  1. Greinke actually got pretty stellar run support in Milwaukee. Now, if the angels go up 4-1 next inning and give up the lead in the 9th......
  2. I hate those posts as well. Even though that is literally what I said, it's not what I meant. My point was that I'm sure he told the Rangers he had a deal in place with the Angels. Poor choice of words though I guess, my bad. Like someone else said, he probably wasn't 100% specific or accurate, but I would imagine he said something along the lines of "Segura is the centerpiece, so we need a guy at his level like Perez or Olt to have a deal here".
  3. I think you listen to offers right now, but if you're not blown away you don't make a deal. See how the offseason plays out in regards to the rotation, and if it looks like the team can be competitive then you keep him. If it's going to be Gallardo and a bunch of rookies, then you deal him and continue to set up for 2014. The team likely isn't going to scream "world series contender", but if Marcum comes back for a year and the rotation fills out nicely behind those two (i agree we'd be missing an ace) you could be looking at an 85ish win team. which with the right breaks gets you into the playoffs, and who knows from there. I'm not disagreeing with you, but there's an opportunity to reload in the offseason for 2013 without sacrificing 2014 and beyond. The team just wouldn't be set up quite as well for 2014+.
  4. If Doug didn't tell them that, he should be fired. That's not me saying Melvin should be fired, that's me saying he absolutely told the Rangers about the deal he had with the Angels.
  5. I don't expect Hart or Ramirez to be traded unless Melvin is blown away by an offer, and I don't see that happening. I know a lot of people are hoping (myself included) for a Zach Lee/Ramirez swap....but it's worth noting that the Dodgers balked at trading Allen Webster for Dempster. I don't know if Lee is really a feasible target for Ramirez. And I'm perfectly fine with that approach, they don't NEED to trade either of those guys right now. Wait til the offseason and see how the rotation is shaping up. If it's going to be Gallardo and a bunch of rookies, then you're probably not feeling that great about 2013 and you look to deal those guys to set up 2014. But maybe Marcum comes back on the one year qualifying offer (if healthy), maybe all of our dreams come true and Greinke decides to come back. Maybe Melvin does something else to shore up the rotation. Either way, the bullpen needs to be fixed (and can be done so cheaply, so long as Axford can become a closer again). But they don't need to trade Ramirez or Hart until they see how the 2013 roster is shaping up in the offseason.
  6. sounds like Kottaras is going to the A's.
  7. Without a farm system, you don't get star players without breaking the bank. For a team like the Brewers to compete, they need to make good decisions. Trading for Greinke was a good decision, as it helped them make the playoffs. Trading Grienke away for 3 of the Angels' top 10 prospects is also a good decision, since Zach's final 10 starts in 2012 were meaningless here in Milwaukee. The Brewers weren't going to the postseason with Greinke, despite how well he has pitched. It just wasn't coming together this year. The Brewers are building up a core of players in AA that they feel will give them a chance to win in the future. The last time they had this many quality prospects at that level, they turned into Fielder, Weeks, Hart, etc. -- much of the core of the current roster. I'm sure we'll all miss Zach (and hope that the Brewers try to bring him back next in free agency). This move puts the team in a better position to be competitive in the future than where they would have been if Greinke had pitched out the string and signed somewhere else, giving the team a single draft pick in return. It's about looking to the future. very well written and reasoned response. but it's in response to a guy in the transaction thread who said "I would have asked for Trout or told them to get bent", so i don't know how much reason will help here.
  8. Segura will likely be our starting SS next year, and he will be better than Izturis/Ransom. And cheaper than a guy like Alex Gonzalez. Hellweg and Pena will both likely get invited to spring training, and could be a midseason callup. Both should be on the team in 2014. Zack Greinke is not going to be on the Brewers in 2013 or 2014 unless he is signed in the offseason....so even if it's just Segura next year, the Brewers are better in 2013 than they would have been an hour ago. Not to mention that ideally Segura will be helping the team win games at a very difficult position to fill for the next 5-6 years (and cheaply too). keep demanding mike trout though.
