  1. Gamel is in tonight for what it is worth.
  2. There is a pretty significant difference in the jump in pitches Prior made and the jump in pitches that Parra made. The Brewers have been far from perfect with pitchers though, they abused the heck out of Sheets in his breakout year and then they abused Capuano in his best season to try to get him to 20 wins, starting him on 3 days rest multiple times late in the season. These were both seasons where we had no chance at the post season so really weren't special circumstances at all. Obviously you can never be 100% sure what causes injuries in baseball but both Sheets and Capuano followed with injuries.
  3. I think the problem is he is always behind in the count so he cannot go to the off speed stuff. Parra won't be 'fixed' until he gets his control together. He did throw 67 of 100 pitches for strikes this last start so there is at least a little bit positive about it even if it was mostly negative.
  4. There is no good reason to think Gerut cannot hit righties and there is no good reason to think Hall cannot hit lefties. I cannot believe how quickly people turn on part time players like Gerut, if they struggle for 5 AB suddenly they are useless.
  5. A #2 pitcher in baseball has around a 4 ERA, Parra had a 4.39 ERA and a better track record in the minors, I don't see how it was a leap. Anyway it is too early to judge any of our pitchers, I would think people have learned that over the past few years by now. Last year at this time we were crying for Bush to be DFA'd, three years ago at this time Capuano was our ace before faltering in the second half. Parra could easily go on a run and end up with an ERA down around 4 still or he could blow up even more and be in the minors by the end of the year, it is just too early to tell.
  6. I have to disagree with this one. Gerut or Cattalanotto is our best LH bat off the bench at this point, Gamel isn't proven enough.
  7. Against RHP Bill Hall is the 4th best player on the team at 3B behind Counsell, McGehee and Gamel. He should never see the light of day against RHP.
  8. To be fair Gamel's defense is bad in a different way than Braun's was. Braun made a lot of errors and had absolutely no range. Gamel seems to be a real 3B who just makes a lot of errors as well. Gamel seems to have some hope of becoming at least adequate (think like Aramis Ramirez when he came up). Braun was historically bad.
  9. I think hitting vs pitching for an individual matchup is probably at best 60% pitching, 40% hitting and then defense impacts a significant portion of the outcome for pitching so in the end it probably ends up somewhere under 50% The difference is a pitcher impacts every AB but a hitter only impacts 1 out of 9. A lineup of 9 Pujols is going to kill any pitcher on a regular basis, doesn't matter how good they are. A dominant start by a pitcher usually ends up in a .600 WPA or less though, a pitchers impact on a game is pretty much never more than 60% of a win and then only if he pitches a completely dominant game. Your offense, your defense and their offense just plays too large of a role. On average I'd say a pitcher is responsible for less than 40% of a win and 25% for a normal start is probably pretty accurate.
  10. His defense is probably about the same as Hart's only he can throw runners out with his arm as well. I don't know if it is poor arm strength or just poor accuracy but Hart is pretty terrible at holding runners or throwing them out.
  11. For me the tie breaker was just defense. Kemp has been better defensively than Upton or Braun and Beltran has missed time so Kemp takes the tie breaker. Ibanez and Cameron make my ballot because of how great they have been this year and that they haven't been terrible in their career. I looked at this years stats and then used career stats as a tie breaker and Ibanez was so far ahead of others this year that he made it, same with Nelson Cruz.
  12. We were at a neighborhood party the other day and I saw some gray haired guy with an Affliction shirt on and I just had to point it out to my wife and we both had a good laugh at how utterly ridiculous it looked it. On some young guy maybe it wouldn't be so bad since we would seem just old and old people aren't supposed to understand why young people wear such goofy clothes but to see it on someones grandpa was just really strange.
  13. I'll preface my voting to say that recent career is a big part of my vote though they have to be doing well this year as well. That is why I'd take Pujols over Gonzalez as an example. AL C: Mauer - 1B: Youkilis - much better defensively than Morneau 2B: Kinsler SS: Jeter - feels dirty picking him but he has been close to as good as Bartlett and has a better track record. 3B: Longoria OF: Crawford OF: Cruz - makes me feel sick to add him but he is playing gold glove defense and hitting OF: Suzuki SP: Halladay - Greinke is acceptable too of course. RP: Nathan Bay is a hack in the OF still so he does not make my list, defense does matter afterall. NL C: McCann - Hard to pick someone who missed so much time but he is more valuable than any other C in the NL so far on the year even with the time off. 1B: Pujols 2B: Utley SS: Hanley 3B: Zimmerman - Don't have an issue with picking Wright either OF: Ibañez OF: Cameron OF: Kemp SP: Lincecum RP: Broxton Upton, Braun, Pence and Beltran are all near misses in the OF, just too many good choices. For the Kemp vs Upton comparison the biggest differences are Kemp has done it longer and Kemp is a gold glove caliber defensive player and Upton is just an ok one.
