  1. I disagree, the Brewers had a better team than the Cubs last year and we tanked it.
  2. Obviously it was Jason Kendall's HR.
  3. From a strat-o-matic level of management I think I could do it. From an actual people skills etc standpoint I'd be a lousy manager.
  4. They should just do away with the error stat. It is too subjective and the rules are silly. Things like not being able to give out an error when trying to turn a double play etc.
  5. Lou is a pretty average manager. Yost is probably 2-3 games below average. LaRussa is probably 2-3 above average. No I don't have some sort of proof to back that up, it is just my opinion. I just hope we don't look back at these years as the ones that got away because Yost was clueless the same way I view the Sherman era with the Packers.
  6. You are still just seeing the effects of the slow start on his overall stats. His June OPS was .922 and his July was .882. If he keeps producing in the .882-.922 range the rest of the year his stats will be fine. He had a mediocre April/May. I think you are reading way too much into it.
  7. Turnbow had 24 BB in 67.1 IP in 2005 and a 1.08 WHIP. 29 BB in 55 IP is still very high, that is 4.7 BB/9. As the league realizes Marmol struggles to throw strikes his BB's will go up more and more. I'm not saying he is a cabon copy of Turnbow but the comparisons are pretty fair. He has not shown he can control his pitches over a full season yet and it is going to cause him problems at times.
  8. Thought this was an interesting comment on BPro. Should give at least some insight into the value of Hardy. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/chat/chat.php?chatId=498
  9. I have no idea who the kids are that the Yanks gave up, but i don't think Marte is just your typical LOOGY. He has for his whole career been solid vs righthanded hitters and great vs lefties. Shouse is what i'd call a typical Loogy, a relief pitcher who is good vs lefties, but not a guy you want facing righthanded bats. Marte has averaged a K per inning and less than a hit per inning vs righthanded batters over his career, as he is doing this year, few if any LOOGY'S in baseball can do that. He does walk to many batters though In fact, besides Torres, a solid case could be made that Marte would be our second best relief pitcher. For his career his OPS against is .140 points higher against righties. In the past 3 full seasons he has had OPS against of .756, .781 and .817 against righties. While maybe LOOGY is a bit too strong he certainly isn't someone I want on the mound facing righties late in a game. Lefties are his bread and butter.
  10. Marte is just a typical LOOGY at this point (and no don't quote his ERA/WHIP to me without looking deeper). Nady has never been anything other than a mediocre OF until this year which to me is most likely a fluke. I don't really see the issue here, the Pirates got plenty for a couple of mediocre guys.
  11. I left my sons baseball game tonight and had to wait 10 minutes of broadcast time to hear the score and found it highly annoying. I also did not get any updates on how players had done the first time through the order. The one thing I can say about our broadcasters in general are they aren't annoying homers like the White Sox and Cub guys. I'd rather not listen to a broadcast than hear Santo or Hawk obsess over how great their team is and ignore the actual game.
  12. Over the span of a single series this is just luck and nothing more. Your average baseball game probably comes down to something like 35% luck and 65% skill.
  13. Just 2 months ago people were saying Hardy stunk and all season I was the minority when I said he had 20+ HR power and last year wasn't just a fluke and now we want to make him the 3B of the future. Opinions change pretty darn fast around here.
  14. 4-3 should be the expectation. 5-2 is great, 3-4 is ok. You can't expect a sweep of the Astros and the Brewers and Cubs are close enough in talent that you would probably assume a split.
  15. The whole don't mention a no hitter thing is silly and plenaty of announcers don't pay attention to it. I could see not mentioning it say in the 8th or the 9th inning but not mentioning it in the 5th or 6th is just weird.

  21. This is sort of a common misconception about Howard. At age 23 he put up an .883 OPS in A ball and a lot of that came later in the season. In 2004 he put up good numbers in AA and AAA as a normal level of development. It wasn't until he was 25 that he was held down and then he was up after 61 games. It had nothing to do with keeping him cheaper and everything to do with him being blocked by Thome who went down with an injury. He also couldn't hit lefties at all for quite some time so still had holes in his game to exploit. To compare Fielder to him, Fielder had a better year in A ball at age 19 than Howard did at 23. His 2005 stats in AAA at age 21 were very close to what Howard did in AAA at 24. On a normal team Howard probably would have been a september callup in 2004 or they would have made room for him in 2005 by making a trade to start the season. If Howard was held back at all it was by about 2-3 months at most. As for Weeks, the whole 2nd pick in the draft thing gets way overblown. It was a crappy draft class, Weeks was rushed more than most of the players and he had to deal with playing through injuries for a good part of it. Sure in hindsight I'd rather have Nick Markakis or maybe Danks, but most of that list is looking worse than Weeks so far. All Weeks needs to do is take the skillset he has already shown and raise his AVG by about 20 points and he will be a very solid player, his defense is even looking better this year. Delmon Young Rickie Weeks Kyle Sleeth Tim Stauffer Chris Lubanski Ryan Harvey Nick Markakis Paul Maholm John Danks Ian Stewart
  22. I'd rather have Gallardo who is 90% of Sabathia and still have been able to use LaPorta to trade for someone else or maybe even still get Sabathia.
  23. 20 K and 0 BB for Bush in his last 16 IP and we decide to sit him for 3 weeks. Just baffling.
  24. We are 85-77 over the last 162 games. I only post that because earlier this year people were posting the last 162 games like it somehow discredited how good the team was since we started hot, got cold and then finished strong.
  25. By my math we are due to go 1-8 and I won't be happy camper! I'm going to assume I lowballed them though.
