  1. He wants to pitch, and that's great because that's how he SHOULD feel. I do think it was pretty funny when he added "take the HRs away and my results look a lot better." True Chase, take your problem away and there's no longer a problem. And if Kratz could run faster, he wouldn't be so slow. In his defense HR's allowed is one of those stats that doesn't stick very well season to season. A simple xStats search shows he allowed 30 HR but his expected was only 23 given how hard and at what angle balls were hit off of him. His history doesn't suggest this is some skill either, he historically has pretty much matched his expected. His actual peripherals still suggest he might have been lucky to keep that ERA under 4 and he has looked worse as of late, so I don't blame them at all for not using him.
  2. Rockies have two left handed starters and two left handed relievers. I bet somewhere in all of this there is a situation Broxton is worth at least calling up to PH even if it is as a decoy to force a pitching change.
  3. No, its just being done in an intelligent way. Trying to judge a manager by looking at every single decision individually would never work. Of course it isn't perfect but it doesn't need to be. The question of whether a great manager is worth 5 wins or 10 wins or 30 wins doesn't require perfection. The ballpark answer is most likely 5 wins while I'm sure there are those who believe in the 30.
  4. There is no reason that Broxton can't pinch hit to face a lefty late in the game if called for. Thames really doesn't bring anything at all to the table. Taking a RP over him would be fine too but I don't think any offensive players should be there over him.
  5. You do it at a macro level not a micro level. The truth is fans think the manager makes or breaks a team but it is hard to find any evidence that they have even as much impact as a single good player. I know it is fun to come and blame the manager every time a RP gives up a run but when you look at those decisions at a macro level they just aren't the big deal fans want to make them out to be. And as I said above, if Molitor had some ability to take talent and elevate way above its natural level we would have seen it more than just one season. That season just looks like an outlier and nothing else.
  6. I don't know that the 3 of the teams with the lowest K's made the playoffs thing really matters. Teams that are out of it tend to bring up a lot of younger players, younger players tend to K a lot more. That part is probably just noise. I don't really care very much how often a player strikes out, I just want them to take walks and get on base. Cain not striking out as much as say Broxton is useful, Cain carrying 96 more points of OBP than Broxton did last year is what really drives the value and those two things aren't mutually exclusive.
  7. Yeah he was one of them, Mike Petriello seemed to drive it all though. It is just odd that an alternate non traditional broadcast was like 100 times better than the normal game coverage. They seriously need to change how they are covering the game. The ESPN coverage was just painful to watch for that game and as soon as I was reminded that the other cast existed the game was way more enjoyable.
  8. It is beyond clear that the stat cast guys who don't have a lot of experience announcing were by far better than anyone else at it. Kind of sad really just how knowing baseball and not just spitting out every cliche you ever heard makes the game so much more enjoyable.
  9. Yeah I agree with this, especially after watching how terrible the guy who did the other wild card game was.
  10. What does a manager really do if he cant get credit for getting a pretty poor team to win games? They have studied this and the manager really doesn't have a very big direct impact on the teams win/loss record. How he manages the players themselves and their access to the media is bigger than anything they do with the lineups and bullpens. The 2005 White Sox won a world series because everyone on the team had their career year at the same time, it wasn't because of something Guillen did. If Molitor was somehow managing the team to a record way above their talent he would have done it all 4 seasons he managed, not just the one. That type of skill would be very consistent, not leading to wildly varying results like it has.
  11. "Severino allowed five of the first six Twins to reach, gave up two homers and found himself trailing 3-0 an eye blink into the win-or-go-home game. Severino did not elicit a swinging strike on any of his 29 pitches" Yeah because that kind of thing can't happen to a starter. Him giving up a 2 run HR had 0 to do with bullpenning.
  12. Arenado's career OPS at Miller Park is 1.250 and vs Mil is 1.089. I hope he stays cold but I fear he won't.
  13. Yeah I think we saw the same thing with the Brewers right before the all star break. When you play a long stretch of consecutive days and have a few injuries on top of it the team just runs out of gas. We just got lucky that our rough schedule came heading into the all star break and the Cubs got it heading into the playoffs.
  14. If we had chosen to let Arcia play 3B and 2B this year he would have also been our best defensive player at each position. I'd expect that to hold true for any good defensive SS in the majors. That part is really getting overblown.
  15. He paid the price for such power, though, as his brains leaked out of his ankle. It was probably overstated but he certainly wasn't pretending.
  16. Interference being actually stopping a DP or intending to stop an attempt? Either, I don't think there was ever a chance at a double play in that play.
  17. I think what Baez did was probably inappropriate but I don't think it is actually interference if you look at it reasonably. I don't think what he did stopped the double play at all.
  18. I have never seen a player tag himself out so impressively as what just happened there with Baez. MVP MVP MVP.
  19. Not buying it, he will stay in and hope for an easy pitch.
  20. Bad tag by Baez there.
  21. I think Maddon is a great manager and he makes a lot of really smart moves. I don't understand the reason that Rizzo is out of this game. He is the only hitter on the team that has been hot recently. On the flip side I don't get how you take Blackmon out. These just seem like bad double switches.
  22. I don't know if he is Manager of the Year since I don't watch every game of every team in baseball. I will say that this was a very tough team to manage this year. There were a lot of injuries in the first half to deal with and in the second half there was a lot of depth that all needed to find playing time. Add in the fact the starting rotation had to be protected from ever facing a team a 3rd time so the bullpen was relied on more than most teams. The fact that we had a number of key pieces that needed playing time but had to find it playing out of position. This was a really difficult juggling act that he handled very well. If he wins the award it is definitely deserved.
  23. I didn't feel that Molitor did anything special in 2017 with that team, it just played way over its collective head. I don't have a big issue with this. He probably didn't deserve to get relieved of duty but I can't say he did anything that made him untouchable either.
  24. Seriously just watch the statcast broadcast. The espn one is unwatchable. Aww man, I totally forgot they were doing this. I'm kicking myself now for torturing myself for more than a full game listening to the ESPN guys.
