  1. They need to get him in the majors as soon as they can so if he gets busted again he isn't out of the game for good. Pretty silly that the rules work that way but whatever.
  2. ERA isn't a measurement of how good a pitcher is pitching, it is as simple as that. You need 500 IP before ERA becomes meaningful, talking about it over 150 IP just isn't going to do anyone any good.
  3. Gallardo has shown without a doubt that he is a true #1 this year. Just because he is tiring some late in the year doesn't suddenly change the rest of the season. He still has the 8th best xFIP in baseball on the year, if that isn't a #1 your expectations are just set way too high.
  4. #2-#4 play such a small role in scoring that going from worst to best in them is probably 1 win so not sure they should spend more time showing us those stats.
  5. Except at this point there is no reason to think Parra's fastball is worth anything. He has had the worst fastball in baseball over the past 3 years, might be because his command is so bad they just sit on the fastball, might be the lack of movement on it, might be problems out of the stretch. The results though show that regardless of how good his velocity is his fastball is not a major league quality pitch. Parra has never really looked the same after his injuries, he wouldn't be the first promising young prospect to have his career derailed after a couple of injuries.
  6. Bush has gotten worse 4 years in a row now and his peripherals this season are about where Suppan's were the last couple of years. Not really going to be bothered by this. Narveson has pitched better than Bush this year, his ERA just isn't as good.
  7. I would still follow baseball and still like the teams I like now, but I wouldn't pick another team to follow the way I follow the Brewers.
  8. Braves Reds Rockies(really anyone but padres will do) Phillies Yankees Twins Rangers Rays Reds vs Rays world series.
  9. I think it was a dubious signing even without the injuries. His ERA always looked really fluky so I think the $$ was way too much.
  10. Out of all pitchers in the NL with at least 80 IP on the year Parra comes in last for runs saved with his fastball at -1.91/100 Last year out of all pitchers in the NL with at least 120 IP on the year Parra came in last for runs saved with his fastball at -1.76/100 (Suppan was 2nd to last at -1.7) In 2008 out of all the pitchers in the NL with at least 120 IP on the year Parra came in 3rd to last in runs saved with his fastball at -1.55/100. A pitcher can get by with a bad fastball if he has really good secondary stuff but Parra hasn't been consistent with his secondary pitchers the last 2 years. Last year his slider was a good pitch and his splitfinger was decent, this year only his SF has been above average. Parra should probably be moved into the bullpen, he just does not have a major league quality fastball and his secondary stuff is not good enough to get through a lineup 3 times without one.
  11. I haven't really posted in this thread but every time I read a jsonline entry by Witardo I get the feeling he doesn't like the team and can't wait to find some reason to rag on the players.
  12. Ennder was pretty high on Gomez last offseason. I remember something about showing signs of having better plate discipline. Woah there, don't go so far as to say I was high on Gomez. I said he might not be as terrible as people think and there were reasons to think he could be growing as a player. I had extremely low expectations for him still and was one of the few people who thought signing Edmonds was a good idea. Here is one of my posts about him... I don't think it is fair to evaluate Gomez just on what he has done at the major league level so far without considering his age. His BB/K both improved last year as did his LD%. There are certainly positive indicators in his stats to suggest he is getting better. His out of zone swing % dropped from 37% in 2008 to 30% last year as well which clearly indicates better pitch recognition. This is a player who at least appears to be improving even if it isn't apparent from last years slash stats. It is really going to come down to what they spend the money they saved on. If they pick up like Lackey or something then I'm happy about it. If we pick up Washburn and Davis then I think the team got worse. We picked up Davis so I think the team got worse~.
  13. Gomez is a career .242 hitter and his career best is .258, of course hitting .260 sounds good to him. It would be showing growth.
