  1. Carlos Zambrano Chipper Jones
  2. They were the worst defensive team in baseball last year is a big part of it. Bush is the definition of a luck based pitcher. He gives up a ton of extra base hits, his GB% isn't amazingly high, he doesn't K a lot of players so he puts a lot of balls in play. His ERA is going to jump all over the place just from normal variance no matter how well he is pitching. Marginal pitchers are always going to vary more than 'studs' based on luck, defense etc. It is all a matter of how many players you put on base and how many extra base hits(fly balls) you get in general. The more of each the more variation you'll have in your stats.
  3. Escobar is going to be the next Adam Everett IMO, well below replacement level offensively but amazing defensively. That is fine with me but not sure it is more valuable than Hardy who is average defensively and slightly above average offensively.
  4. For pitchers the most important stats are generally K/9, BB/9 and GB% and then you have to look at career trends for the more luck based stats. The biggest difference between Dave Bush of last yaer and Dave Bush of this year is BABIP, last year it was unlucky and this year it has been lucky. This is the same pitcher that everyone said was useless last year pretty much. The truth is probably around his career rates, he is a 4.50 ERA pitcher or so because he struggles with runners on base and gives up a lot of extra base hits.
  5. Yeah I don't see how we can go into next year without getting someone else for 3B. I can live with Weeks at 2B and wouldn't mind Durham coming back to semi platoon with him, we are stuck with Kendall at C I just hope Rivera gets more playtime, I'm ok with Cameron back in CF. We'll need some pitching help of course.
  6. Durham can't play every day and there is a good chance he'll be terrible next year, that is not a solution at 2B. I'm fine with Weeks staying as the 2B, I also wouldn't mind seeing us sign someone like Orlando Hudson. For all the complaints about Weeks we have two offensive players worse than him in the lineup almost every game in Hall/Counsell and Kendall and Weeks has been pretty decent since mid May with a line of .258/.340/.418/.748 which isn't that bad at 2B. If he were a decent fielder I'd really want to be patient with him another year, since he isn't I'm pretty open to replacing him with the proper player.
  7. Jenkin's OPS in high leverage situations in his career is .833. His overall OPS in his career is .834. My point is it is mostly in your head. People make up their minds on a player, they remember a big moment or a big choke and they attach that memory to the player for the rest of his career. At least 9 times out of 10 over a large sample things just even out and players aren't clutch or unclutch. Players who cannot pass a 'gut check' are generally players who do not make the major leagues because all of these guys have been high leverage situations many times and if they consistently failed in them they wouldn't be moving up to the next level.
  8. Sheets is average 6.72 IP/G. Webb is averaging 6.81 IP/G. I somehow doubt the .09 IP/G difference is why Webb has so many more wins than Sheets. It comes down to luck and run support more times than not. It isn't like Sheets is Vargas or something with the low IP/G.
  9. Baseball is an extremely random game, Sheets has pitched great as shown by all of his stats except ERA. If you are a slave to ERA or W then yeah I guess he is pitching poorly. If you dig deeper in any way then he has pitched just like he did earlier in the year.
  10. Btw Sabathia had 1 win in his first 7 starts this year and 3 wins in his first 15 starts. In 2007 he had a stretch of 10 games with only 2 wins. All you are seeing here is completely normal pitcher fluctuation that almost every pitcher sees every year. Over this supposedly bad stretch Sheets has allowed a .683 OPS against and has 43 K and 12 BB in 51 IP. The ERA is a tad high at 4.06 but it just normal BABIP and LOB% fluctuation that makes ERA such a bad stat over small samples.
  11. If Sheets doesn't have to face Berkman his ERA probably goes down a good 0.50!
  12. Shouse has pitched 1 inning and in 2 games in the last 5 days. Riske has pitched 1.1 and 2 games in the last 5 days and didn't pitch yesterday. CV was done, he has pithced twice with good pitch counts in the last 5 days. McClung has pitched 1 IP in the last 6 days. Gagne has pitched 1.1 IP in the last 5 days. Our bullpen wasn't anywhere near tired and we have Sheets who goes deep into games next. There was no reason for this.
  13. I don't have a problem with Sabathia throwing 130 pitches. I have a huge problem with him being over 110 pitches and coming out for the 9th in a 7 run game with a rested bullpen and Sheets pitching the next day. There is simply no excuse for it and it is a problem that has been going on all year. Yost has pushed Parra and Sheets all year in similar situations even though they both should be trying to shave innings because of their last few seasons innings count. When the team is up by 6+ runs you don't push your SP unless the bullpen is fried and ours clearly is not.
  14. Webb will win the CY, Lincecum has no chance. Braun won't win MVP because he'll miss 15+ games with his injury and just wont' get enough counting stats.
  15. He pretty obviously reinjured it on the swing. My guess is he is out 3-4 weeks but I'm a pessimist.
  16. There is no excuse, Yost has been just horrible with the SP all year long leaving Sabathia, Sheets and Parra in for blowouts for no good reason. I almost want to see us miss the playoffs just so that idiot can be fired. 130 pitch CGs in a blowout with a rested bullpen and Sheets pitching the next game is inexcusible, no defense for it at all.
  17. Durham cannot play every day and I bet Counsell fills in some for Weeks which means Hall plays more as well and Hall is a worse hitter than Weeks. I don't think this helps the team at all.
  18. Too bad the dodgers decided to figure out that Ethier is better than Pierre while playing us.
  19. Comes as no surprise to me that Hall, Kendall and Weeks made the three outs while everyone else got on base. Hall and Kendall are complete dead weights at the plate and Weeks is only a little step ahead of them. I'd seriously rather see Counsell every day against righties than Hall.
  20. I like putting in Riske here even if it is probably going to fail like 35% of the time. Torres threw way too many pitches.
  21. JJ redeemed himself with the 2 run HR to give us the lead... this was just icing on the cake~. Sure the redemption was pre-emptive but so what!
  22. Ned made decent, calculated moves. But I don't see how you can say he made all the right calls when the ultimate outcome didn't work out. Obviously the calls he made weren't right, because if they were the Brewers would have won. Granted I don't think Ned made any bad moves that inning, but the moves he did or didn't make ended up not working out, players fault notwithstanding. If this is how you are going to judge a manager you'll never have any idea how good one is. How good a manager is comes down to how good his players are by this logic. Are you honestly going to try to say that putting in Rivera in the 9th is wrong every time he blows a save? Or that starting Sabathia is wrong if we lose the game? I sure hope not.
  23. Yost shakes his head as back to back strikes get called balls.
  24. I bet Kent does something to tie this game. I hate the guy and he is exactly the type that seems to screw us all the time.
