  1. It isn't support for Manny Parra, I could care less about him over any of our other pitchers. Just like I spoke up in Suppan's defense when people were going crazy over his bad start. Just like I spoke up in Bush's defense when he was having a bad stretch that was almost pure luck. Manny Parra is our 2nd or 3rd best starting pitcher, I just don't get what frustrates people except them reading a bunch of things into every single walk or hit he gives up.
  2. Not even close for me, in fact almost every pitcher we had between 1990 and 2000 frustrated me more than Parra. Suppan and Looper both frustrate me more so far this season as well. Most of our bullpen frustrated me more last year than Parra this year. I guess I don't get the Parra hate. He has a tough AB against Pujols and then gets pinched against Molina and then gets the next guy out, what is so frustrating about that.
  3. Gameday shows Parra either getting slightly squeezed or at the very least not missing by much.
  4. I'd use something like game score to track how good starts are. You can go 6 IP, pitch terribly and only give up 1 run. I also have a problem with any stat that suggests 9 IP with 4 ER is worse than 6 IP and 3 ER or that 6 IP and 3 ER is better than 5.2 IP and 0 ER.

  7. It could be intentional, there is a lot of bad blood between those two teams.
  8. You mean if he stayed healthy. Every time we started him on a regular basis he got hurt, that has been the story of his career. Maybe as a 1B/DH he can stay healthy, who knows.
  9. I doubt it would make a difference. Bush had his near no hitter with Rivera catching as an example, the whole C calls a good game thing is overblown. May 28th, 2008 we won 1-0 against the Braves in a game where Suppan went 8 IP with 0 R. Aug 1st, 2008 we won 9-0 against the Braves in a game where Suppan went 7 IP with 0 R. Sept 25th, 2007 he went 8 IP, 1 R April 30th, 2007 he went 9 IP, 1 R April 24th, 2007 he went 8 IP, 0 R. So while yeah Suppan doesn't have many chances at a 1-0 game he is in the running for it a couple times a year.
  10. Well if you expect suppan to pitch like he has over the past 8 starts or whatever you are headed for a let down~. His body of work on the entire season is roughly what I expect out of him on the year. He is going to have patches where he is terrible though. He is the Jason Kendall of pitchers, when things are going right for him he can put up effective stats but if balls don't bounce his way he gives you a month of terrible stats.
  11. But who cares about the bunt, the important part is we won and the Cubs just blew a 4 run lead in the 9th against the Astros.
  12. That is why major league players get bunts down almost 100% of the time on the first pitch and why managers generally keep the bunt on with 2 strikes since the odds of striking out are so astronomically low... oh yeah, they don't get them down anywhere near that amount. It isn't nearly as simple as you are making it out to be.
  13. That is what 90% of young pitchers do so there is nothing at all abnormal about it, /shrug. That is what learning how to pitch at the big league level is all about, Parra isn't unique and 'soft', he's just inexperienced and normal.
  14. I didn't say it wasn't a bunting situation, I said it is a marginal gain so you need to execute it at a high rate. In a situation like that you have something like a 10% chance to fail to get a runner to 3rd with the bunt, you are giving up about 25% chance to get on base, you are giving up something like 20% chance to score a run, you are giving up an out. You are saving something like a 15% of a double play. Those numbers are extremely arguable but the bunt isn't a no brainer. Kendall failed his first attempt at the bunt, it happens. It is nowhere near as easy as you make it sound. The 2nd strike came with a huge gap in the IF as one guy was covering 2B for a pickoff play so he took his shot at an RBI single instead of the bunt. At that point he swings at a terrible pitch that he has no hope of hitting and strikes out. Out of that sequence the biggest issue is the swinging at a horrible pitch in my opinion.
  15. I think you need to watch the playoffs with a more critical eye if you really believe this, especially when the Yankees or Red Sox are in it. Bunting in that situation is only a marginal move to begin with but yeah if you are going to go with the bunt you need to execute it at a high rate. The big problem with that inning was Kendall swinging at a ball that he had no chance of hitting to strike out more than anything.
  16. kudos to Macha on the bullpen usage again tonight. Yost would have left DiFelice in to face the lefty and that just isn't a good matchup vs a Lefty with that kind of power in a 1 run game.
  17. Yeah I tend to agree brewerfan82. McGehee pretty much proves the point that we don't need another RH off the bench, he isn't getting enough playing time as it is. Replacing him with a different RH would be viable though.
  18. Brewers are now 5th best in the NL in BB/G and 5th best in the NL in R/G. I'd say it wasn't time to question Bill Castro just yet. I don't think we stay in the top 5 all year though to be honest.
  19. Walking Bonds was probably the wrong move most of the time as well, though to be fair his 'peak' years blow Pujols out of the water.
  20. The Pirates aren't anywhere near competing for the playoffs, still 3-4 years off though they have a future now unlike in past seasons. The AL west, AL central and NL west are all very weak divisions, the other 3 divisions are very strong and winning playoff spots in them will be tough.
  21. Nelson is not a major league starting player, he might be a bench level player vs righties preferably if he can be hidden as a DH. I don't have a huge issue at all with them sending him down. When you aren't a good baserunner, he doesn't hit for high average, he is pretty good at taking walks, he doesn't have a lot of power. That is a very vanilla skillset. It took him 2 partial seasons and 2 full seasons in AAA before he finally had a productive season in his 5th time in the league. I'm not going to lose much sleep over them moving to someone else after 21 AB. Hopefully he goes down to AAA, rakes and can help somewhat later in the year.
  22. He was mentally fine for 22 starts in the middle of the season last year then I guess. None of his stats really suggest he somehow falls apart with runners on or anything, in fact for his career he has been at his worst with bases empty and at his best with RISP. His biggest issue is a lack of control early in games and not being able to put guys away the 3rd time through the order. This is the same problem that like 90% of young pitchers have. Just seems like something that fans have latched onto and are using to explain every bad pitch he makes. Kind of like the fact Bush gave up a few big innings late in games back in early 2007 means he always falls apart late in games even though nothing about his stats suggest it is true. People get an idea in their head and then when they watch a player they aren't seeing them through unbiased eyes.
  23. I would hope he would let the guys run in good situations, baserunning can give a couple extra wins a year if you are good at it.
  24. In general I don't like the fans at miller park. Way too quick to boo and I find it distasteful. I didn't like that they were booing Looper last night after the 1st inning much either.
  25. I think the signing of Catalanotto made it so losing Nelson wouldn't be a big deal to the team. He can serve the exact same function and is on a minor league contract.
