ERA includes bullpen which I said the Cubs have an advantage in and it includes defense which I said they had advantage in. You simply cannot separate defense and bullpen from overall pitching when looking at total stats. The Cubs have pretty much nobody offensively that is having an off year and a number of players having 'career' years, stats are subjective and I think that their offense is overproducing at this point. If you swapped the Cub starters with the Brewer starters I doubt the overall team ERA would change at all, it is mostly a product of bullpen and defense.
Don't get me wrong, I think Yost is a bad manager and he should have been fired last year. I just think the reasons you posted are pedestrian and have more or less nothing to do with why they Brewers are winning or losing this year. The mods on this forum are uber conservative so I no longer have any idea what is constructive criticism and what gets me a warning/ban so I am now just avoiding saying anything negative at all towards another poster but I really think you are off base as to why Yost is a bad manager. It isn't because he enables things in press releases and it is completely because he makes bad in game choices. To put it bluntly yes Yost is correct that hiting with RISP is more or less completely random and there is nothing he can do about it. It is just one of many facets of the game that is completely random and the team and manager has almost no control over, especially over a 2-3 week sample.
They were 16-11 so And That, chuckiehacks, splitterpfj, yount19.u, SoCla Brew Crew Fan, eanelson4, NeedMoreFans, got it right with more fans lowballing the win total than overdoing it.
Play him every day or play him against lefties and against mid tier righties. Those are the two real options. Weeks is the best 2B on our team without a doubt in my mind, there is no way Counsell or Durham are better long term. Durham is worse defensively and about the same offensively and Counsell is a good bit behind Weeks offensively and better defensively. I could see Durham being better against top end righties though and he probably deserves to play against those at this point. It is kinda funny that this is brought up from an offensive standpoint. Since May 17th he is hitting .253/.341/.414/.755 which is pretty in line with expectations so offensively there is no reason to be benching him. I can see doing it for the bad baserunning and defense but the offense is what is generally quoted.
I would post my opinion of the original post in this thread but I would end up banned from the forum. I will suffice it to say every negative thing you have to say about the Cubs series was probably 100% the opposite of what you would have said after the Cardinals series. If you really want to be honest with yourself the two series offset each other completely. The Cubs are about the same as the Brewers from a starting pitching standpiont, they are about the same as the Brewers offensively though they have had way more overachievers. They have a slightly better bullpen and a better defense and that means they are a better team. They aren't a sweep better than us, that was just luck but most likely they will win the division and we will be playing for the wild card unless Zambrano or Harden go down relatively soon.
You could have made this post a week ago and talked about the great road trip vaulting us into a strong finish and the playoffs and look how that turned out. Momentum is mostly a myth in major league baseball, teams go hot/cold constantly and when one team stays hot for a long time people try to dig up some reason for it when it generally is just random.
Fukudome has been pretty terrible this past month and hasn't been great since April. For July he has a .591 OPS and 24 K in 75 AB. I think resting him against a tough lefty is good managing at this point.
Not really sure how these help your point. Neither of these had anything to do with run-scoring plays. That's fine but we're also out of that inning with nothing if Weeks actually makes a throw which has nothing to do with luck. I was trying to establish the fact that baseball games have a lot of little bloop type hits and grounders that barely make it through a hole. Weeks makes that throw a good 80%+ of the time, he just didn't tonight. My point was that this game wasn't one team dominating another because they were a ton better team as suggested earlier in the thread. There were a number of plays that could have changed the game and the majority of those plays were in the Cubs favor tonight. Over 100 games I still think one team wins like 52 or 53 of them and I personally can't say which team wins the most. If you want to analyze a single baseball or football game then luck is going to play a huge factor when you are talking relatively even teams. You win some you lose some, hopefully we take one against Harden or Dempster.
Throwing away routine balls, and making outs on the bases has nothing to do with luck. Theriots bloop hit into RF in the 4th was luck. Soto's bloop hit in the 1st was luck. Fukudomes hit in the 7th was luck as if Weeks were one step more to the left it is a double play. The misplay by Hall was somewhat luck as the runner was probably out at 3rd anyway. The DeRosa single to SS was luck, if the ball is hit even slightly more to the left or right it is an out he hit it just perfectly. Baseball over a single game is over 50% luck based, that is why they play 162 games. We made our share of mistakes too so it is hard to say we werent' at fault for the loss but this was clearly a game of inches where the inches happened to fall their way.
If you honestly think teams never get lucky over a season you are a fool. Not saying that is why the Twins are in the running but if you are dismissing luck out of hand then you know nothing about baseball. The best team does not always win, luck does not even out over a full season and a few lucky bounces here and there is usually the difference between the wild card and sitting at home. Tonights game came down to a few lucky bounces and the Brewers SLG coming with nobody on base. It happens but you move on.
This loss doesn't belong to any one players. It belongs to Weeks for the bad throw, it belongs to Hall for not covering 3rd on the steal. It belongs to Sabathia/Kendall for continually throwing balls in the dirt as the cubs never once chased them, it belongs to Torres for not throwing strikes, it belongs to our hitters for chasing crap in the dirt. It belongs to Yost for leaving CC in so long. This was a team loss if I've ever seen one (though hard to blame Braun of course!).
That play led to the insignificant 6th run. No way Hall sucked as bad as Rickie today. Rickie wins that award hands down. If Hall covers 3rd like he should have the Weeks overthrow doesn't mean anything as it is the 3rd out.
The Cubs had about 5 goofy inches away from outs type of hits and that was the difference in the ballgame, don't want to read too much into it even with my BOLD prediction above. Luck played more of a role in this win than anything.
At least if you are going to spend the entire thread complaining about Weeks get on Hall for blowing the play on the steal at 3rd. The inning should have been over with the flip to 2nd in that inning.
