  1. I think it's worth exploring as well. I just think it doesn't happen often as typically that would mean a GM trading away "their guy". It's also probably easier to explain your draft pick/prospect just failing as opposed to having the guy you traded for failing or trading away a player who becomes a star on another team.
  2. With the reports coming that the Brewers are still actively talking on Lucroy I get the feeling a trade is coming before the season yet. I like Texas, Washington, and the Twins as potential best matches.
  3. I agree. I don't like the move but the price was right I guess. I think people are being optemistic thinking he can return anything of value. He's the kind of guy you kind of need to roll out there everyday and suffer through the crap to make sure you don't miss the few hot streaks. The best you can hope for is him hitting all his home runs against the Cardinals.
  4. Finally, I find somebody with some sanity. The Packer fan base contains some of the most ignorant, spoiled fans there are. Shoot, I can't even get through a line at the gas station without hearing from multiple wanna be GMs on how awful Thompson and McCarthy are and how they need to go. I'm all for striving for greatness but at some point you need to ask yourself what it is that you're asking for. There's only 1 NFL team in the last decade that I'd consider to be more successful. Blowing up a competent regime, the odds are much greater you end up as Cleveland, Detroit, Oakland, etc.. than New England.
  5. I don't think that is the goal at all. Granted the primary goal isn't the major league roster next season but i seriously doubt the goal is to be the worst team in the league just to get the top pick. I think what many people here are missing is this isn't the Astros or Cubs of five or six years ago. We are way ahead of those teams. I don't think the goal is to field the worst roster. That might be a by product of trying to rebuild. I feel like with the guys they are bringing in for the ML roster they are trying to hit on a lottery ticket. No, the odds aren't good that any of them figure it out enough to be of great value but at least there seems to be a method/plan to what's going on. Athleticism, versatility and, some OB skill seem to be priorities when filling out the roster. He could've just as easily filled out the roster with guys like Joyce, Izturis, Nava, Carter etc. for very little cost and had MLB name value. If that was the case I'd say the goal is to field the worst team in baseball. Young is the first guy that IMO doesn't really match up with the rest of the acquisitions so far and other than Middlebrooks is my least favorite off-season move but it a MiLB deal so it doesn't much matter. They could do worse than a potential really fast, versatile bench player.
  6. I like the move; versatile player with speed. He's not much different than Rajai Davis who seems to have some value every year. If he could get his BB% up to 10-11% he'd be plenty useful.
  7. Combination of A & B. If they start hot it should mean the team is healthy and obviously performing well. Players are typically not moved that early (not that they couldn't be), so I'd let the next two months play out and see where they stand. Most likely it wouldn't be in very good position but hopefully Lucroy, Braun, and Garza would've gained trade value. I do think, if the roster remained what it is now, they could challenge for .500.
  8. I hope it freed his mind and he reaches his potential. What I don't like is the hero mentality that some of these stories/individuals receive. I hope he's not targeted with any hate by teammates or other players. I also hope teammates who might be uncomfortable aren't targeted as haters or intolerant either. There's a big difference between hatred and intolerance vs. uncomfortable and disagreeing. It seems lately, many can't wrap their head around that.
  9. I like the Pinto pickup. I'd say there's really nothing to see regarding the 3 transactions other than filling out their roster. I don't think it guarantees anybody is being traded.
  10. I like the idea of bringing Latos in, only if it's a one year deal. I'd guess it's still a long shot but maybe. It really depends on how confident he is in himself. I'm sure there's a team willing to give a 2-3 year deal for 7-8 mil per year. However if he has a solid season with his track record and judging by what guys like Leake are getting he'd be in line for a 100 million payday. The Brewers could overpay him for a year. There's really no risk for them.
  11. I was just thinking the same thing. I have no doubt the Cardinals will make that work somehow. He'll keep throwing ground balls, they'll figure out a tweak that ups his K rate a bit and he'll go on to win 15 games a year until he's a FA again.
  12. I wouldn't want the goal to be sucking a badly as possible. If that's the end result then so be it I guess. It will also mean the current roster has generated zero value. The MLB draft is a bit of a crap shoot anyway, so picking first doesn't really guarantee the same thing it might in other sports.
