  1. Why do they have to firesale Turnbow? What would that extra 2 million they would save this year do for the Brewers? I'm not saying they have to, but it just has that feel to it, as far as I'm concerned.
  2. The problem the Brewers had with rookie pitchers in 06 is that they failed to identify the best one until they went through 3 other guys first Moreso, it was just the lack of solid depth in general - both in the rotation and bullpen. Helling was counted on (probably foolishly) to be the 6th starter, then he got hurt and that was shot. Then, the rookies other than Villanueva were terrible. Getting Lieber makes sense, if only because it gives them another arm capable of being league average. Then Villanueva can get more AAA time (though I am fine with him as the #5 today), and be ready when called upon. This is basically what Oakland, as one example, did. They basically had 7 starters last year on their opening day roster (though Kennedy didn't start any games). When Harden and Loaiza got hurt, they were able to turn to Saarloos and Halsey. Not great pitchers by any means, but the ability to be average is severely undervalued.
  3. I like Lieber quite a bit. It really shows how stupid it was to give that contract to Turnbow last year, too. If his salary was like $500,000, or something, they could just let him see if he can work it out. Instead, they get to firesale him, since they have something like $10 million tied up in the pen. Mench is/was terrible, and I was unenthused (to say the least) when they got him in the Lee trade. So, I'll be glad to see him gone, whether it's to Philly or elsewhere. Basically, I agree with clancy.
  4. Well, it was fun while it lasted.
  5. There is a reason there is a market for Kevin Mench. Trying to find it is like looking for the Holy Grail, or something, though.
  6. Yeah, he's lost his luster. I could care less about his personality, I'm just not sure he's a good baseball player.
  7. Sheets/Schmidt would be hands down the best 1-2 punch in the league, as far as I'm concerned.
  8. They have to be able to do better than Taschner. Man, if the guy wasn't born in WI, I don't think he'd even be seen as a consideration.
  9. Beats the hell out of being mentioned in the Roberts sweepstakes.
  10. The guy had one huge year prior to getting a large check. Just to further illustrate this point, Beltre's full season OPS's: .780 .835 .721 .729 .714 1.017 .716 .793 There were/are "whispers" about that 2004 season, to say the least.
  11. Marcus Sanders MI - Ricky Henderson as a middle infielder. Like if Rickey was playing middle IF in MLB now, at like 50? Because the dude hit .213/.302/.265 in the Cal league last year. He had a nice year in 2005, but when he moved up he was awful.
  12. I wouldn't touch Ramirez. He's just as much of a walks machine as Davis - but he doesn't K people like Davis did. Once upon a time he had a nice 60 inning stretch, but the guy's career K:BB is 1.24.
  13. The Nats definitely have the money to pay him, but that's a huge OF for him to attempt to cover.
  14. Well, he's had one year (or one and a half) when he got hurt. He played through the pain last year - because he's a gutsy, gritty, hard-nosed player who wants to win (or are mediocre white guys the only one's who can get that tag?). The K haters would like him - he has almost 1000 more BB than K's. He'd be worth that $10 million if he played 120 games.
  15. Pogo needs some love in regards to being the heir to the throne. His WV stuff was great.
  16. If the Brewers felt that those players were that good, why would they trade them for him? Really, one of those guys had a terrible year last year (Turnbow), one wasn't better than average (Jenkins) and one is the Brewers best player. I certainly wouldn't trade Hall. The Red Sox are trying to get a haul of prospects, I don't think they'd want Jenkins and Turnbow in a Manny deal. And the Brewers wouldn't want Manny's contract, nor would Manny want the Brewers.
  17. Yeah, he's 34 right now, and they'd be getting him for his age 35, 36, 37, and 38 years.
  18. They're going to want (and get) more than that if he moves. I think there's a 75% chance he's a Red Sox next year. And I think it would be a bad move to pay 38 year old Manny $20 million to stumble around in the OF.
  19. He wouldn't be a $20 million hit when you add up all the contracts we dump. Yes, he would be. The Brewers would have to pick up his option years in 2009 and 2010, which are each $20 million. Jenkins comes off the books after this year. They would be getting Manny at 4 years, $78 million, for his age 35-38 seasons. They couldn't do that, it's a financial impossibility, especially when they're going to want to lock up Hall, Weeks, and possibly Fielder and Capuano during that time period. It would be a total burden.
  20. Personally, I'd like to see them do all they can to avoid moving Hall to the OF. Crawford doesn't really take walks, either. I think he's a down the order hitter, and not a leadoff hitter. The Brewers have Weeks to leadoff for the time being, anyway. Like I said, though, I love Crawford. I'm more lukewarm on Baldelli, but they wouldn't have to give as much to get Baldelli, either.
  21. So they would have an OF with Dunn and Ramirez? Yikes. I don't think that will happen, nor do I think Boston would want Griffey. He's not a good defender anymore, and he didn't hit that well last year, either. The Red Sox would certainly want Dunn. Bowden still hearts Griffey, so it's just a matter of what the Reds would get (but, why would the Reds deal with the Nats again?).
  22. but are his D stats that bad? No, they aren't. Even PMR, which looks at range, has him as a league average LF: One surprise to me is Barry Bonds. With his reconstructed knees, I expected Bonds to be at the bottom of the rankings. But he about as average as you'd like. The model predicted he'd turn 187 balls into outs, and he got to 188. This actually confirms what I saw last season. He moved surprising well in left field. www.baseballmusings.com/a...018498.php
  23. Who's a tools goof OF that's on the market? Off the top of my head, Crawford and Baldelli (allegedly), maybe Wily Mo Pena or Corey Patterson.
  24. I think the Brewers should do this for the team and for the fans as we havent seen a big star trade in.................. forever. Yeah, but it essentially can't happen. This situation is basically like trying to sign Ramirez in FA. For one, the Brewers wouldn't be the only suitors (they won't be a suitor at all), and Ramirez would have to a.) want to leave Boston, and b.) want to come to Milwaukee - as opposed to LA, or wherever. Then, the financial ramifications make it an utter impossibility, since a market like Milwaukee can't support a $20 million player.
  25. It makes me want to cry that this topic is even being seriously discussed. Well, now you know how I feel when I see Juan Pierre, Dave Roberts, Kenny Lofton, Steve Finley, Chone Figgins, etc. discussed as possible Brewers. At least Bonds is a good player. And, his defense looks like league average according to pretty much every model that looks at D. There's no way he's worse than Dunn, Lee, Ramirez, etc.