  9. I believe Alcides was in the top 50, maybe even top 25. And Odorizzi is better than either of the pitchers. I'll still take the Greinke for 1.5 years/Angels prospects over what we traded the royals though.
  10. I'm pretty content with that, given last year's results.
  11. 1) Segura was on the BA midseason top 50, so he is a top 50 prospect. 2) They're getting Greinke for like 10 starts... So?? You have an asset...isn't it your responsibility to get maximum value for that asset?? Otherwise why give up the asset?? You never know what could happen. Sickels has him at #78 in his most recent update. Was #66. And who says Zach won't sign an extension with Anaheim?? I would have asked for Trout or told them to get bent. I will take the one pick at the end of the year. Why settle for anything less then what you REALLY should get?? cool story. enjoy your draft pick.
  12. Ariel Pena has a 2.99 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, and close to 9 K/9 in AA this year. I think he would be one to get excited about.
  13. Baseball America had him at #43 in their midseason list....mlb.com had him #44 in the preseason.
  14. Hellweg has been very good since he got moved into a starting role. Ariel Pena has a good upper 90s arm....most expected him to have to move to the bullpen but he's been great in AA this year as a starter. I would hope they got one of those two guys (preferrably both)....the other may be AJ Schugel who isn't that exciting but has put up solid starts all year.
  15. GormanHarvey obviously wins....BUT someone was the first to mention the angels and specifically Segura two months ago back on page 1. Count it!! no need to mention that I also predicted the Brewers would get back into the race. and the fact that I don't know how much I really like Segura.
  16. To make a very quick and probably not that accurate comparison, he's basically their version of Fiers. Don't get me wrong, I really like Fiers....but they're both guys who have been succeeding without great stuff. They may very well continue to do so, but they probably top out as a #3 or #4 starter. Whereas for Greinke you probably want to get a pitcher with ace potential, or a potential all star bat. I would take Quintana back, but I don't think he's a centerpiece to a deal.
  17. Hey Danny, that is a horrible thing to say. I insist you take it back. I do not want Jose Quintana or any of Kenny's other assortment of small-sample statistical flukes. Please go back to talking about the Rangers. What a knob. A bunch of those rookies are relievers as well. well, our bullpen stinks. perfect match!
  18. Hey Danny, that is a horrible thing to say. I insist you take it back. I do not want Jose Quintana or any of Kenny's other assortment of small-sample statistical flukes. Please go back to talking about the Rangers. seriously. all those guys were in the minors when the white sox were a consensus 30 out of 30 in farm system rankings.
  19. And for what it's worth, there's a pretty big difference of opinion when it comes to Perez. John Sickels had him at #85 in his midseason rankings, which was down from just #83 in the preseason. I still think he's more valuable than a draft pick, so I trade Greinke for him if he's the best centerpiece I can get (and I wait that out as long as I can).
  20. 21, loads of potential with three plus pitches. I cannot convince you that he will figure it out, that's really really hard to do with prospects. But he's 21 and at a high level, so he has lots of time to figure it out. That's why he's special/rated so high.
  21. The not K-rod portion of the bullpen made ~$7M this year. I won't count K-rod's money, because it really wasnt part of the plan, and we can just attribute it to players who get raises next year. But assuming a bullpen budget of $7-8M you have Ax and probably three guys making the minimum from the minors (Henderson, Kintzler (?), and maybe a guy like Rogers. I'm just throwing those names out there, so don't jump down my throat). Between those 4 you're probably spending about $3.5M (that's giving Axford $2M in arbitration, no idea if that's right or not). That leaves you about $4M to sign 2 guys to Saito like deals. I think he made $1.75M. Or take away one of the minor league guys and add another free agent ($5M to sign 3 guys). Basically you're replacing Loe, Veras, and Parra (combined $5M+) with new free agents, and then cycling in some minor league guys for Dillard and Estrada (if he's in the rotation. he could fit in here too), and hoping Ax remembers how to be Ax. There's lots of ways to go with it. I know it sounds a lot like throwing a bunch of crap at the wall and hoping it sticks, but that's how a lot of bullpens are built. This year it didn't stick, last year it did.
