  1. Wolf's touched 91 pretty frequently here. The strange disdain he has for Lucroy must have him amped up.
  2. Getting harder to temper the enthusiasm with Greinke and Hart getting closer to returning. Solid win.
  3. But there really isn't any reason to assume this.
  4. Don't mean to jinx it, but how many shutouts did the Brewers have last season? This would be 3 already.
  5. For what it's worth, I never liked the Wolf signing from the beginning. But I'm not ready to chalk it up as a wasted investment yet. Maybe the way he closed the season last year is still too fresh in my mind, but he's always been a good pitcher in the latter half of the season and the Brewers will value that stability. I really like the near-MLB arms the Brewers have right now, but I'd be much more comfortable with Randy Wolf starting pennant-chasing games than one of Rogers/Rivas/Peralta should one of the big three (one more brilliant start and I'm counting you in, Chris) go down. There are better ways to get a defensively competent SS should it be necessary. EDIT: This offseason is a different story. I'm talking about trading Wolf mid-season 2011.
  6. Props to Betancourt today and for the whole series. Big part of the series win, seriously.
  7. Betancourt's played a real solid SS so far as a Brewer. Get some runs now.
  8. Should've just IBB'd Pena and left in Green to face Soto.
  9. Looks like Gallardo will have to provide his own run support...hopefully Braun and Fielder carry the offense again.
  10. I still say Gomez can be a valuable bench player with a manager willing to pinch-run. Having a guy who can steal 2nd and 3rd in late innings and potentially stay in to play all-league defense at a premium position is useful. Trading him while his value is lowest isn't a good idea. If the semi-platoon between Gomez and Morgan works they can keep that situation in CF for as long as 3 years. That probably isn't likely to happen with guys like Schafer, Komatsu, and maybe even Gindl knocking on the door at that position in the coming seasons, but I think it's a rather exciting thought.
  11. Was also at the game - I couldn't tell for certain how well Wolf was pitching. Definitely had the curveball working well early. But after the gassing in the 4th that I largely attribute to the dropped popup, I thought the 5th should be his final inning. The further damage wasn't much but at that point in the game the Brewers were nibbling back and the extra run stunted the momentum. The 6th inning was the key for me - tack-on run for the Cubs plus Zambrano running on fumes quickly retiring Morgan, Kottaras, and Reed (why is he on the roster?). Obviously the 9th inning is the big topic. Does Counsell have poor numbers historically vs. Marmol or something? 2 different opportunities to get him an AB there and it didn't happen. One of the more notably poorly managed games I remember seeing (on both sides). I really liked the Roenicke hire and still have plenty of optimism, but he certainly did not put the team in the best position to win tonight.
  12. I feel that if you allow someone like Estrada to actually settle in he might actually succeed. Every time he gets back to the big leagues the leash is so short it can't be comfortable. The stuff is there, like a right-handed Narveson. He's certainly paid his dues in the minors.
  13. I've never been too comfortable questioning an athlete's toughness. I don't know what Corey's going through right now so I don't want to stay anything in that regard. However, as a player he definitely has moments where he doesn't seem completely focused. I think "unreliable" is a better word than "soft". I don't expect him to produce like I expect others on the team to produce. I still feel like it's a bonus when he does produce, like last season.
  14. Is there a more reliable reliever vs. right handers than Moylan? Man, he is good.
  15. Now I understand why Peralta was being considered to fill in for Greinke. Electric stuff, very energetic on the mound. If he learns to keep it over the plate he could be terrific. Rivas has a strange arm angle. It's like his body sets him up to go more 3/4 but he comes straight over the top.
  16. He didn't do anything today, but he hit fine in the Reds series. You have a different definition of fine than I do. A .724 OPS is not fine. No, you just have this strange vendetta against Casey McGehee. Citing OPS for a 3-game series? The fact of the matter is that the Brewers have seen nothing but solid pitching and haven't had enough solid ABs like Braun's in the 8th to get these guys out of their rhythm. As the zeros pile up they start pressing and trying to do nothing but hit HRs. Happens all the time.
  17. With Hart out the Brewers need some sort of threat at the bottom of the order. If Lucroy returns before then I can't imagine Nieves sticking before Kottaras. I never thought that was in question. I think within a couple of days Morgan starts in RF until Hart returns. In a way I'm relieved that Kotsay hasn't done anything memorable so that Roenicke is justified in taking him out of the starting lineup in favor of Morgan. I'm still a bit upset that Reed gets the temporary spot over Boggs. Would be comfortable with him in the 6 hole. Still the only long-term problem I see for them is Betancourt, as it was before. Getting Hart and Lucroy back makes the offense much stronger.
  18. Wait all winter for baseball and now we have to wait even longer for the team to get its act together. Just disappointing.
  19. The Brewers will have to hit good pitches early in the count against this guy. I'd love to blame Brewers hitters, but Wood is just dominating right now.
  20. Who comes straight out of spring training throwing darts like this guy? Geez.
  21. I think most MLB hitters can handle any fastball when they know it's coming.
