  1. Wow, I didn't realize how sick Clayton Kershaw was this year. 54/5 K/BB, in 37 IP.
  2. I think a big part of that is Melvin trying to appease some fans by saying the right thing. The lineup's going to have Hall, Fielder, and Weeks, possibly Jenkins and Gross and Hart. They're going to K a lot, no matter what peripheral moves Melvin makes.
  3. Awesome call, Briggs. I would love to have him there.
  4. I was kind of hoping they'd find a way to keep Koonce around. He had a nice year.
  5. I saw a rumor today (don't remember where) that talked of a possible Crede for Figgins trade, and then the White Sox likely trading Podsednik.
  6. I still have serious doubts as to whether Rivera can actually hit. He swings at everything, and it seemed to me that teams realized that after a little while. I'd much rather have Zaun and have Rivera back in AAA.
  7. If this is true, my prayers have been answered. Long live Zauner.
  8. Brett, where do you get the AL info from, or is that humor? I have never heard that. It was a poor attempt at humor. Since Lee would be nothing more than a DH in a couple years, Houston must be thinking they're moving to the AL to offer him a 6 year deal.
  9. It's just incredible foresight by them that sees a move to the AL in a couple years.
  10. Bobby Kielty, to me, is a no-brainer for a platoon partner. I know we had thrown some names around a month or two ago, and I think Jason Lane was another one. Both of them have the ability to also sort of play CF, because Gross would likely need a platoon partner since I think he should be the CF.
  11. The reason that Dillard won't be a no-brainer is that he's projected as a reliever.
  12. Yeah, the Yankees make sense. They did something similar with Dotel.
  13. I could care less about the strikeouts. It's the walks and P/PA. I think he will be a good hitter, but probably need to carry a high AVG in order to get on base enough. To be fair to him, his walk rate did improve in the minors.
  14. Granderson is a terrific lead-off hitter, because he can walk and hit for some power. Eckstein, not so much, but yeah he did lead off for a World Series team - which also featured the best hitter in the league and two other very good to great hitters in Edmonds and Rolen. So, in the case of Granderson, since he does get on base, he is prototypical (his numbers fell off considerably after the break, though). I don't think Hardy (for sure) or Hart (likely) would get on base consistently enough to leadoff. The only options I see for the Brewers right now that would be fine are probably Weeks and Gross.
  15. I think the Giants will offer more money, which more often than not lands a player. Considering Roberts is old and already has a ring, he doesn't need to go to a contender - he needs to go to whatever team will pay him the most money he can get before he retires, which will probably be after this deal. And if there's one thing you can count on Sabean to do, it's to sign old guys to horrible contracts. And I'm fine with that, because I think the Brewers signing him would make no sense on their side of the deal.
  16. Well, Gross is pretty good, and signing a platoon partner for him would be a lot cheaper than overpaying for an aged CF like Roberts. His defense is pretty poor, but his offensive superiority to Gwynn makes up for it by quite a bit, since I don't really think Gwynn is that special out there, either. Obviously, both Roberts and Pierre are bad defenders, too. I'd guess Lofton would be, too, but I haven't looked.
  17. A few of us felt that way last year when he was being traded. I thought he would have made some sense. He's kind of like a LH Beltran without the walks - he's got power, plays good defense, and can steal bases efficiently. Still, I have serious reservations about a guy who had a .314 OBP last season. That's really awful, and the Brewers need as many guys who consistently get on base as they can get.
  18. Sabean is going to swoop in and overpay for Roberts, because that's how he rolls. I'm fine with that, so long as it doesn't lead to Gwynn playing.
  19. Apparently, the Atlantic league is much easier to hit in than the Eastern League. Yikes.
  20. I personally think they need a long-term solution for CF, rather than a stop-gap. I don't think Gwynn will ever be the answer. That's why I would like to see them get someone like Crisp, or possibly trade one of the veterans for a more advanced CF prospect. Crisp has apparently been involved in some talks, I think I remember reading that Colorado was talking to the Sox about him. His name was also mentioned as being dealt to San Diego for Linebrink.
  21. I think the idea behind signing one of these CF's is so that they don't have to play Gwynn. Lofton is virtually the same as Roberts. I'd rather have both than Pierre, but I think I'd rather have Crisp than all three of those, because he was pretty decent in '04 and '05.
  22. The only time I'll ever pull for Ned Colletti.
  23. Because he would help this year and not be much of a risk, and the Brewers could either get comp picks for him (since he is certainly looking for a long-term deal and would decline arby if he had a great year), or even trade him if they were out of it at the deadline (a distinct possibility). I don't think having him come in and dominate like he used to could be termed as "pains", if he were able to do so. If he isn't, no big deal (like Kolb in 2006, only with much higher upside, and probably a little higher price tag).
  24. The Brewers wouldn't lose their first rounder, though, because they're too high in the round. In regards to the "nobody wants to pay anyone more than a pizza guy" thing, the difference here is that Gagne has the ability to be a dominant reliever, and it's only a one year commitment, and likely won't be that high of a dollar amount.
