  1. Cameron was underpaid last year statistically and has been so far this year and Hart is just as slump prone as Cameron, I don't really understand this one. There is no way this will or should happen, Hardy has proven himself at the major league level and you have to let him work his way out of it even if you end up trading him afterwords. This would be one of the worst moves I've seen the Brewers make if they were to do it.
  2. Of course none of our pitchers have actually improved under Kendall and in fact most of them are worse than their career averages over his stint as a Brewer. I have no doubt that he is a good defensive catcher and it helps the team but I just don't really buy that the catcher is helping their progress since they aren't actually progressing.
  3. Jonathon Sanchez, Fausto Carmona, Brandon Backe, Ervin Santana, Eric Stultz, Dontrelle Willis, Matt Harrison, Jorge De La Rosa, Chad Gaudin, Derek Holland, Rich Harden, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Tim Redding, Wandy Rodriguez, Jason Berken, Chris Volstad, Johan Santana, Kyle Daviez, Barry Zito, Tom Gorzelanny, Josh Greer, Casey Janssen, Bill Buckner, Matt Maloney, Brett Anderson, Brett Tomko, Paul Maholm, Kris Medlen, Brian Moehler, Brian Bannister, Ricky Nolasko, David Huff, Tim Wakefield, Ross Ohlendorf, Chien-Ming Wang, Andy Sonnastine, Francisco Liriano, John Lackey, Jeff Weaver, Armando Galarraga, Rich Hill, Jerremy Guthrie, Ross Detwiler. Those are the starters with an ERA over 5.50 over the past 30 days. Just keep that in mind before you freak out over a slump for our known to be mediocre rotation. All of these guys are in the same general range as our slumping pitchers.
  4. A player who walked every time he came up to the plate would by far be the most valuable player in baseball no matter who else was on his team. You don't swing at pitchers pitches just to avoid taking a walk, that is why a guy like Pujols is so good, he doesn't chase at bad pitches just because he doesn't trust his teammates.
  5. Most high K guys, low AVG guys tend to be streaky. Cameron and Hart both tend to wear down so I have no clue why Gerut isn't playing more to see if we can get him hitting the ball.
  6. I'm not really worried about it though we need someone to replace Parra obvoiusly. In general people seem to not realize just how high variance pitcher ERA is during a year, we happen to have had a bunch of bad starts lately and it spiked the ERA. We'll have some good starts eventually and it will push it back down. These are 4.50-5.00 ERA type pitchers so seeing them dip over 5 from time to time is just expected, especially after a bad start.
  7. I still don't get why he seems to think walks aren't valuable or that they somehow get overrated by OPS. I think he just doesn't understand statistics. There is an argument to be made that statistics are situational but the logic he is using is just terrible.
  8. Nope, I meant Braun or Fielder by that. I wouldn't bat them back to back in the first place but oh well, that is just me.
  9. The fact that he already missed time and likely won't play every day are huge advantages for him since no hitter in baseball is close to a real .400 hitter so it will take variance/luck to achieve it and both those factors help.
  10. We don't have an ideal leadoff hitter so nobody is going to really fit that mold, Hart's OBP is about as good as anyone elses so far this year. I also realize we won't do anything weird with the lineup so I won't suggest messing with Braun/Fielder. Hart/Counsell Hardy/Hart/McGehee Fielder Braun Cameron/Hart/Hardy/Gamel Cameron/Hart/Hardy/Gamel Cameron/Hart/Hardy/McGehee Kendall Pitchers Bit of a loose lineup but since we move players around so much that is fine. Hall can slot in just about anywhere vs LH since theoretically we should destroy LHP still even though we haven't been.
  11. It takes a miracle to win a gold glove as LF, maybe if Braun played CF this would make some sense.
  12. Gamel is doing just fine considering his experience level and I've been impressed overall with his defense considering how bad I thought it was going to be. I don't really see a need to send him down.
  13. The flashy diving play is something that you only get a few chances a year to make in the OF unless you like to slide/dive for balls you don't need to. Not saying that Cameron doesn't have as many chances for a flashy play, just that those plays are the ones people remember and they are less common than the type of play where range decides if it is caught or not.
