  1. Skewed or not it still the record and that what counts In the case of a small sample and predicting the future the context counts way more than the actual record, so yes it is important to note. I do not believe we have really struggled against the Pirates this season. They happened to catch the team at its low point for 2 series. Those two things are very different.
  2. On the 15th of August they sent him away from the team to get an MRI. On the 17th,18th and 19th of August he was out because of the shoulder injury. On the 29th he was hit in the shoulder and the face, on the 30th he was out to get stitches. It is a really hard sell to not think that most of this was about injuries.
  3. Gotta love the guy, but there is no way he makes the play-off roster at this rate. Unless the Reds somehow rally and make the playoffs.
  4. I am so confused by how bad Josh Bell has been. I know he hit a HR tonight but it was only his 11th. Last year he hit 26 as a rookie. How do you fall that far off over a single season. His plate discipline has been fine, his doubles power has been fine, he has been mostly healthy all year. His advanced stats like wRC+ are even fine. He somehow has been just as valuable while dropping 15 HR on the season.
  5. Yes if he hurt his Shoulder and multiple times missed games because of soreness and then he got hit in the injured shoulder by a pitch that then ran up into his face. I would completely expect sporadic playing time. This is beyond a non issue.

  7. The same people who don't care if Counsell gets asked about this are same people who couldn't believe he wasn't asked about the Hader situation. The media job is to ask any and all relevant questions. If the Cubs switch catchers from Contreras to someone else Maddon will be on the SCORE getting grilled. It's just shocking to me that the question has never even been addressed at all. When your starter has been injured off and on for 2.5 months you start the backup, what exactly are they supposed to be addressing? When Judge sat out for 2 months they didn't have to address why he wasn't starting.
  8. So Hader should probably not be out there now but it is crazy that he had 16 straight outs via strike out, how is that possible.
  9. The whole Pina vs Kratz thing is completely confusing to me. Pina was on the DL most of July He had recurring shoulder problems most of August and he has got hit in the face and needed stitches in September. The reason Kratz has played so much is Pina has been hurt.
  10. It is such an oddball stat that I can believe it. That is one you either know or you don't. No middle ground.
  11. It is really hard to know if a team just has your number or if it is just bad luck. If we have a 50/50 chance to beat every team we play we should go 5-11 against 7% of the teams we faced over a 16 game sample. Doing it against one team on the season fits the 7% narrative. It also easily could just be a case of our hitting not matching up with their pitching. With 30 teams each playing that many games against at least 4 other teams we should see something like 8.5 teams with that type of stretch against other teams, which means more than 1 team on average per division. Since the real odds aren't 50/50 that number should be even greater. What i'm saying is that kind of stretch is going to commonly happen without it really meaning anything every season. Hard to say if this is really meaningful or not. The fact that the biggest struggles came during our toughest stretch of travel/games played on the season suggests it is probably just random to me though. It is just being heavily skewed by our worst stretch of baseball all season.
  12. The most games the Rockies can win is 92. So the Brewers need to win 5 to tie for the last wild card spot, 6 to take it outright assuming the Rockies win out. So I'd say the way most people think about it the magic number to clinch a spot is 6. I'm not really sure why that link above is saying 5.
  13. We will agree to disagree. Madison is funding the team and gets overshadowed by Huntsville with the first half of the name which is just frustrating. Having a 4 word name is just too long and unwieldy in general. Since most of the country doesn't know what a trash panda is all they really see is the word trash. When you look at that name what stands out most to a lot of people I have talked to is just City Trash.
  14. This is kind of a two sided issue for me. As a fan I'd love to see a shorter season by time played. If they could chop off a week or two at the start of the season and a week or two at the end of the season I'd be very happy from a pure watching the game enjoyment standpoint. The season does end up dragging on too long. Now I totally get the argument about compromising stats and as I'm a fantasy baseball player and general stats nerd I even totally agree with it, it would hurt the game to lose all of those games played. So my two opinions are at odds with each other here. Now the other side of the issue is the player safety side of things. I don't think players are pushing for a shorter season as much as they want more days off. As a fan I absolutely hate that idea. Nothing is worse than the team having 2 or 3 days off over a 2 week period. I want to see them play every day, I don't need breaks. If the idea is to cut out 15 games while keeping the overall season the same length I absolutely hate that idea even though it makes total sense for the players.
  15. His pitch values agree with this, his success against fastballs is way down. Pretty common thing for aging players.
  16. Not sure a sub 7 K/9 and over a 3.5 BB/9 with a 41% hard contact% constitutes awesome. Lopez hasn't shown me anything i'm going to miss so far this year though it is still way too early to close the books on him obviously.
  17. I'm not going by just FIP though, I'm also looking at the xStats versions which do account for how hard hit it is. No composite ERA stat gets him under a 3.50, if one is an outlier sometimes it is the others missing something on a pitcher, when they all say a certain level it is almost never sustainable. ERA takes almost 3 years of data to become meaningful, it just isn't a stat people should be using for evaluating players in a single season.
  18. Everything about the guy has been impressive. I shook my head in wonder when we picked him up, I was wrong... I would say 73 IP of ERA is 100% completely worthless and means nothing. Now I expected Miley to be a 4.50 ERA type talent, he has been a 3.5 to 4 ERA talent so he has definitely been better than expected but his actual ERA means jack and squat. It just shows how useless the stat is for judging pitching.
  19. Brauns xwOBA over the past few seasons is .372, .356, .350, .340. He is definitely fading but it isn't as stark as people think. Traditional stats (even OPS) are just bad at telling people what is really happening. The fact he gets even smaller samples than most players over a season due to his injuries just makes them even less reliable.
  20. Counsell has done a really good job of keeping the bullpen rested so we don't have a lot of guys melting down like a lot of other bullpens on contenders. We are setup pretty well for heavy bullpen usage in the playoffs. Probably moreso than any other team in in the NL.
  21. Chacin or Miley and hope they go 3 innings. Very fast hook though.
  22. We are 12-6 against the Reds on the season and have been over .500 against them in the 2nd half. Losing a game to them doesn't create a narrative. The Pirates have had the Brewers number for sure, they are the reason the Brewers probably won't win the division. Going 5-11 against them has really hurt the team. But one team having your number for a season isn't what stops you from being a championship team. It isn't like the Brewers just stink it up every time they face a bad team.
  23. We are more likely to win the division than miss the playoffs still. Both chances are really small though, 3% vs 4%.
  24. Shows the difference between division winners and those hoping for a Wild card spot. Oh come on you can't really mean this. The Cubs have had awful series against bad teams at times too. This is just how baseball works, stop trying to read so much into this nonsense. If you want to point to any single reason the Brewers aren't in the division lead it is the bad stretch right before the all star break where the team played a million games in a row and lost like 7 out of 8, but the Cubs had an awful stretch just like that too. Baseball isn't a granular game like that, it is a marathon, every team goes through those mini bad stretches. Every team loses to teams they should beat etc.
  25. The Brewers have the 3rd best record in the NL since the all star break. It just happens that the Cardinals and Cubs have the 1st and 2nd best records.
