  1. I'll go with Honus Wagner only I'll make him retire when he turns 39. At that point in his career his OPS+ was something like 170 and he played very strong defense at SS and threw in 50+ SB a year.
  2. I don't really know the contract status of all the players but I'd have to put Mauer, Utley, Longoria, Zimmerman, Adrian Gonzalez, Votto and Tulo up there. You could make a case for Braun and/or Fielder but their defense probably hurts too much.
  3. His OPS against splits for his career really do suggest pitching from the stretch could be part of the problem. His OPS against with runners on 1st is higher than without. His OPS against with RISP are actually better than his overall number. I don't know where to find numbers specific to pitching from the stretch though.
  4. Most likely it will be someone who is just as bad as Yost and Macha and 75% of the other managers in baseball.
  5. Statistically speaking Parra has had one of the worst fastballs in baseball each of the past 3 years now. He is throwing it less and less because it is just so hittable. He can throw hard but there is basically no movement on it.
  6. Shutting Gallardo down at some point would make sense to me. At this point it is probably best if they start thinking of Parra as a RP next year, it is obvious his fastball is not major league quality. Gallardo, Wolf, Narveson and 3-4 random FA or minor league guys. Not really looking good for next year.
  7. I saw the Brewers win a playoff game. I saw one of only 3 pitchers in MLB history to give up 4 straight HR.
  8. That just isn't true at all from the article though. Winning and defense are two different things and they barely have anything to do with each other. If you were going to look at defense you would compare it to runs allowed which is the part of the quote you left off. Comparing fielding percentage to winning percentage is pretty much useless.
  9. Parra has a minor league quality fastball basically. It is more or less the entire reason he hasn't found success and leads to the really high BABIP.
  10. My issue with Bush is the pretty clear downward trend in his peripherals. xFIP has gone - 3.76, 4.36, 4.67, 4.79, 4.98. He has gotten worse 4 years in a row now. His K/9 has slipped under 6 and he is walking more than 3 per 9 now and his ground ball rates have gone down. This is not the type of pitcher you want to sign at all, you are just hoping he has some luck with ERA each year. Back in 2006/2007 I thought he could be a pretty effective #3 but all of his peripherals have taken a dive since then and now he is lucky to be a #4.
  11. Phillies in 2008 had very mediocre starting pitching outside of Hamels. Rockies in 2007 didn't have a single starter with a sub 4 ERA. Cardinals in 2006 had very mediocre pitching outside of Carpenter. What you can't do is have mostly mediocre pitching and then a mediore bullpen and bad defense. It just makes it too hard to overcome with offense. We haven't developed many bullpen arms, we've had bad defensive players and we haven't drafted many good pitchers. You can't survive on offense alone.
  12. I wouldn't bring him back. His skills are slipping and he didn't have a great skillset to begin with. ERA is utterly useless over 120 IP and quality starts are a sham, I'll go with his peripherals which are worse than his career norms on the year.
  13. Narveson and/or Parra to have a strong finish to give hope for them being a strong part of the rotation next year. If both have strong finishes I'll be very optimistic about next season. That is really all it would take for me. The team basically played like I expected for most of the season but had a terrible stretch early that they can't hope to recover from. There are a lot of positives to take away from the season even with the current record.
  14. It is also important to note that the Brewers needed to replace every single position on the team via the draft pretty much. This isn't the case of a team that can target certain positions because they were obvious needs, every single position was an obvoius need. I completely understand why the Brewers focused on hitting, it is more reliable in the draft and we needed reliability. What really bothers me with these years of drafting is the total disregard for defense. You can put a team full of sluggers on the field with mediocre pitching and find success as long as the defense isn't bad as well.
  15. One other thing of note, our starting pitching hasn't been nearly as bad as people make them out to be under Melvin. He inherited Sheets and nothing else and the past 7 years here are our ranks in starter ERA (xFIP). 2010 - 15(12) 2009 - 16(13) 2008 - 2(3) 2007 - 8(6) 2006 - 11(2) 2005 - 6(9) 2004 -9(3) Our starters were actually well above average from 2004-2008(4 of 5 years we had one of the top 6 rotations by xFIP) and we just kind of hit a black hole where nobody we sign seems to be able to pitch anymore. You'll also notice the xFIP rank is almost always better than the ERA rank, that is the defense and park coming into play. A lot of what makes the pitching so bad is just the bad defense that we have had for so long.
  16. This really isn't surprising at all. Going to the post season bumps attendance the next season so our 2009 numbers were inflated and likely not sustainable. I'd imagine this is a trend in baseball for teams that aren't generally playoff teams who suddenly make it one season. That isn't to say that our record isn't part of it as well. We had a miserable 3 weeks in early May and have been a slightly over .500 team the rest of the year as expected and that is going to hurt attendance. If that miserable streak had happened in August I bet our attendance is higher on the year. The fact it happened so early hurt.
  17. So Jack Z deserves credit for the good players and Melvin the blame for the bad. Never do understand this line of thinking. We have done poorly overall in the draft because we drafted too many poor defensive players who make developing young pitching almost impossible. I'm a firm believer that if we had even an average defense Parra would be a successful starter at this point and a lot of these patchwork type pitchers we have signed would have pitched more to their career averages rather than having the worst season of their career like they all seem to. As for DePodesta, I'd be fine with that.
  18. Weeks is probably just trying to stay healthy.
  19. It really comes down to the pitching. Gallardo, Good pitcher, Wolf is a decent enough top 3 so if we can get a good pitcher to slot in as the #2 I'm all for playing for 2011. If it doesn't work out then I'd look towards 2012 instead of spending on 2011.
  20. Anyone who was being honest with themselves knew those guys were on steroids even during the chase.
  21. Ron Santo whines about every play against the Cubs. That guy is almost as annoying as Hawk is.
  22. When we are talking hall of fame Andre Dawson had like 10 down years. But yeah I wouldn't worry about him long term. Sitting him for a few days wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.
  23. I'm sure he did shop Bush around. He could have shopped ever single player on the team for all we know. Every time Bush's name came up on trade rumor sites it was followed by nobody has any interest in him. I'm guessing teams just didn't want him more than anything.
  24. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/a...id=mil&partnerId=rss_mil "Yet Bush, 30, is generating almost no trade buzz. "I get a kick out of teams talking about all of these other pitchers, and [bush] has more quality starts than all of them," general manager Doug Melvin said. "He's pitched as well or better than some of these names I hear on the trade front. "His name never comes up. That's fine. That's Dave Bush. He always goes under the radar." Nobody wanted Bush.
  25. I thought the problem was we already had too many 4/5 types. This is what Wolf, Davis, Bush etc are.
