  1. Wow this is just idiotic. There was no reason for DS to build a bullpen this year. BUT THeRE are reason he should trade his prospects for Pitching ? Sure if it is fringe guys that might need to be exposed to the rule 5 draft. We played over our heads and traded away a guy who may not make the majors for a good arm. I have no issue with it. I don't want them trading major pieces though.

  3. It is easy to say this was a great 1-1 game won in extra innings but it simply was not the case. This was two completely dysfunctional offenses flailing away randomly at garbage hoping to randomly connect for a HR. The Cubs happened to get it first. So many truly awful at bats this game.
  4. really no difference between the two. Hughes is probably just a little bit worse. Id take Hughes every day over Torres. Hughes can't even manage 6 K per 9 as a RP, he is just awful. But I'm glad Counsel made the switch here, Torres couldn't have looked worse in that AB. The Cubs still have Davis and Montgomery and the Brewers are just praying some really awful RP can get through a couple of innings. This is an unfortunate loss most likely.

  6. Prettt sure we score at least 2 runs if nobody swings at a pitch all game. So much chasing.
  7. It is being pushed hard. Within 5 years there will be some sort of machine assistance to calling balls and strikes. Unfortunately it will probably take longer than that to finally get the DH in the NL.
  8. I like Straily ok but an extreme flyball pitcher like that is tough to stick in Miller Park.
  9. Suter has a 3.55 scFIP so the peripherals mostly support him pitching well as well. This doesn't just look all sorts of flukish like Guerra last year. For what its worth Anderson is at a 3.59 and Nelson is at a 3.45. Those 3 have been legitimately good pitchers this year.
  10. It depends on when they want to start to really compete. If it is next year our bullpen is going to be just awful so they need to keep Knebel and sign Swarzak or someone like him in the off season and probably 1 or 2 other RP. If we are looking more at 2019 or 2020 trading him makes sense though.
  11. I would talk to the Royals about Hernan Perez. Escobar has been just terrible this year (for most of his career really). They could also use a utility player. Perez is a player that is nice to have but we can work around him this year and starting next year he will be blocking players who need to get major league experience. I don't exactly know what the Royals have to offer as I don't follow prospects for other teams though.
  12. Since ERA is such an awful stat for small samples of relief pitching I give you scFIP stat for the Brewers. This is using mathematical models to decide hit probability and HR probability and turning it into ERA. Swarzak - 2.49 Knebel - 3.12 Barnes - 3.62 Torres - 3.88 Drake - 4.18 Hader - 4.39 Hughes - 4.63 Scahill - 5.02 Peralta - 5.04 Not much surprising in there for me. It is nice to see that Swarzak looks to be for real. Maybe we can sign him to a 2 or 3 year deal after the season. Scahill and Peralta have been just awful. Hughes is just a filler guy at best. Drake and Torres are fine as the back end of a bullpen. Barnes probably looks the worst he has all year because he is coming off of back to back bad outings. Hader really hasn't been very good but I expect those walks to come down at some point. Hard to judge a guy that young. The Brewers need to upgrade at least 3 arms in this bullpen to be a real playoff quality team imo. If one of those is Swarzak and Hader develops next year(and stays in pen) we may get away with just 1 more arm but it is iffy. Peralta, Hughes, Scahill all have to be gone. There is no reason Peralta or Scahill should pitch another inning for us. I'd rather they take a shot on someone in AAA than waste more time on those two.
  13. I guess it depends on what your definition of minimal is but Khris has registered 3748 innings in LF so far with a -22 Arm per DRS & a -21 Arm per UZR. Yoenis Cespedes has registered 3888 innings in LF over that same time frame with a +27 Arm per DRS & a +22 Arm per UZR. That is about a 5 win swing or about a win per season that can be gained or lost by a LFers arm. To be fair, yoou're talking about one win per season between probably the absolute best arm in baseball in LF vs. the absolute worst arm. Most guys are going to fall somewhere in the middle, and the difference between probably 80% of the guys in MLB is going to be somewhat negligible I'd say. To put 1 win into perspective it is the difference between a Domingo Santana and Orlando Arcia this year, it is pretty huge. It is the close to the difference between Aguilar and Villar. It is a very large difference.
  14. Bad as this game was, gotta say, this bit of comedy was solid gold. Well played. Not a big Blazek fan but you really do have to give him a mulligan here. In what world are you expecting a guy who hasn't' started in what ? 3 years to go 3+ innings against one of the top 5 offenses in baseball. He was totally set up for failure here.
  15. My complete collapse starting in August prediction started a half month too soon I guess~.
  16. This comment is utterly ridiculous. There is no way the manager cost a team 3 losses in a 9 game stretch. Even Yost wasn't that bad. Last nights game was lost first by the defense, second by the bullpen, third by the offense and 4th by Counsel. He played a role, mostly when he didn't let Hader pitch to another batter but it was a really minor role compared to everything else.
  17. People are grossly exaggerating how bad Counsel is with the bullpen. I will say that Ned Yost won a world series and it was specifically because they idiot proofed his bullpen. He has to be the worst manager in MLB history when it comes to bullpen usage. Counsel doesn't trust Hader and he has a really bad bullpen to work with, in general he uses what is available as properly as most managers if you keep in mind he doesn't trust Hader. The not using your best RP outside of saves is something 90% of manager do wrong so can't really knock him personally for it.
  18. Recent changes in the game just do not make rentals as attractive as they used to be.
  19. Sorry Boomer5 but you are really embarrassing yourself in this thread.
  20. So are the Rockies though. That team is not getting out of the Wild Card round.
  21. No, it was definitely the bullpen. an average defensive team gives up 0 runs in the 8th. Even if you ignore the first misplay there were at least 2 more outs left on the field which led to the final 5 runs.
  22. There was no reason for Stearns to invest in the bullpen before this season so stop trying to say he doesn't know how to build one. The defense cost us this game more than anything else anyway. It is an issue with this group of guys that I hope is just fixed with replacements. This is a bad defensive team which puts a lot of extra stress on a pitching staff. I really don't get why Counsel took Hader out. The guy is part of the future and is going to need to learn how to pitch in big situations like that. Knebel wasn't going to get used yet in the 8th so we knew a bad RP option was going to have to replace him. If Hader is good enough for one of the best hitters in baseball he should be good enough for a slumping guy. I say that as one of the lower people on Hader this year too. That was a situation where you let him try to finish the next guy off. For whatever reason the Swarzak trade didn't go through until this morning. It is pretty rare for a player to pitch on the same day he is traded.
  23. Agree, Thames has no range at all, or leaping ability. Like the guy, but he's a DH Pretty sure it was Aguilar tonight. I turned the game off.
  24. League average defense at first and Harper never gets up to bat. Hard to blame that one on Barnes.
  25. That isn't math though because this isn't a system where a team comes close to winning all of their games. In say football where you play 16 game seasons and some teams only lose 1 or 2 it makes sense, it does not make sense in baseball. With 63 games to go with teams that tend to lose at least 35% of the time it doesn't work. If there were a bunch of rainouts for the Cubs going into the final 2 weeks of the season and the Brewers have 10 more wins than the Cubs and 1 more loss, the Brewers chances of winning the division would be insanely high and the Cubs insanely low. Just looking at the losses and ignoring the wins does not work in this situation. It makes no logical sense. Sure the Cubs could win out and take the division but they are clearly behind the Brewers in the standing at that point and they would switch places in a heartbeat. If the Brewers were done and the Cubs had 3 to play I totally get your point though. They control their destiny and we do not. But with 63 games left to go you can't look at it that way.
