  1. Sure didn't see that coming. I guess if he's not going to be effective in the pen, maybe a set of 5 innings can get him going. He's always wanted to be a starter. Pitching against the Nats is like making a start at Nashville. I'm really trying to convince myself here...not sure it's working. (love your new sig hawing)
  2. 2007: Joe Thatcher w/ SD - 22 appearances, 1.29 ERA, 2.67 K/BB, .90 WHIP, 3.33 FIP (.217 BABIP) Scott Linebrink w/ MIL - 27 app, 3.55 ERA, 2.27 K/BB, 1.50 WHIP, 4.11 FIP (.340 BABIP) Granted, some of the difference could have been BABIP related and it's not like Thatcher has done anything since and Linebrink has had a solid career, but in 2007 - Thatcher was a better pitcher than Linebrink. That was the principal reason for the trade and it didn't work out. San Diego probably knew he was spent and our scouts missed it. Linebrink being our third best reliever speaks more to how bad the pen was than how good he was.
  3. Was checking the Dodgers website today to get ready for my annual foray to Chavez Ravine...the front page article is on how good Mota is. Uggh.
  4. If Swindle can just be a decent LOOGY, that could free up Stetter for more extended work. The Brewers could really use a more reliable 7th inning option to get to Coffey & Hoffman. DiFelice has been solid as well but seems to be more of a ROOGY.
  5. I have a slightly different take on the Linebrink trade with a similar conclusion. It stunk for the Brewers even more since Thatcher was the reliever they needed down the stretch that they were looking for in Linebrink. I guess the final script won't be written until all the prospects and comp picks have their runs, and as fondy points out so far no one has been anything special, but for the Brewers ultimate goal of helping out the 2007 team it was a complete bust. Maybe it cost us one win on a team that lost the division by 2 games.
  6. For Escobar? Halladay? Maybe. Washburn/Morrow? No way Doug...don't do it.
  7. logan...that was basically what I meant. He was slow coming back and they seemed to blame it on the scar tissue. No reason that may not happen again at the beginning of next year. Sorry I wasn't clearer.
  8. Thats only fact if you use the archaic system Bud Selig used to judge market sizes, which was total population. Jump out of the 50s and try using demographics. We're in the upper half, and around 10th. our attendance is awesome and we're 3rd in TV ratings. We can maintain that if we continue to operate aggressively. How does Milwaukee's demographic profile put them 10th? Even if per capita income was above average and the ratings are higher, they aren't high enough to make up for the significantly smaller population. The Brewers have done a great job and the community supports them, but they are fairly close to maxing out their potential within the market. I'm not sure how much that relates to the demographic profile of Milwaukee.
  9. Bill Hall's post-Homer congratulations of other players even seems uncomfortable now. It's a "Bill, I love you and all, but do I really need to do such a long involved handhake with a guy who sits that deep on the bench? It's not like I'm doing this with Jody Gerut either." I feel bad for Billy. He seems like a genuinely good guy and good teammate, but he's just not a top flight baseball player anymore. Maybe he never was. If he can build himself into a super-sub - 2B, SS, 3B & OF for next year, maybe he's worth keeping since that saves us a little dough on a replacement, but he will never be a primary player with the Brewers again.
  10. You are probably right and it won't help, but they signed him to a minor league deal. How can he be overrated? I'd call him non-rated.
  11. This deal only makes sense if they are optimistic on Morrow. Washburn would be nice, but he won't go much below fair market value next year. We'd probably just let Looper go and spend a little extra for Washburn.. If I'm Melvin I'm not that concerned with 2009. I want to make sure any trade makes the team better for 2010. If he can get more for Hardy in the offseason, do it then. If Morrow is the guy you want...young and controlled for a while...go for it. If they trade Escobar there better be alot more coming back than what they are talking. I'd want the pitchers, 3TO, Ichiro, the SpaceNeedle, Bill Gates' house and all future rights to the Nintendo Wii.
