  1. It's not that the Brewers were searching for left-handed bench spots ... but what is the problem with adding as much depth as possible? He has major league experience and has performed well at the major league level, what is bad about putting a guy like that (cheaply) in your system? I agree it'd be nice to have another right handed swinger on the roster off the bench but that doesn't mean we should stop trying to improve the team elsewhere. If we start the season and Gerut and Counsell get hurt ... Inglett is suddenly a pretty valuable pickup.
  2. Take it for what it's worth. Stats are weird. Some people can point out that Doug Davis led the National League in walks last year ... others can point out that only Randy Wolf and Wandy Rodriguez had more quality starts (I don't want to get into a debate over whether that stat is viable). He isn't breaking the bank and he is an upgrade over Suppan. We now have a little depth to cover a short injury ... I approve.
  3. Maybe I'm behind the times. Has anyone signed Reed Johnson yet? I think he'd be a nice fit. What does our bench look like? Right now by my count it is Counsell, Gerut, backup catcher, possibly Heether, 5th outfielder (Oeltjen?) The only two locks in there are both lefties. I'd like to have a stable right handed bat off the bench. Johnson plays above average defense in the corners and has a career line of .282/.344/.411. The only problem here then is that we really have no power options to pinch hit late in games. But Johnson is a vet who I'd rather have than Oeltjen and I'd feel comfortable with him getting consecutive starts in case of injuries. *edit* I just looked and he made $3 Million last season. If we can wait out the winter a little bit and he isn't picked up ... he could probably be brought in at that same price or maybe a touch under.
  4. ooh, I didn't even think about that aspect. Whether that is valid or not, it does make a little sense and can't hurt the cause when trying to track down arms. I'm cool with the signing for the price, considering with the young fellas coming up it is much better to have a fall back if everything goes wrong with the others. Also, he will be able to shorten the learning curve for Lucroy and Salome... and I'm happy it's him to teach and not Kendall. I don't want Kendall teaching our young guys anything.
  5. Here is how I am looking at it. If we can keep both ... great. However, I'm assuming (given the weak FA starting pitching pool) without looking at this list that Braden Looper is about the #4 or #5 best option available. If signing Hoffman costs us Cameron, I'd assume Melvin will just roll the extra Cameron money over to Looper and bring him back. Now, if signing Cameron would have cost us Hoffman, I'd assume Coffey gets elevated to the closer spot and we can't afford Looper either. So for me ... Hoffman/Gerut/Looper > Coffey/Cameron/(Villa/McClung/#5) I'd rather give Gerut the chance in center with two reliables rather than have a reliable in center and two question marks...
  6. What will that cost, maybe $20 million per year? I can't see the team being willing or able to devote 25% of the payroll to Fielder. Probably close to that ... and I don't see it happening either. But with our current roster and contracts... I can stomach the contract and I'll just pretend Prince ate Jeff Suppan and his salary. Last year I wouldn't have even let this thought cross my mind with Prince's attitude and whatnot (no big payday)... but right now Prince just seems to be having way too much fun and is happy to be playing here and at such a high level. I understand his history and his agent... but I wouldn't put it past Fielder to give the Brewers a modest discount (5-10%) to keep himself in a comfortable situation with his friends. *shrugs*
  7. Oh.. and it is pretty apparent to me that as long as Prince and Braun are batting 3-4 in our lineup we are a .500 team... regardless of how bad our pitching staff is (see: 2009). Prince needs a long term deal. Period.
  8. This is wrong in so many ways... Looper is 10-6. Yes he has gotten awesome run support, but there could be a good argument made that Looper has saved our rotation this year. Where would we be had we not signed him? McClung/Villa/Chase Wright as our #5? We'd be 6 games under even right now...
  9. For a team struggling to score runs ... if Mike Rivera isn't starting again tomorrow, I'll be very disappointed. Regardless of whether this is a flash or if he actually gets into a little groove with the bat... he can't be worse than Kendall and we need the offense. Roll the dice and give him some PT.
  10. Martinez pitched 5, giving up 7 hits and 3 earned runs while striking out 4. He got the win. Welcome back Joe!
  11. I know he signed with Pittsburgh on a one-year deal this past year... so that makes him a free agent. I don't think he has re-upped with Washington? I dunno, maybe it is just because he seemed to be on base during 80% of the innings that we played Washington... but is Lorenzo Cain going to be ready next year? I want Morgan, he is going to get a raise, but is still very affordable. (for the sake of keeping the boxing gloves in storage... I don't want to get into Rickie Weeks being our/a leadoff hitter.. we can debate that all winter) Do people here like him as much as I do?

