  1. Pretty sure The Book found a small correlation but I'd have to pull it out. Oops noticed that joepepsi posted the same thing in his post above but going to go ahead and leave it anyway.
  2. Pavano is a step ahead of Suppan, it was really obvious that Suppan's ERA was a combination of park and defense for STL as his peripherals were still generally in the upper 4s. Pavano is consistently in the low 4's for peripherals. I would be ok with a 2 year deal for Pavano but not interested at all in a 3 year deal and a 4 year deal would be terrible.
  3. Gallardo slots into a #1 slot even if it is a low end #1 after the year he put in last year, but we won't go into that again I guess. Marcum is a bit harder to judge but he is fine as the #3 and Wolf as a #4. I dont' think we have a true #2.
  4. I don't mind Lawrie for Marcum but the one thing that does bother me is I'd much prefer Lawrie+someone for someone with more time or more upside than Marcum. So if rival executives had no idea Lawrie was available that bothers me some.
  5. Pitchers almost universally lose velocity with age so you have to be careful with that kind of trend.
  6. Well if it is Lawrie maybe the deal has other players on both sides. Not going to judge this until we have real details instead of 'my sources say'.
  7. I think Lawrie is really overrated but I certainly wouldn't give Lawrie+ another prospect for Marcum.
  8. I really like Marcum, just hope we didn't give up too much for him.
  9. They want a bat like Gonzalez for the next 6 years, not for one year. The only way they are taking Fielder is if they can sign him long term and I don't see it happening. Sure make the call but I won't blame him when nothing happens.
  10. I completely agree with rams. Fielder has significantly less value than Gonzalez does. I'd expect to get a much weaker offer than the Padres got.
  11. 3.75 xFIP in 2008 4.10 xFIP in 2009 Looks like he's been worthy of a spot in our pen longer than just one year. Those are not exactly good stats for a RP, especially the 2009 ones. 2008 FIP was 4.49, 2009 FIP was 4.28 also not good for a RP. His career HR/9 is now 1.31 in 425 IP which suggests the FIPs are probably more accurate than the xFIPs at this point. Last years 3.74 FIP, 3.39 xFIP and large jump in K/9 makes him look a lot better as a RP than we saw in the rest of his time as a Brewer.
  12. The article you linked even agrees that they are better than using ERA, kind of hurts your argument here. You don't use just FIP, you use all of the tools available of which ERA is one of the weaker ones. Any pitcher who can keep his BB/9 under 2 is going to have some success. Any pitcher who allows a lot of balls in play is going to see big swings in ERA year to year due to BABIP/LOB% and needs a good defense behind him, it is just the nature of having a lot of guys on base. The fact his K/9 slipped and he is turning 35 realy scares me though. I wouldn't give this kind of guy more than 2 years.
  13. Last year was the first time he displayed skills worth having on the roster as a RP so hopefully that was a fluke and not him showing actual improvement since we traded him.
  14. Sad to hear the news, never good when a long time baseball guy passes away. I still would put him in the top 10 most annoying broadcasters in baseball history though. Hawk being #1 of course.
  15. This contract has disaster written all over it imo.
  16. Not a great place for HRs either which can only help him.
  17. Steve Phillips generally comes off as an idiot to me but that video was pretty fair.
  18. Nice, another overpaid guy we don't have to worry about signing.
  19. I'm really glad I'm not a Tigers fan.
  20. I really don't see any reason to expect Washburn to be significantly better than Davis or Bush at this point in his career. He kills lefties and is mediocre vs righties and as he gets older the righties are going to hurt him more and more. He has played his entire career in pitcher parks in a division that is known for being pitcher friendly which easily offsets the AL thing. Stick him in Miller Park with the Brewers fielding behind him and I'd expect that 4.86 xFIP much more often than the 4.10 ERA.
  21. The problem with Doug Melvin more than anything is they haven't had success drafting pitching. You can blame anything else you want but you aren't getting at the true source of the problem. He inherited a team with no talent at all and not a whole lot in the minors either and they decided to focus on offense first and when they started to work on the pitching none of it panned out. The Suppan deal was painful but most of his other deals have very little to do with the current state of the team. The only other deal that really can be easily second guessed is the Sabathia one but since we made the playoffs I find it hard to really complain about that one. I guess you could add the deal that cost us Nelson Cruz but considering he took that long to make the majors and hasn't really hit outside of Texas I'd say that one is just nitpicking. If the Brewers traded 4 top prospects for Grienke I'd be extremely upset.
  22. Duke isn't someone I'd want as anything but a cheap #5. He is like Dave Bush, a 4.50ish ERA type guy but who lets way too many balls in play so his actual ERA is going to be at the whim of LOB%/BABIP/(HR/FB%). That typically isn't the type of guy you want to put in front of a below average defense in a neutral/hitters park.
  23. Felix Hernandez is pretty deserving. His peripherals were as good as Lee's and he pitched more innings.
  24. Gavin Floyd is available for trade, might not be a bad way to get one of the pitchers and then with Floyd, Wolf, Narveson, Gallardo you can go a bit riskier with the #5 guy.
  25. Gonzalez is part of why it will be hard to shop Fielder. He is a better version of Prince, one that can play 1B and has a body type that will most likely keep him healthy longer. Until Adrian gets traded I don't think there will be much of a market for Fielder and since there aren't all that many teams that can pull off a trade for these types of guys I just find it hard to believe we are going to find someone to take Fielder.
