  1. Of course HR/RBI are just two stats. Lee doesn't get on as much as Manny and he's probably even worse in the field. Guys like Lee or Ibanez are always overpriced because HR/RBI are the sexy stats.
  2. I would normally agree with you but that could be the weakest division in baseball so I just can't get too upset about them going for it. Some team will luck into 85 wins I'm sure but there isn't a single team in the division with 85 win talent.
  3. That division is weak so I guess it makes some sense to just see what happens.
  4. Brewers have one of the more set teams in baseball so there aren't that many big stories. C- Macha said Kendall would get more rest this year to keep him fresh 1B - Fielder lost weight in the offseason, not sure who the backup is, I guess Lamb? 2B - Escobar is learning 2B just in case something happens SS - Hardy is the starter, Escobar is a solid backup in case of injury 3B - Hall has starting job but is slightly injured right now as is Gamel who might win a job mid season. LF - Braun has this covered, only concern with him would come from WBC. CF - Cameron wasn't traded which ha some controversy to it since he was one of our few movable parts in the offseason RF - Hart is the man, hopefully he starts taking walks again 4th OF - This is up in the air with Duffy taking the lead since Gwynn is hurt and Nixon is old Rotation - This is pretty set, just a matter of how many innings each guy can go. McClung has the inside track on 6th starter, not sure who 7th is. Bullpen - Lot of questions in bullpen, we have too many guys who should make the team and that is a good thing. Players with options will probably get screwed in here somewhere and end up in the minors behind worse pitchers. Players who are gone - Sheets, Sabathia, Torres(retired), Mota, Turnbow, Shouse, Dillon, Kapler, Players who are new - McGehee, Looper, Julio, Coffey, Hoffman, Swindle, Wright, Lamb
  5. You want to watch Hart to see if he is swinging at junk and Weeks to see if he is grounding out a lot and/or popping out a lot. Weeks always pops out too much which hurts his AVG as much as the Ks do but when he is going bad he also hits too many weak grounders in general. Those two things combine to leave him with a really low LD%. Those are things pretty common with hitters not making solid contact in general but when he is hitting well he struggles with those a lot less.
  6. I don't think they even need to be high strikeout guys. Johnny Estarda was a free swinger, he hacked at anything they threw up there. He didn't really K much.
  7. Brian Wilson - Closer (below average closer) Bob Howry - Setup (decent setup guy coming off bad year) Jeremy Affeldt - lefty (decent pitcher, not just a LOOGY) bunch of mediocre guys - middle relief. They do have some upside guys in this MR group but it is always so hard to know what to expect out of younger guys in the bullpen so can't really comment.
  8. I pretty strongly disagree with this. I'd take Gallardo over Sanchez any day of the week at this point and most days I'd take him over RJ too. I'd take Parra over Sanchez as well. I'd take every single pitcher on our team over Zito. Not to mention we have a huge edge on offense at this point. Sorry but saying Sanchez has proven more than Gallardo at this point is just being a pessimist. Sanchez can't throw strikes and has a career ERA over 5 in a weak hitting division in a pitchers park. Gallardo has a sub 3 ERA outside of one start in Coors. Gallardo would most likely be the Giants #2 SP, Parra would be their #3 or #4. Bush/Looper would be their #4 most likely. Suppan would be a #5. Why you think we are unproven as a rotation yet you think Sanchez is better than Gallardo is just baffling to me. Lincecum is a stud. Cain is an ok #2 (4.17 career ERA on the road, that park holds in a lot of HRs for him every year) Johnson is a good #3 but could break down at any time. Zito and Sanchez could fall in as an acceptable #4 but the last few years both of these guys wouldn't make our rotation given their actual results.
  9. I just hope by 30/30 you don't mean 30 walks and 30 SB for Hart. Nice to see him take a BB today. --------------------------------- Here's a link to phxmilwfan's pictures: 2009-02-25 Athletics at Brewers... Supplemental picture thread --1992 ---------------------------------
  10. If you look at the fan scouting site done by Tango you can see that fans agree he has been slipping defensively. http://www.tangotiger.net/scouting/ 2008 - 48 2007 - 49 2006 - 55 He still scores ok on arm strength and accuracy and is slightly above average speed wise but he has lead hands and gets bad jumps on balls.
  11. I disagree, a lineup comprised completely of all star level RH power hitters would score a ton of runs. They don't need to compliment each other at all. The Yankees last year got decimated by injuries and had a weak rotation to begin with. Four years ago sure, very few people who have watched Abreu in the last 3 years think he is good defensively.
  12. True but most people think Cameron is still good defensively and most people think Abreu is terrible in the field at this point. When metrics and scouts both agree you usually have a pretty sure thing.
  13. Cameron isn't a gold glove CF, Hart is barely above average in RF and Abreu probably is only like 10 runs below average in the OF. Last year seems like more of an outlier than anything. I still don't think the Cameron signing was a mistake.
  14. Oops yeah i totally misread minor league as spring training for some reason. Sorry about that. I don't know if they will show minor league games or not.
  15. Oddly enough the Brewers probably rated better than any other team on the team health reports at baseballprospectus. We have most likely the safest team in baseball from an injury standpoint. Which means you are probably correct and a bunch will get hurt!
  16. They are showing two minor league games tomorrow so I'm guessing they do! They had a discussion on PECOTA tonight. Wasn't really surprised by their opinions but it was nice to see them at least mention the saber side of things.
  17. Neither does Brian Roberts or ARod and we got multi page threads about them too. No reason to be so cranky, obviously people found it interesting including the early video of Prince when he was a kid.
  18. Maybe they know that Bush has historically pitched better at home than on the road so want to start him out at home. I still don't think it really matters much except for anyone who gets a start skipped completely and that probably isn't a bad thing for Gallardo or Parra given their innings last year. As long as he doesn't say skip Bush to let Suppan get an extra start or something I don't have much of a problem with it.
  19. Moving Weeks to a new position and starting someone who has only one full season under his belt at age 31, is slipping defensively and doesn't hit that great outside of arizona probably is a 1-2 win downgrade over what we have now. Now signing Abreu and Edmonds and platooning Hart could have worked out, but are you absolutely sure Abreu and Edmonds would have wanted to play here and that we would have won the bidding on them? What happens when Edmonds gets hurt? Those two are pretty close in price to just keeping Cameron and they come with more uncertainty and much worse defense(Edmonds has been below average statistically 2 years in a row now)
  20. There was no full time CF out there. Signing an Abreu and moving Hart to CF would have been an absolute disaster given our rotation and infield defense.
  21. Outside of that one terrible game in Coors, Gallardo has a career 2.65 ERA and 1.17 WHIP. I don't see how he can improve and not dominate.
  22. The Twins started Livan Hernandez on opening day last year. Pretty sure he was their worst SP going into the season.
  23. I've never seen Dillard pitch, I just think between him having an option and the fact we brought in so many other RH guys from outside makes it unlikely that Dillard is their plan for 2009.
  24. I'd be shocked if Dillard makes the team so yeah I'd call him a dark horse. I think his odds are probably the lowest of anyone mentioned.
  25. That is assuming they skip anyone. Maybe they just go with a pure 5 man and give guys extra days off.
