  1. I would be interested in him as well, if he could be had for a similar price the Mets paid for Ollie Perez...ie NADA! He pitched very well in the '05 playoff game he came on in relief for Bartolo against the Pale Hose.
  2. I'm sure the same was said after the Brewers traded Joe Thatcher to the Padres, but that criticism has since quieted as well. I'm not advocating the Choate, I'm just saying that ciriticizing a player because of the organizations' actions with the player (outside of bumping a guy from low A to AA and then to the majors...) doesn't hold much credibility in the grand scheme of projection.
  3. The Brushback I thought this was a pretty good take on the Eric Gagne situation. PHOENIX--Brewers pitcher Eric Gagne apologized to his new team over the weekend for the distraction caused by his past steroid use, saying it "shouldn't be taking place." His teammates responded by saying it was not a problem since they weren't really distracted anyway. "Distracted? Why would we be distracted by some alleged PED use by a pitcher who just joined the team five minutes ago?" asked pitcher Ben Sheets. "I never even thought about Gagne until somebody said his name popped up in the Mitchell Report, and even then it barely registered. Believe me, the last thing I'm thinking about this spring is Eric's past use of HGH. I've got my own problems to think about. I can barely stay healthy. Which reminds me: does that stuff really work?"
  4. This could be good in the grander scheme of things. Now we get to showcase another pitcher in hopes of trading him, while limiting Yo's innings. Unfortunately, Yo is my fave player, which kind of sucks all optimism regarding the injury from my psyche.
  5. Maybe I'm in the minority but I like Cueto more than Bailey. If their draft positions were reversed, I would think Cueto would be the balleyhooed prospect, not to take anything from Bailey. I just think Cueto is a mix of Oswalt and Pedro.
  6. I'm with the Twig, as Braun won't have Prince protecting him and we all saw what happened to Hardy last year when he had to fend for himself sans Prince Protection. As for Prince and the illustrious 60HR plateau he will assuredly surpass (if only so he will have more HR's in a season than his father), when he does pass it, how many will be of the "Inside the Park" variety? I'll put the over/under on...THREE!
  7. Imagine being Jr. Gwynny on that plane...
  8. Capellan was only their top pitching prospect at the time because they just traded Dan Meyer, their original top pitching prospect, to the A's for Tim Hudson. And he was always considered to be a relief pitcher because he only had a two-pitch repertoire with minimal control. And when we traded for him, it was said he "touched 100" while I only saw him hit the 96-97 range when he reared. As for CV, a young pitcher who can make hitters look silly with his changeup is a phenom to me. We shall call it a subjective definition.
  9. The example I always like is Nick Adenhart. I thought he would have been the Brew's pick, had he not been injured his senior year. The Angels took a chance on him and offered him a six-figure bonus to sign him away from UNC. Now he is one of the better pitching prospects in the upper minors.
  10. The question with Burnett would be his health. Everyone assumes it will only be a one year rental, but if he gets injured, then he won't opt out and we would be stuck with an albatross of a contract for an injury-riddled pitcher, at a cost of whatever it first cost to procure him and then the cost of not extending one of our young guys.
  11. Joe Blanton is a glorified Doug Davis, except Davis is left-handed and has a slightly higher propensity for the walk. Imagine The Sharpie at Great American... I'm lovin' it.
  12. I'll just be happy when Kendall and the pitcher are on the same page. Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I directly blame Sheets' declining K-rate on the big E. Kendall, conversely, has a great reputation as a pitcher's catcher. And I don't think there is a pitcher in the NL who would rather have a DH behind the plate than a catcher.
  13. Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I actually thought the Gagne acquisition was a lateral move instead of a downgrade. As for the Cubs 1-4, give me the Red Sox 1-4 everyday. And as pointed out earlier, our revamped bullpen should greatly improve upon last year's putrid numbers from the backend of the bullpen, while also allowing Turnbow to not be taxed as much. As mentioned earlier, if they had secured A-Rod as a SS, then I'd say they were just put over the top. IF!!! they trade for Brian Roberts, they will have nominally upgraded the position, while alienating their highest paid player (Soriano, who has stated he prefers batting leadoff countless times). Let's see Brian Roberts perform on a contender sans HGH.
  14. Especially with three young pitching phenoms (CV/Parra/YO!!!) expected to be cornerstones of the rotation for his tenure here.
  15. It would work a lot better if we had Jeff Cirillo to face a hitter to begin the game...
  16. And Joe Pepsi takes home the prize...
  17. Maybe they just recycled last year's preview with a bit of an imbelishment...
  18. It would have been cooler had we signed him...
  19. Isn't it a bit funny that the guy has NO thump and he's played for teams that play in complete bandboxes. I think he's taken Greg Maddux's advice about chicks digging the long ball a bit too seriously. You cannot magnify something that isn't there.

  22. The young gent bats cleanup and DH's on his days off. Wouldn't decently be a bit of an understatement? He should hit well for a catcher, and could become an All-Star at his position if he can figure out the intricacies of his craft.

  24. Well discounting contract, how can it not be the great Yankee Clipper? The gent single-handedly willed his team to the postseason. If not for Derek Jeter, he would probably be in the discussion with Babe Ruth for greatest player to ever play the game. (Jeter moved him off of shortstop, a premium defensive position where he had very good defense, much better than the once Wolverine who never was, to the hot corner). The question I ask, however, is which catcher would people rather have, Russell the Muscle or Joe Mauer? One has injury risks, position risks, and a lack of premium position power, while the other has no injury risks (he's Canadian. They have socialized medicine), was moved FROM 3B to C, has the most power at the position (though McCann could challenge), and has the most speed at his position, to boot (what is that aboot?). The only thing holding me back is...well McCann. One year does not make a career....unless it's Ryan Braun. As for the Brewer I would consider my franchise, I have to say YO!!! El Chupacabra!~
  25. Considering the guy would have been NL MVP if he wouldn't have missed a month... AND considering the utter drop-off after him at his respective position, I am going to say Chase Utley. Otherwise, I would probably say Grady Sizemore. Both are young and do many things quite well. The thing about Pujols is that there isn't a big difference between him and the next best player at his position, and we all remember how the Mariners did the year after A-Rod left, and what a burden his price tag is on a team. There seems to be but two teams that can tread water with his price tag (BOS/NYY).