  14. Iirc you were posting that Gomez had some hidden growth last season, too. Can't remember why you cited that it was hidden then... LD% maybe? Improved BB%, improved K%, improved pitch recognition. There were certainly reasons to hope he was improving as a hitter even if it wasn't showing up in his results yet. It is hard to know how much of it is real with only one partial year of data though. Where gomez has really struggled this year is in infield hits, he used to be one of the best in the league at getting IFH and this year he has been about average with it. Don't know if it is bad luck this year or he is losing speed or what. With Gwynn it is very different, this isn't hope of improving, he has actually improved by quite a bit the past couple of years. This year you just aren't seeing it because of a lot of bad luck in BABIP. Gwynn had a .350 OBP last year and his BB rate has increased again this year as has his ISO. The difference is a .245 BABIP compared to a career .291. Gwynn's is also a 2 year trend now. Gwynn is nothing special at all but he seems capable of holding close to a .350 OBP in the long term at least.
  15. http://baseballanalysts.c...0/08/countbased_line.php Count Runs/PA 3&0 0.207 3&1 0.137 2&0 0.097 3&2 0.062 2&1 0.035 1&0 0.034 0&0 0.000 1&1 -0.016 2&2 -0.037 0&1 -0.043 1&2 -0.083 0&2 -0.104 It is pretty easy to see just how much poor strike zone recognition/control hurts a player. It really doesn't matter how talented you are if you are always behind in the count you won't be a good hitter.
  16. I'm fine with Capuano getting innings now btw, I was referring to the insinuation that Narveson should have been sat to make room for Capuano earlier in the year. Capuano is unlikely to ever pitch a full season in the majors again as a starter, the odds are really against him.
  17. Very odd time period to try to work with. Just going to add a few names that would be in the low end of the discussion. Seems like a lot of players could flesh out like 7-10. Keith Hernandez, Ryne Sandberg, Ozzie Smith, Dwight Evans,
  18. It is most likely Bergen with his career -15 WAR. Jack Ryan was pretty bad too. In 2327 career PA he managed a .217 career average but just a .249 OBP and .281 SLG. He played almost every position but was pretty poor at all of them.
  19. The only reason to give Capuano a lot more innings is because someone is hurt.
  20. I think that defensive spectrum is hardest to easiest, I disagree with it being most valuable to least valuable.
  21. If I had to start one of them full time next year I'd go with Gwynn, he has at least shown some growth over the past couple years even if this years growth is hidden because of a low BABIP. Gomez has pretty much stagnated since he came up and really should be sent down to AAA so he can play every day.
  22. This kind of argument has a ton of merit, just looking at OPS+ doesn't, I guess that was my point. Didn't want to quote the entire thing so just quoted the end.
  23. What? This is just totally incorrect. It was still 60'6" to the plate and Walter Johnson could throw 95 MPH+. Do you think if Craig Counsell was born in 1880 he would have been better than Ty Cobb? Not a chance, in fact considering the league was only half as big Counsell probably never would have made it at all. Do you consider Ty Cobb an average hitter? The league OPS in the NL when Ruth played was under .650 and it wasn't just because of pitching, it was because the majority of the players in the game were slap hitters. To answer the other statement, I think comparing players to their peers is a pretty terrible way to define a player. The wider range of players in the league at any given time the more the best players stand out using a comparative measure like OPS+ or ERA+. Babe Ruth wasn't a better player because the league was full of slap hitters. I don't think stats before like 1950 are really comparable to today's stats in any meaningful way. But again I'm not really trying to make this about Babe Ruth, you could insert any of the old time greats into this and I'd feel the same way.
  24. I'm not specifically singling out Ruth here, he was just an easy example, I'm just saying that OPS+ might be fun but it really isn't very accurate. If you magically moved Ruth or any player of his era into today's game his OPS+ would go down almost without a doubt. His OPS would probably go down a lot less than his OPS+ did.
  25. Lets be honest here, OPS+ is a fun stat and all but it really isn't a very accurate one for comparing players. Ruth played in an era where the average hitter was Craig Counsell. Yeah he was a men amongst boys but the quality of players at the time really inflates his stats. You can't really compare players across eras using statistics. To use a silly example, if baseball had a strike and all of the current players were replaced by scabs except Pujols who kept playing for some reason, his OPS+ would skyrocket even though he didn't suddenly become a better player.
