  1. You do realize that when this thread was made we were coming off our winningest month in team history right? The Astros are still in no better shape than at least 2 other wild card hopefuls and if we end up losing the wild card it won't be because the Astros played well, it will be because we sucked. Assuming we scuffle the rest of the way and go .500 we are left with a record of 91-71. The Astros have to go 17-5 in their last 22 games to match that.
  2. He had a .982 OPS against and a 6.00 ERA in his previous 9 games before the trade as well with only 2 clean innings in that timeframe. I'm guessing there was probably already something not quite right before the trade.
  3. I have to go with Cliff Lee as comeback player in the AL. From a 6.29 ERA in 2007 to a 2.32 ERA and 20+ wins this year, seems pretty clear cut.
  4. I'd be a lot more upset by this if someone other than Sabathia had been involved in the play. Regardless of whether or not the call was correct it i clear that Sabathia screwed up on the play in some way. Sure he might deserve a no hitter but at the same time he deserved to be put to blame for that specific baserunner being on so it is hard for me to lose sleep on it.
  5. I have no proof at all to back this opinion but I agree that SLG seems like it would be more streaky than OBP. More 2B/HR means more crooked numbers and more OBP means a higher likelyhood of a 1 run inning. That at least makes some sort of sense to me even though I'd have to go into research mode to put it to the test.
  6. Rauch has a 6.00 ERA and .927 OPS against for Arizona and has missed some time with forearm stiffness. Hard to really say we missed the boat given the results.
  7. Houston doesn't worry me even a little bit. If Houston catches us it is almost certainly because we played so poorly that some other team would have caught us anyway.
  8. I'd say it should be Wood considering he not only overcame the injuries but completely swapped roles.
  9. I can't fathom how booing for your own team will ever do any good, I'll never understand why people do it. Sure it might make the fan feel better but that isn't really doing any good. All it can accomplish is to sap at the spirit of the players, I highly doubt it somehow motivates them.
  10. Fielder has a 1.200 OPS in high leverage situations so no he hasn't been bad in clutch situations. ARod has a .776 OPS this year but last year he had a 1.146 which should show just how random these things are.
  11. I agree with others, Gallardo to the pen. Puts less strain on his body most likely and I would assume as a starter he'd be on a low pitch count so he isn't such a big step up over Parra or Bush. Having him in the 7th or 8th inning role would be just huge though.
  12. Before last nights game Gagne had a .712 OPS against and a 3.97 ERA in his last 14 games so I can see where Ned thought he was in a groove. I still don't want to see him in the 8th or anything, but I at least 'get' why he earned that spot for a few games.
  13. There is no way to know those percentages ahead of time though. We have won 9 of 9 starts by Sabathia so far. We most likely would have won 4-9 of those starts wtihout him, given the high R/G my guess is we win 6 of 9 even if we never trade for Sabathia. He has been worth roughly 1-3 games so far with a large random factor based on how much better than expectations he has pitched and what McClung would have done. Nobody was saying they could predict the end numbers perfectly, they were trying to predict how the trade was without knowing the future. (pared back quote --1992)
  14. I sure hope this wasn't serious... Dave Bush and Jeff Suppan have pitched like complete aces the last month too obviously they are both worth 10 games over replacement.
  15. Actually we have four Cs on our roster don't we. Rottino, Salome, Kendall, Rivera.
  16. I generally trust Torres and Shouse(vs lefties at least). Stetter and CV don't make me wince when they enter the game. Mota, Gagne, Riske, McClung I figure the odds of the other team scoring a run is pretty high. So I'd say Mota is no worse than the other options.
  17. We don't really have a reliable arm in the bullpen other than the lefties and Torres so hard for me to complain about bullpen usage too much. Eventually Riske, Mota or Gagne have to pitch important innings and none of them have shown a consistent ability to pitch well this season. Each of them have had their good streaks and really stinky streaks.
  18. Braun wouldn't crack my top 5 so I doubt it happens though if enough voters are all about HR/RBI and team W% I guess I could see it.
  19. The Astros brought in a bunch of FA in the past 2-3 years, hard to give someone manager of the year for playing roughly .500 ball which the team was expected to do anyway. I don't know who should get the award because well the whole thing is pretty silly if you ask me but I don't see how the Astros are doing anything beyond expectations given their payroll etc.
  20. Put me down for 14-12, I just have very little faith in Suppan and Bush keeping this up and there is a pretty good shot that Sabathia, Sheets and Parra all slide a bit from being overworked this year.
  21. But again you are blaming his weight for an off year when there is absolutely not a shred of evidence that it is the problem. He very easily could come into camp in 2009 with the exact same body shape and hit 60 HRs, there is no proof of any sort that the weight is an issue. I think that was his point exactly. Every year dozens of players drop large amounts of SLG for no reason at all, stop trying to read too much into it. From June 1st through Sept 1st Fielder has displayed almost exactly the HR rate that would have been expected out of him, so did the weight really only slow him down in Apr/May for some reason? Has it only hurt his doubles rate? Seems like a pretty big reach to me blaming the weight.
  22. Yeah but the August SLG is being driven by a low BABIP induced AVG most likely because of all the groundouts he has been having lately. His actual power numbers are about the same as in July, it is the singles that are down. He hit 1 HR per 25.125 AB in April/May and then 1 per 14.6 AB from June-August. Last year he was insanely hot for two chunks of the season and this year he has been hot for like one week. Feels more like natural variation and a bit of regression to the mean than anything else to me. Anytime a power hitter has multiple months of over 10 HR you can pretty safely expect him to dip the next year. Next year I expect him to come out and have somewhere between his 2007 and 2008 numbers, probably high 30s or low 40s HR, he is taking too many BBs to approach 50 on a regular basis.
  23. My money would be on the D-Backs. Zambrano's arm isn't right, Harden can't go deep into games and I just refuse to believe Dempster won't fade given the switch from RP to SP and how much better he is doing than expected. I think if any team in the playoffs is primed for the big falloff it is the Cubs or maybe the Rays since they are just so young. Granted I said the same thing about the Cardinals the last time they won the World Series so what do I know~.
  24. From June 1st until now he has a line of .264/.369/.525/.894 and 1 HR per 14.2 AB and that is right after an 0-8 stretch. The majority of the issue is still the slow April/May and amped up expectations after his big year last season. I think it is more fair to expect a low to mid .900 OPS out of him than a 1.000 OPS. I don't think anyone is happy with the season he is having right now but I don't think it is something to freak out over either. He just hasn't had that insanely hot stretch at all this season.