  12. We can keep DFA'ng guys all you want, but there are no replacements out there that will dramatically change the trajectory of this team. The Gerut error was brutal, but the guy actually had a couple hits yesterday. It's not like Duffy or Nelson were that great...although I do miss Gabe Gross. Burns is just awful, I guess that's why Dillard is getting his well deserved start on Tuesday. The Nats are probably a team even Burns could handle. Someone mentioned this reminds them of 2006. That seemed like a complete collapse and free fall. This seems like a slow dribble towards mediocrity, with just enough glimmers of hope like Saturday night to keep us hooked. Any team with Prince, Braun and Yo will hang around for a while, but it will take more than that to make a run and I just do see it.
  13. That's it...Gamel, Escobar and Lawrie for Sharpie!!!
  14. Risking him accepting arby simply to get a pick is a little too risky. He's a nice piece for this year, but he'd make for an awfully expensive bench player next year. At $4-5mm for Lopez and $1-1.5mm for Counsell, sign me up for Craig. We'll need every last dime to spend on pitching. I'd move Hardy for sure to get some. Kendall probably needs to go if Salome is reasonably ready, but I think Corporan/Rivera would even worse. Biggest question is what to do with Cam. He really solidifies the D. His bat is inconsistent, but overall better than the average CF. We really have no options unless they move Rickie out there or Hart over. That will really take the D down on a team that has shaky pitching. He's probably a guy I bring back if he'll take a one year deal. Not sure what you do with Hall. If he can work offseason and play multiple field positions maybe he's worth keeping. We are stuck paying him anyway. I'd like to see Escobar lead off and drop Rickie back in the order. Problem is that wrist took a while to heal last time so he may start slow, but his power was ratcheting up. He may be a better 5/6 hitter than a leadoff.
  15. Whatever Counsell did during the offseason, Kendall needs to do for next year. The guy has been outstanding this year.
  16. McClung hasn't been the same since he made those starts. It makes you wonder if this had been brewing for awhile. Kind of like Bush's starts after he got hit with the liner. I'd rather see Dillard out there on Tuesday. CV can still be an effective reliever, don't waste him like we may have done with McClung. Either start Dillard, or even Burns, acquire someone soon or just keep crossing their fingers on Bush. Let's not start wasting more arms.
  17. If last night was a somewhat isolated incident that's one thing, but it isn't. Yo's had some extra days off recently so that's worth a few extra pitches so at this point it may be ok. However, the back end of the bullpen...Coffey, Stetter and Hoffman has been fine. He got them through 7. That should have been enough. He is getting overused. I hope they pull off the gas as the year winds down.
  18. Welcome aboard stalton...let's get the newbie a win Brewers!!!
  19. I sure wouldn't do a trade unless it benefitted 2010. It's going to take more than just a stud pitcher to catch up to the Cards this year. The Stros will fade and who knows about the Cubs, but count me as convinced that the Cards are a better team than the Brewers.
  20. From Brewercom on twitter: Kendall C Counsell 2B Braun LF Fielder 1B McGehee 3B Cameron CF Hart RF Hardy SS Parra P No Lopez...that's a little concerning.
  21. It's probably a moot point since Hardy will not be extended by the Brewers, but he is hardly in the Hall camp. He's not hitting the ball as well as the last two seasons, but he has also run into some bad luck this year. He's hit the ball pretty well at times, but right at people. His low BABIP supports that thesis. Maybe you guys are right as well that he isn't as good as the last two years either. However, he does have a high value since he plays good defense at a premium position and hits the ball far better than the average Shortstop. Hall is a bad hitter at a premium offensive position which makes his contract really hard to stomach. Even if Hardy got a Hall contract from the Brewers I can't imagine he would play anywhere near as far below the contract level as Hall has. His D alone and even his offensive stats this year are nowhere near as far below replacement value as Hall is. That being said, I fully agree that he needs to be moved for pitching if we don't move Escobar.
  22. They can re-sign Holliday after the season, but it will be a market offer. No different than before the trade. Hefty price for a rental, but they really do need a bat. I do think the moves they have made put them in the drivers seat for the division. Wallace may have been blocked if they didn't see him sticking at 3B. A big difference between this and our dealing LaPorta last year was our system was deeper. We had some extra position prospects that they don't have. For a system short on bats, they'll still have to step up and spend a lot of money that they may or may not have after this year to keep it going.
  23. Maybe we offer to train next spring in Roy's backyard. It's probably big enough.
