  1. That's the thing some may be glossing over. Just because prospect ranking sites have these players rated where they are doesn't mean the Royals have to feel the same. For example, Brett Phillips was the highest rated player in the Gomez trade and he very well could end up being the least useful. Michael Brantley was the last player added to the Sabbathia trade for Cleveland and they chose him over Taylor Green who was rated as roughly an equal prospect. This stuff is far from an exact science.
  2. I think teams for the most part have been given up less for rentals, especially since teams no longer get the first round pick once the player leaves in the offseason. In the past when teams could count on getting that pick back, it made trading a lot for a rental easier to stomach.
  3. I agree deGrom is just as good of a pitcher, on the surface at least, seems a better health risk, and likely would cost a bit less than Syndergaard. That said, i don't like the idea of shelling out the massive prospect cost it would take to get either, especially given every pitcher by nature of the position is a health risk.
  4. Logan is a lot like many MLB relievers, erratic from year to year
  5. He had a very good year in his AA season, that's an entire year. He's had stretches in 2016 and 2017 where he hit very well. It's not like he has always been awful, and that's why some of us are holding out hope he can find that again. And you're wrong about making zero adjustments. He is focusing on trying to go the opposite field, that's one adjustment. He has eliminated some of his pre-pitch movements in the box, that's another adjustment. Obviously needs to make other adjustments.. I do wonder if the Brewers coaching staff tried to hard to force adjustments in his batting stance and other things, with the end result in Arcia being the mess that he currently is? While he certainly had some struggles last year, he wasn't horrible. .277 BA .324 OBP .407 SLG .731 OPS 15 HR 34 XBH We'd be thrilled right now had he repeated something around those numbers given the rest of the roster this year. Arcia will likely always struggle with plate discipline, but with his defensive abilities, if he can hit like last year, i think he's an asset regardless if he wouldn't be as good overall as we wished for. Tinkering with how a young hitter hits can sometimes really help, just look at Segura since leaving the Brewers. The reverse can also happen where a young guy becomes a mess and is totally lost at the plate.
  6. Such a bummer at SS this year First Arcia turns into a pitcher at the plate. Next Dubon tears his ACL in a run down when he may have been very close to getting called up. Then Saladino shows some promise that he could be a competent fill in for Arcia and he days later badly twists his ankle on a fluke play. So here we sit with either playing Arcia and his horrendous bat, trying Miller at SS where he'll be a defensive liability, or giving more starts to Sogard vs righthanded pitchers. All bad options.
  7. Yea, Saladino gets a shot at taking over the everyday SS spot on a contender and he badly twists his ankle on a fluke play.
  8. Davis is odd in how crazy consistent he is from year to year Batting average the last five years .244 .247 .247 .247 .242 I can't recall seeing something like that His SLG the last four years .505 .524 .528 .530 He's literally the exact same hitter every year, only his walk rate goes up and down some.
  9. People weren't asking why Santana isn't on pace to hit 30 home runs again this year. He does have more power and skill though than to be on pace for only 9 homers. The struggles of both Santana and Braun are part of the reason why the offense in general has struggled. Yelich and Cain get on base a lot, but get stranded to often.
  10. Every year can't be an outlier, pretty much the opposite of the definition. Santana has always had power until this season. Who knows, he's trying to focus on higher OBP and lower slugging. Or, it could be temporary and he will hit a bunch of bombs in the 2nd half of the year. The answer is more likely that it's just the randomness which happens in sports all of the time, especially in baseball. You have the upper tier players who are consistently good and then there is a lot of players who are more up and down from year to year, whether it's a pitcher or hitter. Or they will have say two good years in a row and then be quite a bit worse the next year, with no clear reason why except baseball is a hard sport to be consistently good at. Look at Jimmy Nelson and Chase Anderson. If hypothetically Nelson hadn't got hurt last year, would it have shocked anyone if he wasn't as good this year? Will Chase ever be as good as he was last year?
  11. I don't care if Markakis manages to reach 3000 hits, he doesn't belong in the HOF unless he can repeat multiple more seasons like he's having this year. In a seven year stretch from ages 27 through 33, he posted a sub-.800 OPS in six of those seven years and he doesn't do anything else special on defense or the bases to add to his hitting. I'm in the camp of in general preferring guys who make the HOF that were special for at least some stretch of time or consistently really good over players who were mainly just pretty good over a long enough stretch of time to hit or get near certain statistical milestones.
  12. Domingo Santana also struggled early, but has an .850 OPS over the last month, yet is sitting in back to back games. If Braun were to get in a groove and stay healthy for awhile, and Aguilar continues to hit, a good player has to sit and that doesn't account for when Thames gets back.
  13. Scooter Gennett with a .935 OPS. Guess last year wasn't a fluke. I totally understand why he was let go by Stearns and reports were that Scooter garnered no trade interest, but man, imagine his bat in our lineup right now.
