  1. I'd be worried about the 3rd and 4th year since speedy MI don't generally age well but yeah I'd have given him that contract most likely.
  2. If you are hoping for 2006 Hall you are going to be disappointed. Heck even 2005 Hall isn't all that likely since he probably isn't a .290 hitter. I think you can hope for a .270 AVG and mid teens HR with an OPS of maybe .800 if he sits against some righties. That is most likely Hall's upside. His downside is below replacement level vs RH.
  3. I really like it overall. However the hot stove coverage has the same flaws of baseball tonight. A bunch of ex players talking in cliches and acting all silly anytime someone brings up the statistical side of the game. I do like the interviews they have done on hot stove though. When Henderson broke down how he stole, Lincecum broke down his pitching motion etc, that part was good.
  4. I don't agree on Uggla but Kinsler and Utley for sure are worth $10M and Pedrioa most likely is too (have to see him do it again to be sure).
  5. Weeks Fielder Hardy Braun Hart Cameron Lamb/Hall Pitcher Kendall But I bet it is what you guys already posted.
  6. I don't view Stetter as a lefty specialist, he is just a LH RP. So I don't have a problem carrying them both. Regardless of how this turns out it is a nice problem to have. When somebody gets hurt or is ineffective we will have a replacement for them this season. Last year we just had question marks.
  7. Everyone is free to have their own opinions but you think the bullpen got better, the lineup is obviously the same or better, we got Gallardo back healthy(worth a few wins) and signed Looper(worth a win or two). That means a half year of Sabathia and an almost full year of Sheets was worth something like 15 wins to the team last year? Or is there something other than losing just those two that you think will cause the team to fall so far?
  8. nice post obsessed. To fill in what we didn't do that we might have wanted Find front line starter - There was a pretty thin market on this and larger market teams pretty much took all of them. Lowe is the only one that was plausible for us. Find LH high OBP hitter that isn't a hack in the field - Pretty much nobody that fits this profile was available. We could have signed a horrible defensive LH corner OF and moved Hart to CF but overall this doesn't help the team at all. Overall Melvin did a decent job given the market.
  9. I've never really bought this argument for things. So because the average hitter was less talented in the past it means that the good hitters were somehow better? That never really made much sense to me. Part of the reason I think OPS+ and ERA+ are so useless (there are other reasons though like they are flawed at the core level).
  10. I still fail to see this magic high OBP LH bat that would have saved the team. If we sign someone like Dunn or Abreu to play RF with Hart moving to CF we cost the team 25-30 runs on defense and more than offset what good their offense will do. This isn't a magical world where everything you want can be had each offseason. There just was no player that made sense to fit the role you are asking for. Closest thing out there is Edmonds. The last thing this team needs is a defensive deficient OF moving Hart who is only adequate in RF to CF where he becomes a liability.
  11. I disagree with almost everything in DonMoney4Mgr's post, especially the last sentence. I'd give Melvin a B for the offseason, it isn't his fault that we lost good players and he did a good job filling the holes. It would be nice to have another LH bat but there really was no full time LH bat available and yeah Cameron isn't as great a deal as it looked but there really was no full time CF out there. Signing and Abreu and moving Hart to CF would have been a disaster defensively that more than makes up for the offensive problems.
  12. Exchange boxes. Everyone I know who has had this problem has had it fixed by just getting a new box. Some of them are just faulty.
  13. I sure hope our OF can hit because I'm not sure Gamel has the bat for 1B and Escobar isn't likely to hit much.
  14. I'm not a big fan of it mostly because the timing is so bad. I don't have a better solution for the timing but it messes up spring training and the MLB players are never ready to play at top level for it. I'll still watch it and enjoy the individual games though.
  15. haha, that has to be the worst list I've ever seen. The fact he thinks Ibanez is an upgrade over Burrell making the Phillies better this year is really laughable. The fact he thinks the Astros are better than the Brewers is even more so.
  16. Yeah that could be, but I'm not convinced FIP is any better than ERA as a stat. It is more consistent but since it ignores GB% and includes HR I think it is flawed. Basically FIP says the HR spike was bad but the HR spike didn't come with a FB% spike so it most likely was just a fluke caused by his injury. xFIP is a little bit better and that shows Suppan at a 4.91 which seems more realistic given his 4.86 in 2006 and 4.85 in 2007. Shandler's xERA is probably better too and that shows his trend as 4.44, 4.41, 4.59, 4.77, 4.87. He is getting worse with age but not nearly as much as it looked like from last years results.
  17. Ben Hendrickson never put up good stats in AAA, he just had one year that happened to mix mediocre skills with a low ERA. I think this was his point exactly. You are writing Dillon off based on 75 sporadic ABs. A lot of players get labeled AAAA because they aren't instantly successful and never get a second chance. Just imagine if we had given up on Hardy at the all star break of his first season, what we would have missed out on since.
  18. Crede is asking for like $7M. I doubt he is a viable option at this point.
  19. PECOTA projects Suppan at a 4.91 ERA. Bill James at 4.70 Marcels at 4.82. Chone at 5.31 Shandler at 4.87. Replacement level in the NL was 5.37 I think? Suppan is most likely something like a 1-1.5 win above replacement pitcher depending on how his ERA falls. If he were getting something like $5M-$6M a year then probably nobody would insult him since that is probably about what he is worth at this point.
  20. Yes they are somewhat. I'm just tired of people bashing defensive metrics and then saying the reason they are flawed is because of their own personal observations. Nothing is more flawed than one fans personal observations pretty much.
  21. Personal observations are not perfect, in fact they are deeply flawed. These same observations allow the thought that JJ hardy is a merely adequate defensive SS when he is actually a good one.
  22. Well he'd have to sign a SP and a CF and that would probably either eat half of the money or we'd be downgrading at the postiion. Then he'd have to find a 3B. In the end we'd have something like $4M-5M extra dollars sitting around. Cameron earned his salary last year and Suppan when healthy earns at least part of his. Hall could easily earn his with even a small improvement at the plate. Riske I dunno what to think since he's had such odd peripheral stats to ERA in his career.
  23. Brewers moved up to 87 wins and a tie for the wild card on the BPro standings with this move! I haven't seen half of these guys pitch so I'll just add what PECOTA thinks of them. Hoffman - 3.41 ERA Swindle - 3.69 ERA Stetter - 3.86 ERA Villanueva - 3.88 ERA DiFelice - 3.99 ERA Coffey - 4.21 ERA Julio - 4.26 ERA McClung - 4.51 ERA Gagne - 4.67 ERA Riske - 4.76 ERA Dillard - 5.34 ERA Wright - 6.18 ERA
  24. Looper going official, Gagne's minor league deal and the fact they seem to be willing to add at least a little bit more salary has upped my prediction to 88 wins instead of 86. Also my prediction on the Cubs has gone down a couple games given some research I've done for my fantasy leagues. I don't think they have a single starting pitcher that is actually trustworthy this season so I'm expecting 2-3 of them to get hurt or regress majorly at this point so we'll pick up an extra win against them.
  25. Very good signing. Gagne before his injury... .934 OPS against, 6.98 ERA, 16 BB in 19 IP. Gagne after his injury .760 OPS against, 4.33 ERA, 6 BB in 27 IP. The majority of his suckiness was just being hurt. The rest of it was giving up a few too many HR which can just be variance. He had a .230 BA against and .280 OBP against after the injury, I'll take it on a minor league deal.
