  1. Coffey was better than his numbers suggest in 2007 with a 4.04 xFIP to go with that 5.82 ERA. He has a somewhat decent but not spectacular track record. I don't know what happened with Kolb in 2003 but he had never pitched like that before and he never pitched like that again.
  2. I would rather have Gamel PH for me than Mike Lamb.
  3. And if history has proven anything it is that it isn't very reliable when judging new parks. They almost always play differently than the team expected them to. It is just way too early to judge this stuff yet, let them play into the summer at least to see how things are going and then see how demolishing the old stadium changes things.
  4. I wouldn't try to judge a stadium with so little data.
  5. They are about the same as the Brewers imo, a little bit over .500. They have a nice young rotation but combine it with probably the worst defensive team in baseball and almost the entire rotation has major injury questions. The bullpen is pretty shaky as well. Will be a team with a lot of ups and downs but I expect something like 83 or 84 wins.
  6. Looper, Parra and Gallardo are all pretty good with the bat. So we have lost a lot of crappy hitting pitchers over the last years and gained good hitting ones.
  7. I'm sure Lamb would have won 6 games for us alone, sorry but Lamb just isn't a good player anymore and even though he is a gritty old veteran that doesn't change how he would do in PH situations. Jenkins was terrible last year for the phillies, Lamb was terrible for the twins, being a veteran doesn't magically make them good bench players. The sample size you are using is way too small to try to give a good old "I told you so" at this point. Sure we could have say Gross(.458 OPS) or Kapler(.544 OPS) instead, that would make things better I'm sure! The reason Macha doesn't have many options is because our bench is significantly weaker at hitting than our starters and he won't PH for Kendall. So he just PHs for the pitcher pretty much and that is it.
  8. To be fair to Kendall 2 of those 8 were bad calls, he should be at 3 caught and 7 SB. I agree that it is too much to hoep for a repeat of 42% though, I don't think it was just some fluke. He was throwing perfect strikes almost every time last year.
  9. I still think the best game he pitched was opening day~. He was getting ahead of people and hitting his spots, just when he got in trouble that day they got hits instead of outs. The park helped him out quite a bit today.
  10. I didn't applaud the Coffey move but leaving in your pitcher to bunt a runner over is a bit different than letting your pitcher lead off when he is nearing his pitch limit and will likely be taken out the next inning the first time someone gets on base. I'm dubious about bringing Suppan out to start the 7th in the first place but when you add in the fact he was leading off the inning at bat it becomes a 100% complete no brainer to replace him.
  11. I'm in the minority but the bullpen doesn't really worry me once Hoffman is back. I trust Hoffman, Coffey, Stetter and Villanueva pretty much. I like DiFelice a lot as well. McClung and Julio worry me but not very many teams have bullpens that I trust top to bottom. Macha bungled the Suppan AB and starting in the 7th inning, I'll give him a little bit of a mulligan since he is new to the NL but he better learn fast~.
  12. A short term switch until Hardy warms up would not bother me, I'd do Hardy batting 6th and Cameron 5th just so we don't have 3 black holes in the lineup in a row (Braun, Fielder, Hardy).
  13. That is just huge. Good job Weeks. So since Coffey bunted are they gonna try to let him finish it out? That is a lot of innings he has thrown so far this year.
  14. Last year we had 913 PA with RISP and less than 2 outs. We scored 319 runs or 1 run per 2.86 PA. The Mets had 956 PA with RISP and less than 2 outs. They scored 369 runs or 1 per 2.59 PA. So looks like they were a bit better than us at it last year. Looking at the other stats listed above it looks like we probably scored more runs when we did come through but they came through a lot more often for at least 1 run. Seems like it would make sense given how low our OBP is and how SLG heavy the team is in general. We certainly could use more OBP, I won't disagree.
  15. Good teams aren't perfect is pretty much what is missing here and I wasn't directing my post at anyone in particular. Good teams do this and that just gets thrown around a lot whenever anything goes wrong. So if we manage to get through this inning with the lead do you think CV is 'closer' tonight? I sure hope it isn't Julio.
  16. I can't help but think this ends up as a grand slam or 3 run double. Coffey has been terrific this year so far but I still really worry when he is facing good lefties.
  17. He got a groundball from Reyes, most of the time that is an out but Reyes is just too fast. He made a decent pitch to Murphy, he just got a single out of it. I don't have much of an issue with that outing by Stetter.
  18. I don't think I've ever heard Ron Santo get a full sentence out without falling over his words and he has kept a job for a long time now. Maybe Augustine should just become a cheerleader for his own team.
  19. I don't care what the results are, leaving Suppan in to bat for himself to lead off this inning is a mistake. The last thing you want is Suppan facing the top of that lineup for a 4th time in the same day. If either of the first 2 guys gets on and Suppan faces Reyes I will explode~.
  20. Vina only had a line that good 1 time for the Brewers and had 3 years of sub .700 OPS. Belliard only put up a line that good one time. I think you are overestimating the average 2B a bit. Very few 2B have an OPS of .800, last year NL 2B put up a .746 OPS overall.
  21. I think we win today in a battle of the middle relief, DiFelice is the unsung hero with 2-3 strong innings.
  22. We will finish this season over .500, so we won't be bad this year. Average to above average rotation, average to above average bullpen, above average offense, average to above average defense. Same team as last year minus one ace which means 84-85 wins instead of 90(we had a bit of luck to reach 90 last year so we really were more of an 88 win team probably).
  23. I think I'd almost rather go 3-159 than like 61-101. At least the one would be record setting and logic defying.
