  1. I'd rather lock up Braun and Gallardo than Fielder, not sure we can afford to sign all 3 long term and not sure Fielder should be signed to a long deal in the NL.
  2. 2008 was an elbow injury and 2009 was a strained ribcage that he hurt while batting. I haven't really seen anyone but you suggest that he wasn't really hurt and there is pretty much no way last years was since we had no rotation depth at the time and the team collapsed while Suppan and Bush were hurt. Not to mention they had an MRI done on him and it showed a strain, I doubt they were doctoring the results. He also pitched significantly worse after each injury.
  3. If Suppan stays and we actually lose one of the other guys I think it is a complete disaster. If he stays and ends up in the rotation to start the season it is probably a mistake. If he gets released it probably is a mistake but a minor one. But if we release Bush, Parra or Narveson and keep Suppan it would be just a terrible move, especially given how the spring has played out.
  4. It is very rare for a major league team not to use at least 8 different starters in a year. When you have a roster that is a marginal playoff roster at best every little bit can make a difference. These comments on how useless Suppan is are the same ones people made after his rough start last year when he came out and posted a 12.91 ERA over his first 2 starts. After that he settled down into a pedestrian 4.90 ERA the rest of the way which is more like expectations and pretty much in line with 2008. I suspect Suppan is something like a 4.80-5.20 true talent starter at this point which sounds terrible but still could be useful as a fill in starter late in the season. I don't think we should just release him but at this point he shouldn't be one of the starting 5 given how spring has shaken out.
  5. I don't know about the rest of the game but the first inning he didn't pitch bad. He gave up a little bunt single that died in the thick grass and then a really good power hitter took him deep. He threw the ball pretty well though. I don't know about the other 4 IP, 4H and 3 ER though because I had to go to bed. As long as he isn't walking people I think you have to call his outing good though. If he can cut out the walks the rest will follow.
  6. The Brewers are considered to have one of the best medical staffs in baseball so I'm guessing that the way they handled the situation is pretty standard and not just slacking off.
  7. Well with Trendle he didn't really have another option and the other guys didn't really play, so hard to say he was fixated on them.
  8. Pitching WAR is a pretty terrible stat though. Suppan was not below replacement level in 2008, he probably was in 2009 though.
  9. I think Derrick Turnbow is a great guy but he was never a good pitcher. He is the perfect example of why a single season of success doesn't mean much for a RP. In a few years another ex-Brewer will be a 2nd example in Grant Balfour.
  10. I'm going to shock the world by disagreeing. He might not be the prototypical 2nd hitter this year but we don't have that player on the roster. I don't want a part time C at the top of the order and I don't see another player who clearly fits the position. The closest at this point is probably McGehee and that is only if he repeats last season. Escobar won't carry a really high OBP but he should hit like .280 with a .320-.330 OBP and that probably is enough.
  11. I think people are too harsh on Suppan and even I agree he should probably be out at this point. Last year was clearly a decline even before the injury and while spring isn't a huge deal it still points to him not being improved at all. At best you can make a marginal case for Suppan being the teams 5th best starter and I think the poor spring probably should lead to a loss of the job.
  12. yeah slightly better. Better with RISP than without as well and about the same in high and low leverage situations though his peripherals are actually better in high leverage situations.
  13. Not only has he given up 4 HR but he's given up a bunch of other hard hit flyballs. If Parra, Bush and Narveson all keep pitching like they have I don't see how they can go with Suppan if he is going to throw like this.
  14. The stats really don't agree with this at all but I think I had this disagreement with people enough last year that I don't think anyone is going to change their mind about it. Once the fans give a player a reputation in their head no amount of stats will convince them otherwise.
  15. Brewers play 5-6 games a week, each of those guys will probably find their way in the lineup 1 time a week so that means 50% or so of the games probably see a righty on the bench, more once someone gets hurt.
  16. I'm not a big fan of Span but the deal wasn't that big so I guess it is fine. I think he'll be stretched defensively trying to play CF and if you take some of that BABIP away he is a pretty pedestrian hitter so he needs to improve to have much value though he takes his walks so hard for him to have negative value. He is young so no reason he can't improve obviously.
  17. I really don't think it is a huge deal. We aren't pinch hitting for Fielder obviously and if any other lefty is in the lineup it means a righty is on the bench that day. It isn't ideal but it isn't a huge deal either. It is going to hurt us the most late in games when you want to say PH with Edmonds but as soon as we PH with him they bring in a loogy to face him so it might mean a Gomez batting a few extra times when a PH would have been better. By mid season I fully expect Hart to be sitting on the bench half the time though and he can be the PH.
  18. I'd say it went to Parra and Bush. When you only have one pitcher with an ERA under 5 it really doesn't matter who was better though.
  19. Sure TH could have a vibe but he has posted opinion many times in the past as well so I'm not going to put much stock into things.
  20. I think TH is posting more opinion than fact there. He seems to be one who has read a lot into Parra/Bush sharing a day to pitch.
  21. Villanueva is also a flyball pitcher with mediocre stuff so there isn't really any upside there compared to Parra. CV's upside as a starter is probably Dave Bush, that is about the best you can hope for from his skillset. I do agree with you though that if they do decide to send him down stretching him out as a starter would make some sense for depth purposes since we have about a 2 year gap in prospect pitching here.
  22. If you look at his game logs and take a look at the game score rankings you'll see that he was pretty consistently worse last year than in 07/08 so it was more than just an injury. His best games weren't as good and his worst game were worse.
  23. I think it is more they know Parra has huge upside and as a ground ball lefty who Ks a lot he has pretty much the perfect skill set if he can ever get the walks under control again. He didn't have control problems in the minors so they are assuming it won't last. Even with the bad season his career FIP is 4.40 and career xFIP is 4.23. The talent is obviously there, he just needs to put it all together. I doubt very many are just saying he should start because he was a minor league player for the Brewers, they just are looking deeper than just ERA. If he can't throw strikes in spring though I don't see how Macha sends him out there to start the season. He has to get it together in a hurry if he wants a spot.
  24. The worst thing they could do is let go of any of the starters. There is absolutely no depth in AAA unless Capuano stays healthy, these are their 7 guys for the entire season. They need to find a way to keep all of them even if it means doing something strange with the bullpen.
  25. And yet he was the 2nd best starter on the team last year. Suppan is not a good pitcher but he really is nowhere near as bad as people try to make him out to be. However Suppan was not as good in 2009 as he was most of 2008 and all of 2007. In those seasons he was still going 7+ innings 1 out of 3 starts. Last year he almost never made it 7 innings and was struggling to get through the lineup a 3rd time much more than the previous years. If he pitches like last year again this year he should be dropped from the rotation, if he pitches like 2007/2008 he shouldn't be.
