  1. Woo! Nice goal by the Badgers. Wow, the Wolverines had a breakaway but blew it. Phew. I don't watch a lot of hockey but it's seemed like the Wolverines are the better team. Hopefully the Badgers can hang on for this last 40 seconds.
  2. I read an article a little while ago where the author says that because there is currently a bit of run on gold, he decided to put a little extra cash into "Fidelity's gold fund, which invests in gold mining companies, gold bullion, gold coins and companies that manufacture things like watches or jewelry that consume a lot of the metal." He said it gained 22% over a month and a half, although he didn't actually buy gold coins or whatever. Plus, that was a couple months ago, so I'm not sure if that trend is holding (I kind of doubt it). Still, investing in a fund which owns gold-related companies seemed like an interesting twist on investing in gold. Then you don't have to worry about keeping a stash of Kurgerrands under the bed.
  3. Is that true? I thought David Cone threw a perfect game during interleague play, then there was that Astros no-hitter against the Yankees when Houston used 6 pitchers. That's at least 3 interleague no-hitters, iirc.
  4. Actually, I did find a bit of advice from a place in Sheboygan that claims to be "home of the Grand Champion Bratwurst", though I can't vouch for it as I haven't tried it. It sounds like it might be right though: They say not to soak brats in beer beforehand (or to parboil them), just to put them in cold water for a few minutes. They have step-by-step instructions on the page I linked to. edit: on the other hand, Usinger's, manufacturers of the best sausage in the country (in my opinion), does recommend parboiling, either in water or beer and onion. They might say that mostly as a liability thing though because they also say it is acceptable to cook them without parboiling, just that you have to make especially sure they are cooked through if you cook them that way (cooking all the way through is always great advice for sausage, and is also why I hate making them. You can't tell for sure if they are done unless you cut one in half and then you've ruined that sausage).
  5. Danzig's recipe also works great as a spaghetti sauce if you use a bit more tomato or a jar of pre-made sauce, especially if you throw in a couple onions and maybe some mushrooms and basil too. Crock pots tend to be looked at as kind of a novelty appliance but they work great for making extremely tender meat. If you cook sausages in one for a long enough time, the casing will basically melt away. As for Gobias's original question, sorry that I can't help. I'm not sure how to keep brats tasting fresh for a long time. I know a guy who owns/owned a catering business but he's on the run from his creditors so I haven't been able to contact him for a few months. He would have been a perfect person to ask though.
  6. He ruined a lot of my days, that's for sure. As far as I can tell, Mench only played for Hanshin for a few weeks last year. He appears to have been diagnosed with some sort of problem in April and DL'd and then sent to the Japanese minors (ni-gun, or "second troop". Kind of seems to be the equivalent of extended spring training or rookie league) for the rest of the year.
  7. I can't believe anybody could think Maggie Gyllenhaal was a good actor. That said, I haven't seen Crazy Heart yet but she's been awful in everything I've ever seen her in. It's hard to believe she was just sandbagging everybody all these years.
  8. The difference is that it is implied that no one is going to sign Prince for $50 million a year or something like that. There is a far greater relative spread in house asking prices than there is among star baseball free agents. The Teixiera contract is the likely baseline for Prince (he could end up a little over that or he could end up a little under that). Many people feel like that might be a worthwhile contract to sign Prince to. If Prince is worth $20-$25 million per year to another team, it's hard to see how he's not also worth that to the Brewers. Either a guy is worth the money or not and I would bet on Prince earning his salary over the next 8-10 years. Obviously Prince would take up less of some teams projected budgets but if the Brewers are going to be involved in free agency, they might as well pay the money for a guy who will actually probably be worth it, rather than Suppan types. Also, the reason it would be the best thing to happen to the Brewers in years is because he is probably the best non-Yount or Molitor Brewer ever and we all remember what happened when Molitor left. The team's attendance dropped to last in the league and didn't rebound to previous levels until the team switched leagues and happened to move into the division that had two guys chasing Roger Maris throughout the summer.
  9. This makes his future look pretty good. Over 500 home runs and almost 2,000 RBIs? I'll take it, and I hope he'll be in a Milwaukee uniform for all of them.
  10. It would be cool if a star athlete came out of the closet but I have to agree that in this case this is just some punk trying to insult someone based on the outmoded notion that being a homosexual is something to be ashamed of.
  11. I remember seeing a commercial for this on OLN years ago, even before the last one happened. I would have totally forgotten about it if not for this thread. I can't claim I care a whole lot about it but I'll probably watch a little anyway. Also, the cup is named after the first winning boat, not the country (although the boat was surely named after the country).
