  1. Just terrible. It is hard to even read anything they write these days.
  2. Phillies win it all since they have the best starting 3 imo. AL is completely up for grabs but I'll be boring and take the Yankees.
  3. I said they were probably an 81 win team but I guessed they'd fall on the +4 end and end up 85. I guessed the wrong way http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif.
  4. There are a lot of valid criticisms of Melvin (free agent signings, trades), but I have no idea where this one is coming from. He may waste money on bad pitching, but he is all class. Ever take a Rorschach test? People who don't like a particular manager or GM or player will always find a way to think something bad about them no matter what happens.
  5. I cheated and looked it up but I can honestly say you could have given me another hint every day the rest of 2010 and I still would never have gotten it unless one of the hints included his name, heh.
  6. Really depends on what he is asking for. If he wants a guarantee that he gets to start and he wants a decent sized contract then I probably wouldn't. I just don't trust him to stay healthy all year. If he is willing to start the year in a long relief role and be the 6th starter to fill in once someone goes down or stinks, then I'd sign him in a second.
  7. The Brewers have been a couple games over .500 over the last 6 years now. The last time we had a 6 year stretch this good was 87-92. Before that it was 78-83. I dunno, hard for me to call his record bad given our payroll, market size and the team he started with. I don't think joe average GM would have us in better shape that is for sure, some of the best GMs in the game probably would though... they all have other jobs though.
  8. Yeah. keep in mind over the past 120 games the Brewers are 62-58 with a team ERA of 4.34 and obviously a solid offense. The first 40 games we went 15-25 with an ERA of 5.28. The pitching came out with almost every pitcher on the team underperforming and just built too big of a hole for us to realistically come out of. Part of that can be blamed on personel choices but a lot of it was just bad starts which are part of baseball.
  9. I'd say Gallardo or Weeks.
  10. I just don't think any team in our division was clearly better than an 84 win team going into the season other than maybe the Cardinals if they had good luck with health. I thought the Brewers could contend more because the division is weak than anything else.
  11. I would think at the very least he has to earn his job at some point. NO way you give him the job by default.
  12. No he can't rebound because he was nothing different than his previous 2 seasons. Most of his critics have been overreacting to a small sample of bad control which is completely in the realm of natural variance.
  13. I will take the under on this. He made a couple of terrible choices and the media suggests they were not under his control, but in general he has made ok choices.
  14. I didn't like the trade at the time but most of the stats being used to compare these players at this time are just useless.
  15. I highly doubt we find anything worth trading Fielder for.
  16. Ok I'll put it another way since what I said didn't come out correctly. Jon Garland is one of the worst pitchers in baseball who routinely has a full time job which is what the Brewers were looking for, established pitchers. His career 4.70 FIP and 4.59 xFIP are some of the worst stats you can find over an 2000 IP career. Only 4 pitchers in baseball history have 2k+ IP and a worse FIP than Garland does and he is still young and likely to pass some of them on the list. Suppan, Traschel, Hentgen and Wakefiled were all as good or better than him in their primes. Only 20 pitchers in baseball history have 2k IP careers with an ERA worse than Garland. He has had exactly one above average season from a peripheral standpoint and that was 5 years ago. Garland wouldn't have been a better choice than Davis other than the fact he happened to stay healthy and Davis did not. I'd still rather have him because of age but not getting Garland is no big loss.
  17. Garland is one of the worst pitchers in baseball, Davis got hurt. There isn't much difference between the two. Given he exact same contracts I'd pick Garland though just because of his age.
  18. A Historic is the more common usage because of the way the H sounds in the word. You say An Hour because the H in hour sounds like OW. An Historic still gets used though and usually that means they let it slide since A vs An isn't a hard and fast rule.
  19. I would gladly take the under on 35 HR for him next year though. This screams of a season where he was hot all year.
  20. Bert Campaneris hit 22 HR in 1970. His second most in his carrer was 8 and he had averaged only around 4 a year at that point.
  21. "For years defensive metrics didn't like Hardy all that much when observation showed him to be a better defender than his numbers would have suggested" This seems backwards, the fans tend to think Hardy isn't that good because he isn't flashy and doesn't look to have much range but the metrics say he is good giving him one of the best UZR/150 in baseball over his career.
  22. If you like feel good stories look up John Lindsey. A 33 year old rookie with over 5000 minor league ABs finally got his first major league AB last light. To make things more interesting he was brought into the game on Thursday night as a pinch hitter and they brought in a new RP and Lindsey got PH hit for again not getting an AB, which seems pretty fitting for someone who took so long to get brought up in the first place, heh.
  23. But again almost all of that is in BABIP which also improve SLG. Castro is one of those guys who will likely hit the exact same next year but people will say he is going through a sophomore slump because his OPS drops by .050 points and he hits under .290 when it will just be regressing to the mean in luck. If you give Escobar the same BABIP as Castro and assume all the extra hits are singles he gains 33 singles on the year which is an insane number because they have been on the opposite spectrum of luck, Castro has been one of the luckiest in baseball and Escobar given his speed and contact rate has been one of the unluckiest. That turns Escobar's line into .325/.370/.423/.793. Right now Castro is at .321/.363/.443/.806. The difference in their hitting is 100% in BABIP and while some of that may be a skill of Castros not that much of it most likely is. This is pretty easily shown in their peripherals as Escobar has had better plate discipline and a better LD% so it is fully supported. I think Castro has been more of a fluke than anything and I'll take the superior speed and fielding of Escobar.
  24. Is that really true though. Escobar has lower K/9, higher BB/9, higher LD%,. All of theier contact rates, rates of swinging at balls out of the zone etc are just small percentage points apart. The biggest thing I can really find that Castro has done better is have a higher BABIP and a lot of times that is just a factor of luck, especially given the gap in LD%(Escobar's is 3.3% higher but with almost a .100 difference in BABIP). Granted Escobar has popped out more which is part of it but I still thnk most of the difference is just balls falling in or not between these two.
  25. Escobar based on what they have done this year. Better fielder, better baserunner. Castro has a little more power but not a ton more. Most of the difference in their results on the year is just BABIP(.366 vs .279), I don't put much stock in that. I don't know enough about Castro's minor league career to comment on the big picture though.
