  1. Hardens velocity was down 2 MPH in his last start so there is some conjecture that he might not be 100%.
  2. Football players should stop using helmets too, the game was meant to be played without them. Sometimes a change to the game is for the better.
  3. I think it is a lost year from the perspective that there is no way we can rely on him as the starting CF for 2010. I was hoping that we could do that next year with maybe a marginal player brought in as a backup. The injuries probably mean we have to sign a 1 year player in CF and re-evaluate things in 2011.
  4. Soup vs Marshall is a close one, Marshall is a better pitcher but he is LH and even if Braun is out we still kill lefties.
  5. Pretty sure the no name is going to be Randy Wells. http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=290971
  6. Weeks is really confusing me at this point. His AVG is up which is good, but his BB is down so his OBP is actually terrible this year which is bad. His defense has much improved which is good. His ISO is also up which is good but he has 1 SB and 2 CS which is bad. It is like bizarro Weeks came to the team this year. Every strength he had in the past is gone to the point that it is a weakness now and all of his weaknesses have gone to average level.
  7. I want our pitchers to go 6 and then if the 7th inning starts out well finish 7. I don't believe an expectation of 7 innings is realistic anymore. Hitters just work the count too much and the lineups are too stacked to just lob it in there and let them hit it like in the past.
  8. Here is some data on scooping throws.... http://home.comcast.net/~briankaat/1bscoop.htm Here is another one http://spreadsheets.googl...=p4mB-r5bxU8gIS5QTxMVfDw Here is some more http://www.fangraphs.com/...hp/first-basemen-scoops/ The first 2 are only through 2007 but Fielder had come out above average at scooping throws in both of those studies. The last one is more recent but doesn't include an entire list, just worst and best. Fielder isn't on the worst list. I personally think he is below average mostly because he is short, but he doesn't stand out to me as a complete hack at scooping throws. He just gets a lot of blame from the fans on bad throws that are hard plays. A good example is how people jumped on Fielder after the terrible throw by Hall that led to a tie game earlier in the season. The throw was in the dirt and way offline and when Fielder doesn't make a great play on it he gets blamed for it even though the fault is 100% Hall's. Bad fielders are rarely as bad as the fans think and good ones are rarely as good as they think, your mind tends to categorize the in between plays that are made or missed based on the fielders reputation.
  9. Well I could use the same one you are and just watch games and he isn't anywhere near as bad as people make him out to be with that one. I think people got spoiled from watching Pujols and Lee so much in our division, both are gold glove caliber 1B. For UZR/150 Mike Jacobs was the worst in baseball last year, Loney and LaRoche were right around Fielder. Using plus/minus again Jacobs was much worse and Giambi and Delgado were worse. Fielder is a poor defensive 1B but not out of the ordinary poor. Gamel struggles to play 3 games in a row without an error, it isn't the same ballpark. I have watched Giambi field 1B and he is worse than Fielder without a doubt in my mind, Jacobs is worse as well.
  10. This isn't anywhere close to true. Gamel has been historically bad at 3B, Fielder isn't even the worst 1B in baseball currently. I'd take the under on a .750 OPS from Jenkins even in a platoon role at this point.
  11. In 2007 we signed a SP coming off of an NLCS MVP(unfortunately~). In 2008 we signed the best or second best FA CF on the market. In 2009 we signed the second best closer on the market. Not sure I buy the idea that no real FAs will sign for the Brewers.
  12. We would have missed the playoffs if it had been Cain and his 4 ERA(what we could expect out of him in miller park most likely) wouldn't be a huge upgrade this year though it would be an upgrade. I just don't think we can assume there were long term players available. As for the players we gave up, I don't expect Brantley to be much of a major league player. Guys with negative power don't get walked a lot in the majors so I just don't see his OBP staying high. His upside to me is maybe Ryan Theriot style numbers which I'd take but aren't great. LaPorta is more of a wild card because if he can get his defense improved enough that he can at least play 1B his value goes up but if he falls into a pure DH mode then he wasn't ever going to be incredibly valuable to us.
  13. But again you are assuming this player was available. I guess we could have gone for Harden instead but given the injury history I don't like the idea of that. No other pitcher was traded during the off season including Peavy who they shopped hardcore. Teams don't trade pitchers with 2+ years of a contract left in the middle of the season very often, especially not front line starters. Nobody would have objected to saying getting Halladay instead of Sabathia and having him for an additional 2 years, but the price to get that probably would have been at least Gamel or Escobar added to the deal and maybe both. Pitching like that is at a huge premium.
  14. The samples are too small to make any conclusions about the bench at all. If you were worried about the bench going into the year you still should be worried, if you thought the bench was fine going into the season then nothing in those statlines suggest it isn't fine. A random 20 or fewer AB just doesn't mean anything.
  15. I would put money on Nelson outproducing Jenkins over 200 PAs.
  16. DiFelice should be in a longer role so when a starter gets hurt he can step in and start. Coffey should be the primary setup guy. Villanueva 'proved' last year that he was capable of performing late in games so him 'proving' he isn't capable this year at best offsets that.
  17. Braun swung at a bad pitch to strike out, Cameron struck out looking on a marginal pitch but one you have to swing at. Fielder just swung through a pitch. Garland is locating decently but he is never really 'dealing'. He doesn't have good enough stuff to deal~.
  18. He is out of the lineup today.
  19. My only regret with the entire trade was that the Yankees signed Teix so we didn't get a good draft pick. That draft pick in my opinion is worth as much as Brantley or maybe even more.
  20. We will have another rotten stretch before the all star break that sees more of them and then probably one more late in the season that sees more of them.
  21. Sure, but to be fair if Sheets elbow lasts another month and our offense doesn't go so darn cold in September this team easily could have gone to the world series. Sabathia, Sheets, Gallardo, Bush is a rotation that in my mind defeats the Phillies if they are all healthy and the offense is clicking. We had a very legit shot at winning the world series last year because of the trade.
  22. If we had not traded for CC last year I would not consider Brantley a top 5 prospect at this point. Escobar, LaPorta, Gamel, Jeffress, Lawrie and Salome are probably above him. Cain, Lucroy and Green were on the same level as him. Yeah losing LaPorta stinks but I think he is a future DH or at best a 1B, Gamel is most likely our future 1B at this point. Simply a case of a blocked player. I am very glad we made the trade and got the playoff out of the way. I just wish the team hadn't tanked september so we went into the playoffs so cold, last years team was as good as the Phillies and they won the world series, just a matter of going cold at the wrong time.
  23. A 5.88 ERA is still pretty worrisome so not sure I'd say it is over and done with. What I'm interested in seeing is what happens the next time we get an ump with a small strike zone with Suppan on the mound, can he adjust to it or does being forced to come into the zone mean a terrible start every time for him.
  24. I also predicted 83 wins for 07 and 90 wins for 08 for what it is worth! (I got the totals right but my monthly projections were not impressive in any way during those seasons~) But yeah I predict around .500 for May, it is a really tough schedule and I have to assume we have easier months ahead of us.
