  1. Any interest? Free-agent RHP Eric Gagne, coming off back and shoulder surgeries, has started to throw and has drawn "a lot of interest," according to agent Scott Boras. Gagne will seek a one-year contract in hopes of re-establishing his eight-figure annual value before he hits the market again next winter. Seems pretty low-risk, high-reward. I'd guess he'll get a few million, plus incentives, but if he were to work out, it'd be worth it, and if he didn't, it's only a one year commitment.
  2. I personally love groundball guys, too, but I think guys like Westbrook would fall apart with that defense behind him (like he has since Vizquel left Cleveland). If there were fewer questions about the offense, finding a phenomenal middle IF to hit 8th wouldn't be a terrible idea (maybe part of the reason they signed Perez?).
  3. I think Westbrook, because of his severe groundball tendencies, would probably be a bad match for the Brewers infield. If the Brewers begin with an IF of Fielder, Weeks, Hall, and Koskie (as I expect them to), they have one plus defender - Koskie. Chances are, teams would be hitting balls through the infield all day long. Poor infield defense (and a high amount of balls allowed into play) is a big reason why his numbers fluctuated so much in Cleveland. Lee kind of has the other problem, which is he gives up too many bombs, and his K rate has dropped two straight years. The Brewers need to try and get high K pitchers, which is a more expensive game.
  4. If it's 2008, I'd guess it'd be in September. I think he's going to be a really good hitter, but the highest he probably starts this year is Brevard (though I think the team should maybe start skipping their top prospects past there, a la High Desert). If he mashed in Braun-fashion there, though, and did the same at Huntsville for the second half, he could see Nashville in 2008, and get called up at some earlier point in the season. He's definitely an advanced hitter (40 BB in 186 AB at Helena), so I don't think he'll be seriously tested until AA.
  5. Drew is one of the most talented players in the game. Whereas Jenkins makes things look tough at times, Drew is pretty much smooth. He's a five-tooler (maybe four now, but he can still run fairly well). Drew has the talent to win an MVP, Jenkins an All-Star.
  6. With that considered, they can pick which team's bid to accept, correct? It'd be the same as say an American guy who went there and came back - he's free to sign with the highest bidder if he so chooses. I believe the posting thing only happens once.
  7. Oh, I guess I missed that. I figured he was saying they could get Ensberg for cheap (which I think they could). I really wouldn't want Lidge.
  8. Hardy's better than Everett, yes. But an Ensberg/Hall 3B/SS combo would be better than a Hall/Hardy one, offensively.
  9. Wild, like off-field stuff, like Lou Palmisano stuff that pogo mentioned. Sometimes it is totally off-base when someone has their "commitment" to baseball questioned, but it seems like this stuff has been said about him for a while. Not wild like "wants to win".
  10. I would rather have him than Pierre, for sure. He had an injury-plagued year in Boston, but he was excellent in Cleveland. They signed him to what I thought at the time was an excellent-priced deal. If he rebounds, he will be worth that money.
  11. They get the cash back. Matsuzaka would become a full-fledged FA next year, though, I believe.
  12. Sheff never had a season where he tanked, though. He destroyed basically every level of the minor leagues before he even turned 20. I think Salty's going to be a good player, but unless you're a Delmon Young or Sheffield, etc. you're not going to get away with being overly flaky, or having off-field problems.
  13. Carlos Lee is superior to Drew in basically every way. Except defense, plate discipline, base-running, speed, OBP, and SLG. He's healthier and six months younger and strikes out less, those are basically where he's superior.
  14. The Sox should have had Papelbon in the rotation at the start of this year, I think, but now with Matsuzaka and Papelbon complementing Schilling, they should be decent in the first three spots in the rotation. Wakefield is coming back, too, and they have Beckett as the highest-paid #5 starter in the league.
  15. Drew is a terrific all-around player. Defensively he's best in a corner, but if the Brewers could get him by letting him play CF, I'd do it. However, he gets hurt almost as much as Nomar.
  16. He is awesome. But hey, Brian Anderson worked out famously.
  17. Unfortunately, though, Sarfate keeps racking up the walks, too.
  18. I think Maddux was a pretty realistic possibility for a 1 year deal with an option in about June, then he went to the Dodgers and pitched above his head for two months. I think that run probably priced him out of the Brewers range a little bit, and combined with the way Villanueva pitched, there's probably not even much interest.
  19. Bonderman never played at either level, as he was bumped up directly from A-ball To me, this is the ultimate head-scratching move. He probably should have just finished his second big league season, instead of his fourth. Now he's a 24 year power arm with close to 800 MLB innings (counting playoffs) on his arm already. I'm not saying he's going to get hurt, because his IP have been judiciously increased and they seem to have taken precautions with him, but that's a lot of work for a guy who turned 24 three days ago.
  20. Mass, do you happen to have Weeks' line from the AFL handy? Six bombs now, 7 walks. He's going to be here fast.
  21. Hey, I love Yuniesky, too. It's just that I wouldn't hit a guy who took 17 walks in almost 600 AB's any higher than 8th. Crosby was putrid. He makes Scutaro look like A-Rod.
  22. A's. Please do it, Billy.
  23. Cool. I personally like spending high amounts on these players much more than during actual free agency. If he can defend like Yuniesky can, I'd be fine with him hitting 8th for a long time (if he hits like Betancourt, that is).
  24. I probably check at least that many times, and during the week I'm only home from like 3-9 PM.
  25. I don't think so. I don't think Reed can hit all that much better than the options the Brewers have.
