  1. I think what Macha said makes perfect sense. You don't put the extra burden on the young guy coming off an injury and early in the season off days, rainouts etc are so common that the #1 starter doesn't mean a whole lot in the first place. I guess I fail to see the problem with it.
  2. My guess is he picked an NL team so he doesn't have to DH.
  3. Cameron has a history of wearing down late in the season and Hart most certainly could use some days off against righties. I could see Edmonds getting 2-3 games a week, maybe 4 tops. If he is looking for 4-5 games he probably wouldn't be interested. I'd still love to sign him though.
  4. http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/39688602.html Man if we picked someone like Cordero or Cruz up we could really have a nice bullpen.
  5. http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/brewers.html I do not miss Yost one bit~.
  6. That is a bit better hitting than Counsell and doesn't have big platoon splits so isn't an only vs RH pitchers type of guy.
  7. I'm still hoping Maddux goes in with a 100% vote, I can't imagine anyone coming up with a case that he doesn't deserve to be in.
  8. Noticed another interesting thing today on BPro. Looking at the team health matrix. The Brewers look to have the safest team in baseball from a health standpoint with Weeks as the only red(heavy risky), Cameron and Parra as Yellow(medium risk) and the rest of the team green(low risk). The Cubs as an example have 5 yellows and 5 reds.
  9. Here are some things BPro said about him. They also mention that he is pretty low upside with a translated EQA of .241 and that he doesn't have big platoon splits so doesn't make a natural platoon player. Gamel also does not have big platoon splits. http://www.baseballprospe...le.php?articleid=8295#MIL
  10. I don't know that CV has shown he is capable of being a productive starter. Pretty much all of his success has been in the bullpen so far.
  11. Braun was the worst fielding 3B in history since they started tracking more advanced fielding stats. I highly doubt he would have ever been as valuable at 3B as he is in the OF. It also wouldn't fix our problem because Hall would be in CF still and Cameron wouldn't have been signed. That combination of moves means we don't make the playoffs last year since it would cost us at least 2-3 wins in fielding. You can point at many things that we improved on from 2007 and to 2008 but the single biggest improvement was probably defense, moving Braun was the best move Yost made as a manager.
  12. Fastball in the very low 90's, occassional slider in the mid 80's, split finger in the low 80's. Sinkers are counted as fastballs and that is his money pitch as far as I know.
  13. To me the phrase innings eater always meant a pitcher who was on the roster just to use up some innings. He is probably between average and replacement level. Looper fits the mold perfectly. We desperately needed a warm body to fill in for 150-200 innings and 'eat them up' and he is the warm body. Guys like Sabathia who pitch deep into games are 'horses'.
  14. Scouting is also why Weeks is going to the Hall of Fame and Marte is going to be a stud. Scouts are wrong just as often as stats, they aren't the gospel. You need a balanced approach.
  15. If Gamel is as bad as Braun was he is something like -25 or more defender and should be in AAA.
  16. PECOTA tweaked standings a little based on SOS. Brewers up to 86 wins, wild card team sitting at 87 so it likes us to be right in the thick of things. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/fantasy/dc/ It is also high on Swindle giving him a 3.69 ERA and 1.27 WHIP and DiFelice at 3.99 ERA, 1.19 WHIP in relief.
  17. That is interesting but yeah you were right with the sample size thing. If you just pull a random 40 ABs you could end up with almost any results from it, hard to draw any real conclusions from it.
  18. Still wish we had signed Crede with Hall as a utility man and insurance for when Crede gets hurt.
  19. To isolate this more for you lets take a look at Dunn. I think we can all agree that strike outs vs outs are probably a wash in situations where you can hit into a double play. They are also a wash when there are already 2 outs. Remember we are looking at strike outs vs outs, not just vs balls in plays. Since we know the players OBP/AVG that takes care of the 'hits' already. Dunn got up with with RISP and less than 2 outs only 103 times last year. He got up with less than 2 outs and a runner on 3rd just 46 times last year. He strikes out roughly 1 time per 4 PA. So we are talking about something between 46 and 103 PA where his strike outs had a chance to matter where he struck out between 12 and 26 times. If he cut his strike outs in half you'd have between 6 and 13 strike outs in situations where it actually had a chance to hurt you over an entire season and not every one of those would actually hurt you since plenty of non K outs aren't productive. His other 140ish strike outs made no difference at all.
  20. What if they both hit HRs. What if they both walk. They have done studies on this and it the upshot is situational strikeouts matter so little that you can probably just ignore them.
  21. The only way I can imagine you believe this is if you are using FIP for your replacement level and FIP is such a simplistic stat that it is flawed to really use it. Suppan was better than replacement last year and was sitting at his career average with 3 starts to go, he really wasn't as bad as you seem to think he was.
  22. Probably too early to really have this thread so I'd like to see it repeated in a month but right now I think we are an 86 win team.
  23. Pena is 26 years old this year, had a career ERA of 4.15 in the minors and had his worst year ever in 2008. Hard for me to lose too much sleep over this.
  24. I'm a real baseball fan and I'm not buying this one bit. The average talent of players in baseball in those eras was nowhere near as strong as it is now.
  25. Suppan is always like that with his ERA though. After his injury he gave up about twice as many HR as normal so my guess is it probably was something about the injury that was messing him up. Also we act like Suppan was just horrible last year, going into the last 3 starts of the season he was sitting at his career ERA.
