  1. Lamb is all downside at this point, McGehee has some upside. I'd stick with McGehee for sure. I don't know what kind of deal Lamb has though so money might get in the way.
  2. For what its worth I don't think Hardy has hit his ceiling yet. He'll hit 30 HRs at least one time. Fielder is also one of the worst baserunners in baseball coming in at roughly 7 runs below replacement on the base paths. Between the baserunning and fielding he really does have to keep up monster offensive stats to stay in the 4+ win range.
  3. Braun left today's spring training game with the same soreness. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090325&content_id=4064980&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb
  4. My 10 year old son is probably about as good as Gwynn. I think the only thing Lamb has over McGehee is being LH.
  5. That isn't what I said so I don't know. You get into a situation where you either a) put one guy in the minors and someone else in the majors or b) keep the guy in the majors and lose a player completely because they are out of options. With Lamb I think we just keep McGehee because Lamb seems expendable to me. With Duffy if the team thinks we need more OF depth it makes more sense to keep up Gwynn and option Duffy rather than just potentially lose Gwynn. Neither one is making an impact on the team unless someone gets hurt so why lose a player completely over a few measly AB in april.
  6. I'll disagree, sticking a guy on your bench and releasing another who is out of options is just bad business. You earn your way into the starting lineup, bench spots SHOULD be as much about maximizing talent in AAA and the majors as anything else.
  7. The wild card is fantastic, I hope they never get rid of it. Probably the best change made to baseball since they added the DH to the AL.
  8. We came in at #6.
  9. Macha did say that if Gallardo is pitching well he would probably slot him #1 after the all-star break. He just didn't want that pressure on him to start the season.
  10. I'm proud that the team won the Wild Card and went to the playoffs. I am baffled that people think they shouldn't put something up in recognition of it.
  11. His 2007 was probaby better than his 2006 from peripherals, he just pitched in less of a pitchers park with a worse defense behind him. His xFIP has stayed very steady. 04 - 4.73 05 - 4.55 06 - 4.86 07 - 4.85 08 - 4.91 xERA shows him at 04 - 4.44 05 - 4.41 06 - 4.59 07 - 4.77 08 - 4.87 He is definitely in decline but it isn't falling off the cliff decline like people suggest it is.
  12. Dave Bush has a career ERA over 5 on the road and a 3.75 in Miller Park. I like him at home against the Cubs personally. Looper might not even be ready for his first start so you can't count on him pitching early. He didn't want to open with Gallardo or Parra so he can keep the pressure off of them, a choice that I wouldn't make but I guess I understand his point. That only leaves one person who plausibly should start opening day, Suppan. I completely understand the logic behind this, though I'd personally start Gallardo.
  13. No, it doesn't. It's just a name. An incorrect name. If the World Series was invented today, the title of "World Series" would not be used. The argument is valid, IMO. Its importance is debatable. World still has meanings other than the entire planet so this opinion isn't valid no matter how lame it is in the first place. Even if the entire point of the name is that it the best team s in the world the name was created so long ago that it is foolish to want to change it now. This is just another case of bored people whining about useless stuff because they like to complain about things.
  14. Sadly Suppan is vastly underrated on this forum, not that he is an ace in any meaning of the word but he isn't an auto loss like people are suggesting either. edit : typo
  15. Generally in April you skip your 5th starter a couple times because of days off, rain outs etc. If we skip anyone it should probably be Gallardo or Parra to limit their innings though.
  16. Gallardo started the year on the DL and got hurt right away. I specifically said before we traded for CC so I don't know how that is cherry picking anything. The rotation we are sending out there this year is as good or better than the rotation that had us over .500 before we traded for CC. I don't expect it to be as good as the one that includes CC, never said I did expect that. We don't need to be that good to compete for the wild card though if we see even small improvements in other areas. Looking at 3rd party projections you get the following. Gallardo - 3.50-3.99 ERA Parra - 3.97-4.57 ERA Bush - 3.98-4.50 ERA Looper - 4.14-4.68 ERA Suppan - 4.70-5.37 DiFelice - 3.40-4.33 ERA McClung - 3.84-4.80 ERA We have a legit rotation, should be at least league average with a chance at being above average without injuries. Just because it has 2 inexperienced players does not mean it is bad. Our rotation is better than what the Astros or Pirates will be sending out there. It is in the same general range as the Reds and Cardinals, it isn't as good as the Cubs. Should be competitive enough for the divisional games.
  17. If he is the #5 we won't need as many runs? I'm confused. The #1 starter doesn't mean anything more than the #4 starter. Classically speaking the #5 makes a few less starts than the rest and is different but 1-4 are basically the same.
  18. So if a country has its own league and doesn't choose to play in it then it no longer is the world cup? Just trying to figure this out. Sorry, people ranting about stuff like this just is a pet peeve of mine. The idea that they should change the name of something that has existed as long as it has is just silly. Comparing that to not letting black players into the league is just insulting.
  19. The pitching staff this year is better than it was in 2007 and arguably better than it was last year before we traded for Sabathia so I'm not buying this one bit. (assuming no injuries of course) Sheets, Bush, Suppan, Parra, McClung vs Gallardo, Bush, Suppan, Parra, Looper... I'll take the 2nd one, especially with another year of experience on Parra and Bush.
  20. Not semantics at all. When the game started the world of baseball was major league baseball. Now that they have established the name it would be silly to go and change it just because the game has spread worldwide. You should go find some aliens and have them complain about Mr. Universe while you are at it or go to a country that doesn't play in the World Cup and complain about that name.
  21. They showed all of the pitchers and CV was doing stretches sort of in the middle of the picture, they don't generally show the player they are interviewing, they show random shots of spring training.
  22. Doesn't bother me one bit. Bush should probably have his first start at home and Looper needs as much work as he can get before opening day. As long as they aren't skipping Dave Bush at any point in the season the rotation order really isn't going to matter. They can skip Parra and Gallardo just to keep a few innings off their arms.
  23. One of the definitions of the word is: 5. an area, sphere, or realm considered as a complete environment: World Series means it involves the complete environment that is MLB, the national league and the american league. The world doesn't refer to the entire planet which is another definition of the word.
  24. Someone named Backupcatchers complaining about Bush being stuck with Rivera, I've seen it all now! I think the entire 'he calls a good game' thing is overblown so it is hard for me to be upset about it. Bush gets a better hitter and a worse defender when he pitches, probably mostly evens out.
  25. haha, that was just a typo not on purpose. Though now that I see it posted in a quote I like it!
