  1. Simply not true. 3 year splits for our starters not including Narveson Suppan - 4.93 ERA Bush - 5.06 ERA Parra - 5.17 ERA Suppan had a pretty good 2007, he was decent until about the last month of 2008 and then he was mediocre to bad most of 2009. In total his first 60 starts or so were pretty good for us(including 20 starts of 7+ innings and around a 4.60 ERA), his last 35 have been pretty bad(including just 4 starts of 7+ innings and an ERA north of 5.). I don't like writing players off after just one season worth of starts. I'll be fine if he doesn't win a job in the rotation to start the year and he obviously was overpaid but the constant over the top comments about how bad he has been as a Brewer can be a bit much at times.
  2. At some point during the season a couple guys will get hurt and all of these guys will pitch a number of games. I don't think it is going to make that big of a difference which ones pitch a few extra. Suppan isn't as bad as people think and I don't trust Narveson as much as some people do, Parra and Bush both have their own warts as well. The more important thing to me is to make sure we keep the depth. If we DFA Narveson or something I'll be really upset, starting him in the bullpen won't bother me.
  3. I don't think there is much difference between Bush, Parra, Narveson or even Suppan to be honest so it doesn't matter much to me. I'm just glad we are going into the season with some depth and I sure hope they don't make the mistake of losing any of these guys. The 2 that don't make the rotation need to find room in the bullpen somehow. Too bad none of them have options left.
  4. I think in the past they let young guys come up early to put fans in the seat more than because they weren't about winning. We brought up most of our prospects a little early during the rebuilding process.
  5. Figured both of these moves would happen, didn't see a way either guy made the team. Nice to see some cuts happening though, season is going to be here before we know it!
  6. Last year was the first year Werth ever broke 425 AB in his career and he is 30 years old. He's also never broken 100 RBI or R before and never had an OPS over .900. Pretty hard to call him a superstar. To this point in his career he isn't as good as Jenkins was, did he count as a super star?
  7. I'm a big fan of Ian Kinsler, Jayson Werth and Shin Soo-Choo. No particular reason for it, I guess some of it comes from fantasy baseball but I didn't own any of them last year.
  8. Sure but guys like Tony Phillips were doing the same back in the 80s when he played basically every position at least a little every year. Flash back to the 60s and guys like Cookie Rojas were doing it. This isn't something new.
  9. I think he needs to study baseball history if he really thinks he is a founding father of being a utility player.
  10. Bill Hall played himself out of positions when we tried to settle on a spot, I don't feel bad for him in any way.
  11. He did manage to turn Delmon Young into Matt Garza though, gotta give him a lot of credit for that.
  12. I get the opposite feeling. I think Suppan and Parra are battling for #5 and it is high unlikely Bush doesn't make the rotation.
  13. I still don't think what Suppan does really matters this spring. Either Bush and Parra take the 4/5 jobs or they don't and it falls back to Suppan. Narveson has to be perfect this spring to win it most likely.
  14. I'd imagine his odds are pretty good considering our other 5th OF options are all pretty weak players. The only strike against him is we are so left handed on the bench.
  15. The year we traded for him Vargas was coming off an ERA/FIP/xFIP of 4.83/4.85/4.64. Davis was coming off of a 4.91/4.38/4.62. They looked relatively comperable. Since the trade Davis has put up around a 4.65 xFIP and FIP and his ERA has historically been about 0.10 better than that so his talent level is probably around a 4.50 ERA. Obviously Davis is the better pitcher but the gap when you consider age and price isn't huge or anything. Vargas was having a good year for us before he strained his back in July. I think so much of the negative opinion of the trade comes down to the fact the players we got ended up injured and didn't play well after the injuries as anything else. That is just part of baseball, hurt guys almost never perform well unless their name is Pujols. See Bush, David last year for an example.
  16. Davis' xFIP, FIP and ERA trends over his career suggest that the ERA for the diamondbacks has been more luck than good, he is still a high 4 ERA pitcher. Now if signing him meant not getting Suppan than that would have been a win for sure even though Suppan was better than Davis in 2007, Davis has been better in 08/09 and would have been cheaper. For all intents and purposes Vargas looked like a pretty comperable starter who was younger and cheaper. Eveland and Krynzel haven't amounted to much and Estrada was having a pretty nice season before the hamstring injury derailed the second half. It might not have been a great trade but it isn't the disaster people like to claim it was either.
  17. Jenkins was a well above average player over his career and was a 3-5 WAR range player before his injuries. I can't think of another OF we've grown that was better that wasn't already on the list. We need Weeks to get healthy and stay a Brewer because our list of 2B is just horrible.
  18. I'd rather they add another wild card than remove it. The original posters idea seems too complicated to be viable. It is going to be hard to get them to shorten the season by a meaningful amount given the statistical nature and history of the game. The playoffs already go late enough that I don't see them adding teams either to be honest. I think we will see them just stick what we have.
  19. Easy enough change to make mid season if Escobar is doing better and seems comfortable.
  20. The media's job is to try to make a story where there isn't one most of the time so I'm not surprised at all they speculated.
  21. I think people underrate just how hard it is to turn around a team that has no major league talent, no prospects, no payroll and a fanbase that just isn't that interested anymore. While Melvin messed up a little with the pitching depth last year he is much better than he is being given credit for here. When he took over I didn't think we'd be at .500 as soon as we were, I didn't think we'd be in the playoffs as soon as we were. We very easily could still be in the state that the Pirates are in but instead we have been a .500 team over the past 5 seasons now and with a little better health from Sheets or a lucky bounce or two somewhere could have easily been in the playoffs 2 of those seasons. Last year was rough, between a rotation that saw 4 of 5 starters hurt and losing Sabathia and Sheets and not getting much in compensation for it and there have been hiccups for sure but he is a very solid GM. I can't really argue for or against where he is placed because I don't know enough about the other GMs but I think he does a better job than most fans on this site like to give him credit for.
  22. I really dislike putting Jack Z 5th, he hasn't proven a thing yet. I still don't think that team is going to be in contention this season.
  23. Gallardo was up around the top 5 when they shut him down. If he had thrown 4-5 more starts like some of those guys ahead of him he'd have ended up a lot higher in the list.
  24. There is certainly a difference between having lasik or switching from contacts to glasses and getting classes to correct site problems that are untreated. I doubt it makes a huge difference but this is a bigger deal than something like lasik.
  25. Because he saw what happened with his brother career and he knows that he has been injury prone so far in his career so could easily not earn more than this. This is a risky move by Arizona but obviously could bring back a huge reward so it is probably the right move to make.