  13. I think it's a really fair trade and makes a lot of sense, but it's just not how the Rays operate. They'll trade one of their current starters and slide Snell in that spot.
  14. Count me in for any trade the nets Giolito. I'd doubt they'd move him; Arcia would need to be involved I'd think.
  15. Can we go to the Houston well again? I was reading up on AJ Reed but came across Tyler White. Maybe he could end up a Kevin Youkilis type. Doesn't sound very athletic but he's played 3rd so maybe he'd have some versatility as well. I just don't want a veteran retread. I don't see the value in that. Alvarez has been brought up numerous times and each time I ask myself why. I think it's a grand delusion thinking he'll create enough value to return anything at the deadline. There's not a line for him now and there won't be then.
  16. Mazara and Ortiz and I'd call it a done deal. I also have no interest in Gallo.
  17. That's a great article, thanks for posting. I would imagine many of us (including myself), are overestimating the trade value of Lucroy Another case as to why he might need to paired with another player like Smith or Peralta. That was a good write-up. I guess I don't feel like it's a tough spot at this point. There's no urgency to trade him now. They reference Frazier in the article; if the best offer is something along the lines of Pereza I would just rather have Lucroy as my catcher for 2 years. Maybe he never regains his value but what have you really lost? If you hang on to him and he puts himself back in the conversation of being an elite catcher they'll have no problems moving him for a decent return. If pairing Smith with him would bring an elite level prospect back then I'd be ok with it I guess, but I feel like Smith should have enough value on his own to merit a good return so it feels like a bit of a waste of resources.
  18. I'm not really sure how I feel about a salary dump of Braun, essentially. At that point, I'd consider just letting him play as an old guy on our rebuilt team on a 2 year, $36 million deal or whatever it is at the end. I agree. Braun, if healthy (yes, at this point that's a big if) is still an above average bat. I'd hold out hope that he stays healthy for half a season and you can get a desperate team at the deadline. With the extra "playoff" team there are very few teams that are truly out of it anymore and obvious sellers. The Brewers could again take advantage of that and find a nicer return for Braun. At this point, from a fan perspective, his salary isn't a hindrance to rebuilding or fielding a better team so just to rid the team of a contract doesn't much matter.
  19. I don't like it. Maybe if Lucroy was in the final year of his contract and it was the trade deadline. Cron is just a guy and Heaney is overrated imo. I think the years of control, contract and potential to be a top 2-3 catcher for the next couple seasons warrant a bigger return.
  20. I think each kind of has their own merit. I will say I didn't really believe in the Royals. They acquired some decent young players, some that were kind of late bloomers but they let them develop at the MLB level and let them play together. It obviously has worked for them. The Cubs and Astros weren't afraid to just lose and be awful; unfortunately I think that has to be the Brewers attitude as well. The other interesting thing to me is, it doesn't seem like drafting or trading for highly regarded pitching was prioritized. The higher end prospects are mostly bats. While Melvin got some flack around these parts for prioritizing bats over pitching, it seems to me some others might feel that way as well. And I agree, Wisconsin fans have proven they'll support a winner. Mark A. has also but a lot back into the Park to make it a really great place just to go regardless of W and L.
  21. Count me as a little underwhelmed by the return for Frazier. He's one of the better third basemen in the league. I know Pereza has a nice prospect ranking but he doesn't excite me much. Schebler seems interesting as a side piece at least in a Khris Davis sort of way. Makes me a little less enthusiastic about a Lucroy trade as I'd value the two pretty similar. I know... two completely different GMS and different situations..
  22. Remember when Axford was the real deal? I'll side with trading the reliever for prospects almost every time. That said, I think it makes sense for both teams.
  23. Always in interesting debate. I don't think it's black and white. I know statistics have "proven" there is no correlation between runs scored and K rate and often the team with the higher K rate will have more power hitters and score more total runs. I'd be interested to see what the correlation is on a per game bases; like what does it do to the deviation on a per game basis. I'd feel better about a team that puts up 5 runs every game over a 5 game stretch than a team that puts up 10-10-2-2-1
  24. Teoscar Hernandez seems like he might fit as a Rule 5 pick.
  25. On a championship caliber team is Miller even a #2 type? I don't get the attraction to him.
