  1. I wanted Swindle personally.
  2. Bush has been so much better at home(3.75 career ERA at miller park) than on the road for us that I'd be fine with him starting the home opener.
  3. While I don't think McGehee is really a starter I dont' think he ever had a shot at beating out Aramis for playing time on the Cubs. He is a plus defensive 3B who can get on base but doesn't have enough pop. You could do much worse for a backup than that. Julio has proven he isn't a good pitcher, I'd much rather take a chance on DeFelice working out than Julio who we know won't be good.
  4. Cameron is one of the 5 best CF in the NL, Duffy has struggled to make a team. I'm guessing the drop down in production is bigger than you are suggesting. The only reason to trade Cameron was to get money for a pitcher and now that we signed Looper there really isn't a spot to stick a pitcher.
  5. To be fair the graphic did show that they scored 1.0 R/G more with Mauer in the lineup than without him.
  6. Weeks certainly pops out too much which is going to suppress his BABIP some, I'll give you that much with him.
  7. LD% is one of the most dubious stats in baseball to be honest, it is every bit as variable as BABIP and doesn't show any strong correlation year to year. So a trend in LD% is more or less meaningless.
  8. This thread really bothered me but then I read what Macha actually said and it is no big deal. Against certain matchups Kendall might leadoff, that is much different than Kendall is our new leadoff hitter.
  9. Also keep in mind a bad approach at the plate doesn't just mean strike outs. Hart has a lot of terrible ABs where he makes contact with a ball out of the strike zone and hits the ball weakly for an out. Estarda had a terrible approach at the plate yet he rarely struck out.
  10. Well yeah if you specifically look at the one situation where strike outs are at their worst it looks like they matter a lot, though in some of those situations a strike out is still better than some other outs. The point is those situations are a rarity and there are situations where a normal out is worse than a strike out. If you look at a full season of data strike outs are not a big deal compared to any other out. The reason strike outs are bad is because they are outs, it has very little to do with what type of outs they are and a lot to do with outs being a bad result. The Brewers approach at the plate is bad in general, I don't disagree with that. Its frustrating to see a pitcher struggle with his command and then Hart comes up and swings at the first pitch weakly grounding out. Strike outs are just a part of that bad approach. Improving the approach would increase our BB, OBP and SLG which are much more important than increasing AVG or decreasing Ks though. Which was my initial points, AVG/K are just not that important compared to other stats.
  11. I think you are misunderstanding the argument Patrick. Strike outs are bad because they are outs, but if you look at a players OBP, SLG, ISO, whatever other stat you like those things dwarf strike outs and AVG in importance. If every Brewer cut their strike out rate in half without losing any power it would help the team immensely. It would translate into higher OBP and higher SLG as they make fewer outs. When people say 100 K = 1 Run they are comparing 100 K vs 100 Other outs = 1 Run, not 100 K vs 100 balls in play. A .400 OBP, .400 SLG player who strikes out 20 times a year just isn't that much more valuable than a .400 OBP, .400 SLG player who strikes out 200 times. The difference is going to be miniscule. OBP and SLG already incorporate the most important part of stike outs into them, the fact that they are outs.
  12. Who cares how many RBI he has, its a mostly useless stat in the first place made even more useless as a leadoff hitter in the NL.
  13. I don't think he was trying to say that Weeks is a better player, just that he catches too much grief. He is a better hitter than most 2B at his age, even if he isn't as good a hitter as we might have hoped. People just dwell on AVG and Ks which aren't really all that important in the big picture and ignore the good parts.
  14. They had a one month hot streak that almost pushed them into the playoffs, that can happen with almost any team in baseball. They still do not have any pitching. From August 7th to Sept 11th they were 26-8. A large part of the hot streak was how insane Wigginton was during that stretch. 102 AB, .333/.364/.716/1.080. The Astros are most likely the 5th best team in the NL Central unless they sign some real pitching. Moehler, Hampton, Capellan, Backe and Ortiz are not going to cut it filling out the 3-5 spots.
  15. I doubt he could get J-Lo out as a pitcher at this point either.
  16. so you are saying he should pick on the players you don't like JohnBriggs? Seems like that was the point of bringing up Cameron. None of us really know the whole story about what happens on the field. Maybe CV just isn't giving it much effort since it is spring training, who knows. CV hasn't looked good, hard to have a problem with the manager admitting it for me.
  17. These same injuries happen in football and basketball every year as well. In football you just miss a few practices until they work themselves out. In baseball you miss a few games. These aren't traumatic long term injuries, they are day to day could probably play through a lot of them during the year but why take the risk type ones.
  18. This is just completely wrong, sorry. Baseball is a start and stop game. You stand around doing nothing and then go full speed at random times. It is also an every day sport unlike football where you can take 6 days off between games to recover. It leads to a ton of pulls and strains until you are ready for it and that is what most of the injuries are. It is no different than football or Basketball when it comes to getting back into every day game shape.
  19. The setup guy is about the 15th most important player on the team and the next best RP is like the 16th most important so no big deal to me. If Villanueva doesn't like it he can just pitch better and get the job back.
  20. Sure if you just want to be pessimistic for no good reason I could see it. If a bunch of our guys collapse and nobody else improves we could have a bad team. We had a number of players underproduce expectations last year so there is no reason to think that this team is headed for sub .500.
  21. I just saw a batter from Japan bat right handed, didn't realize that was legal.
  22. My biggest issue with the conclusions was that they seemed to think we would fail because of an uncertain rotation but having watched the entire season a number of other teams with a lot of question marks in the rotation got better grades. I don't see a reason to be more positive about Houston or St. Louis for rotations as an example and both of them got more positive feedback than we did.
  23. yeah it was pretty good though I didn't like their final conclusions for the team. Lot of talk about Gallardo and Parra being the new aces and interviews with Melvin, Hardy, Hart, Fielder, Gallardo and Hoffman.
  24. Astros are talking to Pedro, now if they sign him they have a glimmer of hope at the wild card.