  14. BPro made a pretty good comment about this entire deal and that was that he was valued in the trade as if he were poor defensively instead of a gold glove CF. If people really bought into him being a plus defender in CF it would have taken more to get him. They said that this could be a turning point in the industry. They also mentioned that Dan Fox is working with the Pirates which I guess points to why they properly valuated his defense.
  15. I'd rather just keep starting Parra than sign Glavine personally. I think the odds of Parra turning things around and being a decent pitcher the rest of the season are higher than Glavine coming back and being decent.
  16. It is certainly too small a sample to matter, just so you know though Parra had an ERA of 4.25 last August so you are really talking about a 3 month sample here in the first place and his ERA was 4.57 through 8 starts this season so you are really talking about 1 month and 3 starts of which he pitched 30 terrible innings. Even with the poor start to the year his peripherals are slightly better than Suppan's on the year, the results obviously aren't because of that last horrible start. So while you can be disappointed with him if you are going to break it down into samples and try to include last year being a disappointment you are probably really only disappointed with 1.5 months of Parra. If you are breaking it down by seasons obviously last year wasn't a disappointment so you shouldn't add an again.
  17. Glavine could easily be the 7th best SP on the team so I'm not big on signing him. I wouldn't go to a game just to see him either. I won't be mad if you don't send that opinion to Attanasio though~.
  18. Looking at the standings on ESPN the Brewers have the toughest SOS in all of baseball so far on the season with a .512. Their RPI is the 2nd best in baseball. The Cubs are 2nd in SOS. Reds are 5th and Cardinals are 14th.
  19. I think Palmeiro pretty much proved how terrible the gold glove voting is when he won one after only 28 games at 1B and the rest as a DH, Jeter as well for a whole different reason of having no range and winning one because he is flashy. In McLouth's case it was probably mostly because the NL didn't have very many full time CF last season and they give almost all OF gold gloves to a CF. Though he is a bit flashy as well, he gets weak reads on balls and doesn't have as much range as some CF but he made a lot of tumbling impressive looking plays and that is what gets you votes.
  20. Good bullpen and one the best defenses in the NL so far on the season is pretty much the story. Adequate SP and adequate hitting.
  21. If Votto doesn't count than Bruce doesn't, they have almost the same number of PA~.
  22. McClung's xFIP is 5.10 and he has walked just about the same amount as Parra on the year. Only difference between the two is in LOB% which is at least partially luck though not fully I'd imagine.
  23. At this point I doubt he is better than Suppan so I'm less than excited about the prospect of signing him. I guess it couldn't hurt if we don't give him much and can cut bait early.
  24. Parra's start last night was just kind of strange all around. He threw 63% of his pitches for strikes which is great, best we've seen this year from him most likely. He let 11 runners on base and 8 of them scored for a 27% LOB, that is really hard to do and is a large part of what has messed up that season long LOB%. 6 of his 11 hits allowed were groundball hits including 3 of them infield hits, so he gave up 11 groundballs and less than half of them went for outs which is pretty strange in general. He also had 2 wild pitches scoring runs both balls that hit the ground directly in front of Kendall which is the design of that pitch, but both bounced into his squared up body and bounced off of him at an odd angle scoring the runs. The HR hit by Uggla was on a decent enough pitch and then Parra gave a meatball changeup to Ross for the grandslam which was clearly just a bad pitch. There was a combination of just downright bad luck, mediocre pitching(2 BB, a number of line drives, some wildness overall) and one really terrible pitch. Like I said earlier, that game by itself wouldn't bother me if he didn't have the rest of the season full of bad starts already.
  25. Hardy, Fielder, Braun and Gallardo have all come up and become some of the better players in the NL. Hart is certainly serviceable. That is a lot of 'gold' over the past few seasons, not too many teams can compare with that from home grown talent over the past few seasons.