  12. This is a nice signing for STL. Hill is injury-prone and inconsistent but he has pitched well in the past. For the price of a minor-league deal, I think this is a smart move. However, he did have labrum surgery in August so I'm not sure what kind of timeline they're hoping for.
  13. I'm somewhat surprised Thome signed for so little. He was still one of the best DH's last season. Seems like a nice signing for the Twins, even if he's only used sparingly.
  14. I disagree with this. The Hurricanes don't sell out their games (and usually don't even come close) even when they are good. USF is growing but Florida and FSU are the only attendance powerhouses in that state.
  15. If the Brewers leave town before their lease is up, Bud Selig would probably be lynched. The stadium is unipurpose and useless except for baseball and it will have cost taxpayers somewhere between half a billion and a billion dollars by the time it is paid off. If it just sits there without a team before it is even paid off, people will be enraged. I expect the team to leave after 2030 but not before then.
  16. I guess this isn't too bad of a move. It's not exciting (and Davis is excruciating to watch) but he's a nice upgrade on Suppan and the price is not high. Of course, if he's not replacing Suppan, it's not as good of a move.
  17. I disagree. Obviously any pitcher can get hurt but he's only spent 2 stints (43 days) on the DL in his career and neither was for a serious injury (forearm strain, sprained ankle). I'm not sure a forearm strain from April 2007 would concern any team if they had a chance to sign a guy as good as Felix. If I was a GM, I would always be nervous about signing a pitcher to a long-term deal, but you pretty much have to at some point and Felix is one of the 10 best pitchers in baseball.
  18. A lot of people seem to be avoiding arbitration. I'll guess a little more than .75 million because I doubt the team would have filed at .5 or anything quite that low. Closer to 1, though I hope you're right.
  19. Buying out 3 years of free agency is pretty good for the Mariners. Obviously there is risk with signing any pitcher to a long-term deal but a team has to take a chance now and then and Felix appears to be one of the better pitchers in baseball.
  20. I agree. Things never change. I fully expect the new Hootie & the Blowfish record to take the Billboard charts by storm.
  21. My favorite used to be inside hoops. I stopped checking there very often though because now I mostly just check the forums/blogs of the teams I follow. ESPN's truehoop blog can also be a good rumor source but it is updated inconsistently (and sometimes not at all on weekends). They do a nice daily roundup of interesting blogs though. I find PFT very annoying and judgmental (also, a large constituency of PFT commenters seem to be unreconstructed racists) but it is nice that there is a place that collates all the rumors because the NFL blogosphere is much worse than that of the NBA or MLB. It's a real slog trying to find an interesting blog or forum for most teams. Also, most fans are totally ignorant of any teams that they don't follow, which leads to much more parochialism than is seen on most basketball or baseball sites.
  22. Apparently we're a nation too lazy to bother picking up the remote control. I sympathize, they can be heavy. (I wonder exactly how Nielsen ratings are calculated. If somebody is watching whatever is on NBC at 8 and then turns off their TV but leaves their cable box on, does Nielsen record them as watching NBC all night? Or only if the TV itself is actually on? The reason I ask is that I can't imagine 5 million people actually watch Jay Leno, that seems too high by several orders of magnitude. Then again, I don't really get why people enjoy the talk show format, so perhaps I'm being judging Jay too harshly because of that.)
  23. Wasn't there talk that Podsednik wanted at least $15 million over 2 years to sign? Taking $1.75 million from a joke of a franchise is quite a comedown from that. I'm kind of surprised he didn't wait a bit longer to at least see if a competently run team would be interested at that price. Then again, he's probably happy to not have to accept a minor league deal (which he's had to do 3 times over the past 2 seasons).
  24. This is inaccurate. Morrow's career BB/9 is 5.8. That high of a walk rate bodes poorly for his long-term success, especially as a starter. To put that in perspective, Doug Davis has a career walk rate per 9 of 4.1 which equates to 90 walks per 200 innings. If Morrow was able to pitch 200 innings with his current walk rate of 5.8, he would walk 129 batters. Morrow is probably one of the most frustrating players in baseball to watch because of his inability to control where the ball is going. He has the most walks per 9 innings of any active pitcher with at least 120 innings pitched. (If you lower the threshold to 100, our old friend Dennis Sarfate and Radhames Liz have higher rates. Hardly great company.) Morrow has a chance to be good but he also has a chance to be really bad. League is certainly better than Morrow's "floor".
