  1. What do you think of it Brett? I liked it. I used to be kind of a bigger Mayer fan a few years ago. I was really into "Inside Wants Out" when I was in HS for some reason (I remember hearing about it on Audiogalaxy - blast from the past). I can't say I've listened to "Continuum" more than 5 times or so, but it's pretty good. I actually liked "Heavier Things" quite a bit, personally. I do think he gets a bum rap from people who listen to the kind of stuff I normally do. The way I look at it, he could have been singing about candy lips and bubblegum tongues for 10 years and kept selling, but he chose to go the complete opposite direction. Stagnation is something that will turn me off on an artist quickly.
  2. Heck, I mentioned buying that Mayer album in September in this thread and no one said a thing.
  3. This isn't really a rental, but for the past three weeks, IFC has been showing Jose Mojica Marins movies on Friday nights. The last two were "At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul" and "This Night I Will Possess Your Corpse", then last night was "Awakening of the Beast". They're all just weird, horror/goth films (except for the last one, which deals more with the perversion of society), the type of stuff I normally don't watch, but they are just really cool movies, made on shoestring budgets and in Portuguese with subtitles, and I think they were even banned in Brazil.
  4. I'd give White Light/White Heat 2.5/5 stars. Ouch. IMO, the thing that gets lost with this album (which is really a love/hate album) is that it was the first of it's kind. Now that we're basically 40 years removed from it, and have heard 10 Sonic Youth albums and whatnot, it's not as jarring as it was. It's still a great album, I think it's an album that requires multiple listens - but, it was intentionally rough, and it's an album that I think a lot of VU fans only listened to a handful of times.
  5. To me, the best thing about this is not having to hear Notre Dame fans who are also Packers fans say they should draft "The Shark". Most likely, this will be the last we hear of him for a few years, when he is out of baseball and his deal replaces Drew Henson's as the worst "football player given a bunch of money to play baseball" contract.
  6. of Montreal - "Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer" It comes out on Tuesday, I believe. It is terrific. This is going to be an exceptional year for music. Already a few really good albums I have heard, and I haven't heard the new Lucinda Williams, Son Volt, Gillian Welch, Ryan Adams (of course), and others that I have been anticipating. The Arcade Fire album is generating a lot of heat (pun), but I'm not that excited about it after hearing most of it. Tops on that list is Wilco's "Sky Blue Sky", which is coming out on 5/15.
  7. The store is here: www.cafepress.com/bfdotnet
  8. But he has just one year left on his deal and they have a guy in Gross that just might be able to match his numbers. Why not get the best of both worlds and play Gross in CF and Jenkins in RF (against RHP's)?
  9. I've heard that Shins album a couple of times, and I just don't get them at all. Another album that comes out on that day (1/23) that I love is "I Can't Go On, I'll Go On" by The Broken West. They sound kind of like a cross between Big Star and "Being There"-era Wilco, a lot of power pop stuff. I'm fairly certain that this band is going to blow up, at least in the way that TV on the Radio did. Of course, I also got ahold of the new Bloc Party this week, and it is awesome.
  10. Townes Van Zandt - Be Here to Love Me I've been heavy into the music docs for a while now, and outside of The Devil and Daniel Johnston, this is the best one I have seen. If you're not familiar with him (sadly a lot of people aren't), it likely won't be a hinderance to your enjoyment of the movie. It's mostly a sad story, I guess, but it's a pretty riveting movie regardless. And, it doesn't really sugarcoat the man - you get the feeling that if he wasn't one of the best songwriters ever, you'd despise him.
  11. I'd say a *relative* bargain. Just because other teams are doling out monster contracts to mediocre pitchers doesn't mean that it's the best thing to do.
  12. You can't trade draft picks in baseball. And Hardy and Vargas isn't really a place to start when going after players that good (particularly Crawford).
  13. He has some pretty decent numbers. He's the kind of guy that could help Nashville a lot, to win a AAA championship. With his numbers, it's odd that he has been stuck in AA so long, and with KC of all teams.
  14. I like Pena quite a bit, and I don't even think they would have to give up Cordero to get him. He really doesn't have a spot there, unless they decide to trade Lowell, move Youk back to 3B, and play Wily Mo at first.
  15. The complete lack of action in the best music of 2006 thread. Bummer.
  16. I'd be for it, just because they wouldn't be putting Hall in the OF and they'd actually be playing Gross. I'm as big of a Koskie fan as there is, but it makes a lot of sense.
  17. I just don't think Miller will get traded, just because he's a hometown-type of guy, and I don't see them trading him when he signed with the Brewers with the intention of retiring as one at the end of his contract. Not that I entirely agree with that way of thinking, though. I think Mench, and maybe Turnbow will get traded. I also think, though, that people who are clammoring for bullpen help in return might be overreaching, I think it would be a pure salary dump for an organizational soldier-type guy.
  18. Just for reference, if this thread were to get very active: http://tinypic.com/30vd3pl.jpg The article also says that the Brewers were closest to the league norms last year. Hopefully they wind up above the norms this year, they probably should be.
  19. I'm not sure if it's mentioned in either of the articles, but apparently the Padres are interested in him, too.
  20. I could see why a team in the NL would think a one year deal for Johnson would be a decent investment/risk, but to negotiate an extension makes no sense. He probably wouldn't cost a ton to acquire, and I think he might be able to have a 4.00 ERA, or something in the NL West.
  21. I'd rather have Weeks leadoff, Gross in CF and hitting second, Hall at SS, and Hardy on the bench or in AAA, personally. I have doubts about Hardy's ability to get on base, so I don't think he should hit second.
  22. Well, I'm not as sold on Hart as a lead-off option as others, and I think Gross and Weeks would be better options. I guess it depends if Gross actually gets to play, because I think he's the odd man out in the Hall to the OF thing, since I expect Jenkins in RF and Hart in LF.
  23. The only stated goal I can think of that they've missed on is adding a leadoff hitter. They have two of them on the roster in Weeks and Gross, so I don't know why they felt they needed one in the first place.
  24. If you're down with Sandy Alderson, I'm down with you.
  25. Gonzalez must really have some arm injury that scares the Pirates if they're going to trade him for Cabrera.
