders don't get many chances.

  14. Before we traded for Wheeler, i'd rather Stearns/Counsell simply tried Burnes in the rotation. Nope, they want their strong bullpen and I agree with them. Get a solid starter to hold down the fort. Jennings/Williams/Albers/Jeffress/Hader/Soria/Knebel That's seven deep Burnes has thrown a grand total of seven innings this month and that was before adding Soria and Albers coming back. Put Burnes in the rotation and call up Woodruff to be the 2-3 inning guy when needed because we have plenty of depth in the bullpen without him given Soria and Albers are now in the mix. Why sell off more prospects to get a starter who very well wouldn't be better than Burnes, only to have him sitting in the bullpen five out of every seven games?

  16. Still supports his argument that you're making over the top statements that aren't backed up by actual facts. Career vs. LHP Villar: .325/.434/.759 Murphy: .317/.404/.722 2018 vs. LHP Villar: .352/.540/.892 Murphy: .296/.292/.588 These career numbers are misleading In 2016 Murphy vs. LHP .376/.548/.924 In 2017 Murphy vs. LHP .343/.480/.823 I don't know if he changed something in his stance or approach when he got to Washington, but he had back to back huge years, .985 OPS in 2016 and .928 OPS in 2017. He was injured to start this season and started out horrible in June, but so far in July he has posted a .936 OPS. He's a really good hitter and better than Villar. That said, with Shaw having to play secondbase after trading for Moustakas, getting Murphy would leave one of those three on the bench each game.
  17. Finally? Hasn't he done this several times in the past few years? Boras gets the biggest deals done...but he's also hurt some clients when he's trying to reset the market and the teams just aren't biting. And I don't see a guy who coming off a very good year who gets 6.5 million "easily" getting 80 million when you have Machado, Donaldson and Beltre available at the same position he plays. Yea, no way Moustakas is getting some 80-100 plus million dollar contract this offseason.
  18. There's a natural aversion to losing guys/changing things for fans who follow teams too closely. Case in point, I don't recall ever seeing a single person on here praise Kodi Medeiros as a prospect, and suddenly lots of people were aghast at losing him for Soria. Come on The vast majority of the criticism isn't over trading away Phillips/Lopez. Both were expendable. What most don't like about the move is trading for a thirdbaseman instead of a middle infielder, forcing Shaw to play secondbase. Had we traded those two guys for say Asdrúbal Cabrera or Dozier instead of Moustakas, the criticism wouldn't be the same.
  19. If it was no big deal defensively to put big lumbering corner infielders with power at secondbase instead of lesser hitting, but more athletic and skilled fielders, this would be common. His lack of range will not only show up often, he hasn't turned a double play in his life. The footwork involved in that quick pivot, the various types of tosses from a secondbaseman to the shortstop depending on where a ball is fielded, the jumping over sliding baserunners while throwing, throwing from various arm angles, etc etc. All of those things are skills honed by middle infielders via years and years playing the position. You don't pick that up taking some practice pre-game once in awhile the last few weeks with no baserunner baring down. Look how many times key double plays only get the guy out at first by a step, half a step, or less with skilled middle infielders who have been turning double plays since they were kids.
  20. I don't like it either There have been enough middle infielders available who can play secondbase. Trade for one of them vs putting a plodding Travis Shaw there where he's maybe never turned a double play in his life.
  21. He would have been a nice pick up for the Brewers.
  22. And Boras and Holland were foolish enough to turn down that contract, costing Holland over 30 million dollars.
  23. Ugh that's the worry. His numbers are so pedestrian! We'll see, but this was in the article
  24. Helps the Cubs to be rich. They take on 10 million dollars, so they likely give up scraps in return prospect wise.