  14. That play Cameron made last night is one that very few CF in baseball get to, I was amazed he managed to catch it. So I'm watching quick play today and the play of the night is Melky Cabrera making a snow cone catch on a ball Cameron probably doesn't even have to dive for. That is the play that sticks in most peoples head, not the one where you showed great range. Looking flashy is how you win gold gloves, not actually having good range.
  15. That shows the number of times he put the first pitch in play, if he swings and misses or fouls it off it doesn't count it.
  16. I looked up last years national TV games and we were right around .500 in the ones I could find. I think this is probably like the fact we don't do well against first time pitchers which isn't true either.
  17. plus/minus had him anywhere between 0 and +10 in the minors at 3B and the BPro write up I saw on him suggested he is an above average defensive 3B as well.
  18. This is actually true, he has a 26% LD% which suggests something like a .380 BABIP. Of course that LD% isn't sustainable either so you can expect some regression but I don't think anyone thinks he will hit .357 all year so I doubt anyone isn't expecting that to come down eventually.
  19. Sure but you don't generally call a guy going 1/4 every day for 3-4 days a slump either. To start June out he went 2/5, 0/2, 1/4, 1/4, 1/4, 1/5 with a couple walks thrown in. Yeah I'd like to see some power in there but hard to get too upset over that and call it a slump, that is just sort of nitpicking at that point.
  20. From April 24th to June 5th he put up a line of .276/.368/.390/.758 and was hitting the ball well pretty consistently. That is 6 weeks and not 2.5. He slumped for the first 2 weeks and he slumped the last week, he has slumped for about 21 games on the season and was hitting well for 34. Liking or not liking Hardy has nothing to do with it, Hart struggled to get on base most of last year which limited his value a lot and then he struggled this year too. Hart doesn't have any bad luck in his stats at all either, Hardy has a pretty clear explanation for at least part of his troubles in his BABIP.
  21. Hardy went 0 for 28 at one point last year and was one of the more valuable SS in baseball on the season. I don't think anyone would say he isn't in a slump right now but the slump is being amplified by a bit of bad luck as well.
  22. It at least partially is because he isn't driving the ball for power at all so he isn't hitting doubles. Part of it is just bad luck though, if you have been watching all the games Hardy has hit a ton of line drives that went for outs.
  23. Branyan hit well for us last year too, he just got hurt. Gwynn is nothing but a BABIP spike. Laynce Nix would be a more fitting comment but we never really gave him a chance to do anything. JJ has never swung at first pitch strikes even before Sveum. I just don't see this being a big issue, the team is taking more walks than last year and striking out about the same, seems more likely that we just happen to have a few guys slumping at the same time than Sveum somehow being to blame.
  24. The primary stats never ever matter, they are just results and don't tell you how the player is really doing. They at best serve as a reason to dig a bit deeper into the peripherals to try to explain a problem. For example a bad BABIP could mean they are popping up a lot or that they are hitting from behind way too much etc. Hardy's average is mostly a fluke right now no matter what his results are. The bigger concern is his power is absent on the year and that is showing up in his peripheral stats. That is what you have to be worried about with him. Parra has walked over 5 hitters per 9 innings, that is a pretty clear indication that something is wrong and he probably should be in the minors to fix it. Hall's bad start is completely supported by his peripherals. Hart is a bit more of an enigma, I don't know what to think about him. Seems like he is trying to change his approach at the plate and it is only partially succeeding. He is walking more but also striking out a ton more. These are things that get thrown around every time a young player struggles though. Do a search on mental approach mlb and you'll find 20+ pages of links to players struggling with their mental approach. These kinds of comments don't mean that Manny Parra will never be a good pitcher because he is mentally weak and wants to "roll up in a ball and cry after every hit". Those are the kinds of comments that are really bothering people.
  25. You don't K 198 of the first 212 IP you pitch without good stuff. It is deceptively good instead of raw power good. Gallardo has 4 pitches with positive value in his career which is not something many pitchers have.
