  1. I don't think contention had anything to do with not trading anyone. There was no market for Fielder and Hart got hurt. Maybe we could have moved like Edmonds as a salary dump or something but that kind of trade can still happen.
  2. This article would make a really good rorschach test given the various responses to it.
  3. Giants aren't likely to trade Bumgarner for 1 year of Fielder. I agree that the trade packages we get offered for Fielder are going to be extremely underwhelming and most likely we don't even trade him.
  4. Upgrade over Escobar and Gomez.
  5. I have to say I pretty much disagree with this 100%. The only move that would make any kind of sense would be moving Weeks considering Hart got hurt and lost all his value. This seems like a terrible time to blow up the team though, making trades just to trade guys isn't how we are going to compete next year. There have been almost no impact players traded this past week, it has been a bunch of garbage for salary dumps. Trades like these wouldn't help the team in any way.
  6. Westbrook hasn't had a healthy season since 2006 though and has really only had 1 good healthy season in his entire career. This trade could just as easily be a net loss for the Cardinals. This is basically saying Jay is a better replacement of than Suppan is a replacement pitcher and they are probably correct unless Jay totally falls apart.
  7. We play in the weakest division in baseball, half of our schedule is always going to be against non impressive teams. As for selling, we have very little of value to sell unfortunately. Nobody is going to trade for Fielder when they can get Berkman or Dunn for less. Hart got hurt at the worst time possible or he probably would have been traded. Guys like Hoffman and Edmonds aren't bringing back a major league quality player. We aren't in a position where we want to trade the real youth of the team like Lucroy, Axford and Escobar. No contender wants Manny Parra or Chris Narveson at this point because they are just too erratic. Dave Bush could be traded but he isn't going to bring back much. I doubt we want to trade Gallardo since pitching is our problem. That leaves our only real trading chip right now being Rickie Weeks and I get the feeling they want to extend him, not trade him. Wolf would have been an option if he pitched anything like his career or previous 3 season peripherals but he has taken a major step back on the year. Edit : Oops I missed one. McGehee probably has some trade value too, not sure what could be expected in return for him though since it is hard to really know what kind of player he is yet. I'll take it a step further and say we are going to really struggle to trade Fielder this offseason, I'd put the odds at 50/50 tops. It has to be a team that thinks they can are contenders and Fielder is the final piece that can put them over the top and probably a team that thinks they can sign him long term after trading for him. The list of teams that are viable for that is really small.
  8. I read somewhere that there was basically no interest from other teams for Bush and I don't really blame them given his peripherals on the year.
  9. Of course most of these trades are getting negative reviews for what they are bringing back. I don't think Melvin is going to trade Fielder for a bunch of middling prospects and that is what teams seem to be willing to give up. Hart is pretty much impossible to trade because of the injury.
  10. I think he would almost definitely be picked up by someone. He has had a bad year but doesn't have a bad track record and a lot of playoff caliber teams have worse guys starting for them.
  11. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/07/angels-trade-joe-saunders.html
  12. He certainly was in the best of condition which might have helped him stay healthy. Of course not throwing him out there for 237 IP in 2004 when we weren't playing for anything and he was having back issues probably would have been a good idea too.
  13. I'd have to think if this is season ending it could also be career ending which is a shame.
  14. I know you say it as a joke but everything about Suppan is basically a carbon copy of the past 2 years except his BABIP and LOB%. He is the same lame 5 ERA pitcher he was over the past 3 years, the 6 ERA is mostly just a fluke. The difference between his 'good' year in 2007 and his bad year this year is marginal at best even with an ERA that is almost 1.50 higher.
  15. His fastball is too straight and hittable, I think Parra ends up in the bullpen at some point as well.
  16. Bush has a career ERA of 4.65 now over 1035 IP. Other pitchers with an ERA in that same general range with 600+ IP include Marquis, Floyd, Silva, Chen, Suppan, Lohse, Perez, Francis, Jackson etc. Sure you don't build your rotation around them but not like Melvin is somehow an idiot for keeping a guy around that fits this mold. If you use xFIP instead taking into account he is in a bad park for his skillset and plays with a bad defense behind him he is a 4.45 xFIP pitcher. Other pitchers around the same xFIP include Willis, Padilla, Blanton, E. Santana, Davis, Garza, Meche, Arroyo, Carmona, Cain(yes outside of that park he would not be a 'stud'), Garland, Snell etc on top of many of those same names. Almost every team has 1 or 2 Dave Bush type pitchers in the rotation, usually one is a young up and comer and one is an older guy. Dave Bush is hardly a symbol of anything, he is just a #4 pitcher on a team that has struggled to produce #1-#3 quality arms.
  17. It isn't so much that Escobar has a lot of value, it is the fact that very few Brewer players currently on the roster have much value.
  18. To be fair the people who ripped on him preseason mostly just assumed age meant bad defense, that or they were basing it on a small sample of UZR from 2008. Defense is just a hard thing to judge, stats take forever to become meaningful and fans can watch the same player and one says he is below average and the next says he is great... think J.J. Hardy as an example.
  19. That opinion is fine and all, if you think he should play full time to see if he can improve I'm ok with it. Just playing him because he got 3 hits the night before isn't a good idea though, That is like starting him just because he is 3 for 6 in his career of some random pitcher.
  20. Edmonds being a 40-year-old who hasn't done much this year doesn't make him a better choice either. Career numbers mean nothing for him at this point. That's the point I'm trying to make. Macha should ride the hot hand and not play matchups using career numbers. One game is not a hot hand...
  21. Going 3 for 4 last night doesn't somehow make Gomez a better choice for today...
  22. I doubt Cain is an upgrade over Edmonds against RHP. It wouldn't bother me to see Gomez sent down though to see if we can't salvage something out of him with some minor league full time play.
  23. Bill Hall is useful as a sub against LHP and that is about it. That just wasn't a need at all for the Brewers which had an almost completely RH lineup.
  24. He had a 4.96 xFIP in June and has a 4.51 xFIP in July so it is pretty much just random fluctuation. It is nice to see him back to his career peripherals though, before June he was statistically one of the worst pitchers in baseball, even if his ERA didn't show it.
  25. Wouldn't be the first time a whole team was delusional.
