  1. The priority and urgency should be improving our starting pitching, I hope DM is focusing on that right now. While I like to see the Brewers lock up Prince for a few more years if possible, I don't think it's urgent or necessary right now. If the Brewers do improve their rotation, I think it could show that the Brewers are serious about contending and may make it more compelling for Prince to stay longer. Btw, I really hope DM aims higher and do better than Washburn or DD please. It's a disappointment if these are the guys he's targeting.
  2. I'm all for getting Halladay, read that he wants an extension to waive his no-trade clause. I wouldn't mind offering Parra and Gamel for him, plus a 3 year $60M extension.
  3. Totally agree, Davis is definitely not what we need. I really hope DM stays away from DD.
  4. I had been hoping DM would decline Looper's option and he did, good move. I don't get why McClavy and TH wants DM to pick up Looper's option in their articles. We desperately need to upgrade our rotation and keeping Looper would be keeping status quo. We'd end up struggling next season whilst our key players get more expensive. I think 2010 and 2011 are the Brewers chance to shine whilst we still have Prince, and Yo and Braun are still cheap. We need to be aggressive this offseason in upgrading our rotation. Our starting pitching is holding us back, not our offense, and upgrading our rotation would certainly help our bullpen. In the NL, only 4 out of 16 teams make it to postseason, that's the top 25%. We need better than average starting pitching to have a realistically shot. With some teams looking to cut payrolls such as the Tigers and Jays, and a down market for FAs this year, we have a good opportunity to get the pieces we need in trades or FA.
  5. I really hope the Brewers work harder on pursuing Lackey, please don't give up so soon. We need to add another top of the rotation pitcher to realistically have a shot, guys like Halliday, Lackey or Hamels would be what we desperately need. Hopefully DM is working hard on pursuing a trade for Halliday or Hamels right now.
  6. I like Wang, so I'm all for signing or trading for him at a low price.
  7. When did I say that people should call out others in their organization publicly? I think you have misread my words, I was talking about the unrealistic expectations set by the GM. If you're referring to me, I don't believe everything people say to the media, especially certain politicians. But this is just the national pastime, not national politics, I don't get a whole bunch of disappintment about it. I didn't say that the Bill Castro and the pitching staff failed because of a JS article. I'm saying that there was unrealistic expectation placed on them, some key pitchers were made out to be better than they really are, and Castro paid for this failing expectation. That JS article like others articles and interviews give us a sense of Melvin's thinking, that's all. I do think Melvin meant what he said about his winning the division goal / expectation. Things were going ok until the all-star break, and when the pitching continue to sour after the break, Melvin decided to fire Castro but is it really Castro's fault? I think if anyone was dealt a bad hand, it was Castro.
  8. I think you're putting words in my mouth. If it is an unrealistic expectation, I think as GM it would be responsible to say nothing rather than something not true and misleading. It would be much better to actually improve the team that could realistically backup his "win the division" expectation before saying it, if not don't say it. As GM, what good does it do to say out an unrealistic goal and have it blow up in your face later on? And how does that help the team? It has added a lot of pressure and grief to the pitchers, added presure to the offense to increase run support, and has cost Bill Castro his job. So what you're saying is it's the fans fault for believing Melvin's words, all this time Melvin doesn't mean what he actually says, and there are many gullible Brewers fans out there? I guess those fans that believed the hype and bought many tickets because of it, and those fans that write "In Melvin we trust" should have their heads examine. Thanks for enlightening me on your understanding of what PR is.