  14. But Saladinois is also a very skilled defensive shortstop. It's not as if we'd be going from say Arcia level defense at shortstop to Sogard and his much more limited range. Saladino is known more for his defense than his ability to hit well.
  15. I don't see any downside to that. Saladino is playing great, while Arcia has been among the least valuable players in baseball this year. If the Brewers are going to make a serious run this year, I don't think Saladino is the answer, but Arcia doesn't deserve to play ahead of him right now. And a trip to the minors could spark a change for the better. If the team did at least give Saladino a number of more starts to see if he can keep hitting, it's not as if they'd lose much if anything defensively given he's a very skilled shortstop.
  16. He's mainly just been really bad vs lefties, a sub-.600 OPS. Over his career Yelich is only a .700 OPS guy vs lefties, but not terrible as he's been so far.
  17. If only it was as easy as telling a player not to swing at balls. Corey Hart would have been a multiple All-Star and Weeks may be in the HOF. It's like telling a pitcher he's at his best when he doesn't give up any walks or hits. As for Arcia, they addressed one problem, getting rid of most of the pre-pitch movement. It's also obvious they're drilling opposite field into him. He just hits way too many ground balls, and I'm sure they've been working on that too. Hitting consistently at the MLB level is tough, we all know that, but we have to remind ourselves it's VERY difficult. You see the start guys like Goldschmidt have, as one quick example. And he's an All-Star. Arcia does have a quick bat, so there's reason for hope. And, obviously, still very young. All you can do is keep working with him the cage and hope for the best. Maybe he gets hot later in the year, and in the playoffs. Rickie Weeks actually walked a lot and Hart had somewhat decent plate discipline. One reason Arcia hits so many ground balls is the pitches he swings at out of the strike zone. Perez is the same way. I think he has talent as a hitter and combined with his skill on the infield, he could be an everyday starter, but he just flat out refuses to make pitchers throw him more strikes. I just don't get why he won't change this glaring weakness when it impacts his career and earning power so much?
  18. The utter lack of any plate discipline by Arcia is maddening and he'll never have the level of a successful career he wants until this changes. It's baffling to me because Arcia has to have been told about this issue numerous times and he has to watch video of himself constantly swinging at crap off the plate, leading to one out after another, yet he keeps doing it. Why, given how much money is on the line over his career?
  19. Yea, and something always seems sore on him, whether it's is back, calf, wrist, neck, oblique, and i'm likely to have missed other body parts. For whatever reason some professional athletes age better than others health wise and Braun is now both mediocre and unreliable to consistently play. Gonna be lighting 36 million on fire for the last two years of his deal.
  20. I didn't see anyone saying they want a catcher with a terrible arm like Vogt has, more just that they feel overall, he is simply a better than Bandy.
  21. That's the rub, Vogt has to hit to offset his awful arm. Given though Bandy hits like a guy in a permanent slump and isn't exactly great at throwing out runners either, Vogt likely will be a better option overall. Vogt is also helped by the way baseball is played today compared to the past where for many teams, stealing bases was a higher priority than now. There aren't as many players in the league based mainly on their speed and a lot of teams simply don't want to risk running into an out, even vs a catcher with a bad arm.
  22. I don't recall if this was the case or not, but did Jeffress have his split/change when he was in Texas? Besides that, sometimes struggles lead to more struggles and success can lead to more success. As he struggled in Texas, it very well could have gotten in his head, just like a hitter can go into a funk as a slump leads to a prolonged slump. More so than in football and basketball, baseball strikes me as a sport where the mental aspect of the game can get to players because it's such an individual sport. Obviously talent is hugely important, but when a hitter is in the box or a pitcher on the mound, it's easy to see how if a player is struggling, it can get in their head and thus just a slight loss in their mechanics and/or confidence can lead to missing by inches on their pitches, and those tiny fractions are the difference between a pitch being easy to hit or tough to square up on.
  23. For much off the offseason, fans were focused on getting pitching. Here the Brewers sit though with the 2nd best ERA in the NL and 3rd best in all of baseball. With just decent hitting, the team would likely have one of the better records in the NL. Bottom of the order killing the offense, along with Santana for some reason losing all of his power.
  24. This is where the team badly needs Santana to start hitting like he did last year. The bottom of the order has been crap at SS, 2nd base, and catcher, so Santana has to help keep that first five spots really productive.
  25. I'm trying to figure out if there's even room for Logan. Guerra is stunning people again. Woodruff Peralta Burnes are all making a case for the rotation and Ortiz isn't far off. Suter has proven to be a good long man and Williams is oozing with potential. 1-2 pen spots... williams suter logan 1 rotation spot... peralta burnes woodruff nelson. Pitching is loaded. I'm in my 40's so i've been watching the Brewers a long time and i can't recall the last time the team had so many worthy pitchers for the big league roster that there really isn't enough room for them. Man what a refreshing issue to have.