  13. Ya know ... I'm happy this has happened. Now, instead of staring at the TV watching Mike Burns and (enter player X here) get beat up on the mound and just feeling sad... I can at least smile at the TV knowing that it is Claudio who (although arriving on horse drawn chariot to save us) is the one getting shelled. Kind of like an old buddy who you know is bringing you down but you have so much history together that you can't help but keep him around. I'd much rather go down in flames with an old friend who I can laugh at rather than some strangers I don't know. Thanks for coming back Claudio... here's a sword and shield. We are outnumbered and you are now on the front line.
  14. You would give Hardy AND either Lucroy or Salome for Bannister? Or am I reading that wrong and you are saying either Hardy or Salome or Lucroy? My heart skipped a beat for a second...
  15. General statement time. Melvin has made a few blunders (DD for Estrada, Linebrink in some opinions, etc) ... but for the most part has a clean and possibly glowing trade resume as the Brewers GM. But I just have a bad feeling about him dealing with Jack Z... one of those "student becomes the master" situations. For some reason I can see Jack stealing an extra player we don't have to give up... or getting a free upgrade on a player. I love being aggressive, but let's stay smart!
  16. I am actually a little sick to my stomach just looking at that deal. We'd give up a young, proven major league shortstop, our starting catcher next year, a valuable corner infielder in our system, and our supplemental first round pick from last year ... for half a season of Washburn, a work in progress in Morrow, and a "catcher" who hasn't caught a game since May and can't supplant Kenji Johjima and Rob Johnson in Seattle. If you took Salome and either of the other two prospects out of the deal I would BEGIN to consider it.
  17. Hmm... maybe we were watching two different plays then. The play I saw was a centerfielder covering about 150 feet of outfield, a short stutter step before running into the wall, bringing the home run back, then losing it on the way down and catching it with his barehand AS HE FELL to the ground. This wasn't your once a week robbery that we usually see.
  18. I understand I'm still riding the high of watching it live... but that catch by Wise is the play of the year REGARDLESS of the situation.... but given the situation, is that one of the greatest catches of all time?
  19. I'll give my assessment... and this is basically a major league assessment, as my knowledge on Gillespie and Roque is minimal at best. I see this helping the Brewers a few ways with the day to day club. 1) Solidifies the lead off role. How many guys have we had lead off since Rickie went down? 5? 6? I can count McGahee, Counsell, Cameron, Kendall, and Hart. Am I missing someone? With Lopez, we can go back to showing the same lineup everyday again. 1) Lopez 2) Hardy 3) Braun 4) Prince 5) Hart 6) Cameron 7) 3rd base 8) Kendall I think it will benefit the offenses' mindset when guys come to the park and know where they will be slotted each day. 2) Counsell/McGahee back to the bench. Adding another real pinch hitting option to the bench will be a great benefit. This is especially true for Counsell, who I think will get better as he gets routine days off again. Counsell really thrived in that role earlier this year. Nothing against Gamel... because he had some nice pinch hits while he was here, but you are going to get a good at bat from Counsell everytime. Gamel looked overmatched at times. Are these benefits worth the two minor leaguers? Opinion I guess... plus I think this is a big positive for Gamel to get his at bats again. I am going to be positive about the trade until I am forced to not like it http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Go Crew.
  20. Joe Posnanski's review of this article is pretty funny... http://joeposnanski.com/JoeBlog/2009/06/19/bugging-harold-reynolds/
  21. Absolutely real.. I've seen him do it. Womack played for the Rattlers back in '04. I was an intern then as a beat writer for the Mariners Scout.com website. I got to go to every game and cover them... interviewed Josh a few times. Awesome guy ... his at bat music was Christian Rock, ha! That was a good team... they had Asdrubal Cabrera, Mark Lowe, Eric O'Flaherety, Rob Johnson , Matt Tuiasasopo, Jeff Clement for a little while etc... Anyway, he made the Midwest League All-Star team that year and a video of him doing that bat spin was played on the jumbotron when he batted and the crowd loved it... though I think they thought it was fake as well. Watching him do it live was as crazy as watching the video... you thought he was doing magic. I'm still not sure how he did it...
  22. *sigh* ... maybe the ghosts of Jason Kendall past will make a few appearances in the next few weeks... Also, it is giving up an out... but for the comic relief part of the equation I would love to see Kendall try to bunt his way on to lead off tonight's game...