  9. I agree with the above statement. During preseason, this is what Melvin said about this year's rotation in this McCalvy article. Seems to me, DM was very satisfied with his rotation and that's why he wasn't aggressive at all in upgrading SP through trades during preseason. Instead, all we heard from DM during preseason was him debunking trade rumors for starting pitchers. DM's comments about our SP is our strength is also pretty bewildering to me, considering that most pundits at that time were saying the Brewers rotation was the Achilles' heel to their playoff hopes. Now it seems rather funny to hear DM change his tune months later, as if no one knew that our rotation would turn out to be poor. Another article from preseason that make me chuckle, Melvin's expectation: Win the division. How does Melvin expect to win the division with a below average rotation? I guess Melvin would say anything to sell more tickets, way to mislead Brewers fans Doug. Sadly, Billy Castro got the short end of that stick and ended up scapegoated by DM despite over two decades of loyal and dedicated service to the organization.
  10. Hypothetically speaking, if Cincy offer you Harang for Hardy, would you do it? Just curious.
  11. Yeah, that's my impression too when I read it. Seems to me like a very convenient excuse to blame his sucking on his contract rather than himself. It also seems like a PR savvy thing to say in case Mariners fans are reading. But frankly as a Brewers fan, it's a very annoying thing for me to hear him say that.
  12. In the FA list, I hope the Brewers pursue Lackey this offseason. Either that or trade for Halliday, Webb or Cain.
  13. This season is turning to be a disaster, yet there's no vent thread to let off steam. When steam builds up with nowhere to go, after some time it may explode.
  14. I'm not sure about this so I went to research the archives of Brewers.com and JSO. Apparently DM made his $100M offer to CC on Nov 1, 2008, two days before exercising Cameron's option on Nov 3, 2008. Haudricourt's blog entry on Nov 3 indicates that DM wants to have both Cameron and CC in the team, and one of the benefits given for picking up Cameron's option is it "might help the Brewers in their quest to keep the big lefty". Reading through the archives, keeping both CC and Cameron were in the Brewers plans for 09 afterall. I guess when DM and MA said that CC was a special case, they were willing to increase payroll to accomodate him.
  15. Frankly, I can live with Gwynn in CF if it meant having CC. But I think DM would've re-sign Branyan to play 3B and move Hall to CF.
  16. Sadly the Brewers didn't exactly put up much of a fight for CC when they had the chance. They could've the raise the price further on the Yanks and that would be sweet. If Brewers had signed CC, they may have not pick up Cameron's 09 option instead to save money.
  17. Dr Evil (Austin Powers)
  18. If Hammond can obtain big savings by trading away Bell or Ridnour, followed with signing Sessions, things would look better than it is now. But that's gonna be a tough thing to achieve.
  19. I think Kendall's game calling and defense are way over-rated by some, such as Bill Schroeder and Macha. Bring in Rivera please, offense and slugging is critical now. Moreover, Rivera's game calling and defense isn't that much worse than Kendall.
  20. Not to mention the big difference between Cabrera and Cameron financially. Cabrera cost $1.4M in 2009 and will be under Brewers control till 2011 relatively cheaply, while Cameron cost the Brewers $10M in 2009 alone. As I had mentioned before, if having CC meant no Cameron and Hoffman, the Brewers would still be better off.
  21. To me, the short answer is Yes. Having the CC and Yo combo in the rotation would be huge, probably a bigger positive net effect than the Braun and Prince combo in offense. DM and MA had said the pursued of CC was a special case, so signing CC doesn't mean losing Coffey (2009 salary only $800K) or Cameron. Signing CC would mean no Looper and probably no Hoffman, and that's fine with me. And even if having CC meant no Cameron and Hoffman, it would still be a better for the Brewers.
  22. Nice to learn that Obama is coming to Singapore this November, hope I get a chance to see him in person and shake his hand.
  23. A big Yes to Hall for Harang, really hope this happens. It's certainly way better to get Harang than just eat Hall's contract for nothing. Harang is better than Suppan and Looper, he may possibly be better than Bush and Parra too. Please DM get it done asap.
  24. I think Melvin won't be fired this year or next. He signed a three year extension keeping him here till 2012, doesn't make sense for MA to fire him and eat his contract for the next 3 years.
  25. What a first inning! Glad I didn't miss it. But 2 Ks for Cameron in the same inning, Yucks.
