  1. There are two different discussions: 1. Scooter not platooned - I really wish our management would understand that he should be platooned, but they didn't bring in much competence for the RH side of it. 2. Scooter leading off even against lefties - There is no argument for this. Given that #1 has no great options, at least put him at 8 in the order if the team is trying to win like it claims it is.
  2. There's a difference between a calculated risk and insanity. Every team takes calculated risks every year. The Brewers did it last year, handing the LF spot to Davis. This year, they're throwing Nelson into the rotation. Trying to get one more productive year out of ARam and KRod. These are all calculated risks. Same is true with Scooter, but I can see it either way. I would give it a try, but can see why others would not want to play him at all aginst LHP, or at least hit him 8th. Calculated risk: Nelson = stud prospect and had a 1.something ERA in AAA. Davis = crushed his way through the minors Borderline insanity: Gennett = has not really ever hit lefties too well beyond A ball. There is a difference between a calculated risk and something that is doomed to fail. If Mark and Doug had traded off all of our vets for prospects, I'd be fine giving Scooter a shot on opening day because who cares? However, it's just wishful thinking that will almost surely go wrong and hurt our opening month(s) until we decide that Scooter cannot hit them.
  3. I'm of the mind that Scooter will never be near average at hitting lefties, so if you want to hit him 8, then fine. I think he's a very nice piece to the team, but should be platooned. In a year where we've pushed payroll near our max and did not sell the farm for the future, we're going to waste a month finding this out? I mean, a small amount of data tells us that Logan Schafer is not going to be a good MLB hitter at all, but let's just put him at cleanup to find out, right?
  4. That's my issue with it, really. Gennett has shown zero history except maybe in the low minors of hitting lefties. I'll wait until it actually happens but I really hope he isn't going to waste a month of the season finding out that Gennett cannot hit lefties. Saying, "I hope that Logan Schafer develops into a good leadoff hitter" is almost as hopeless as hoping Gennett does against lefties and throwing him in there until it inevitably fails.
  5. Ron says he's deciding between Scooter and Gomez for the leadoff position. If he puts a .150 OBP guy out there against lefties 1/3 - 1/4 of our games I'm not going to bother watching. His "roles over reason" strategy make him one of the worst managers in baseball.
  6. Not sure why that really matters since all our outfielders are right handed. I didn't really quote who I was responding to, but I was saying this in response to the person saying Braun should see reps at 1B and keep Parra in the OF because of his defense (quote was a post or two above mine). In reality, Parra is taking grounders at 1B to be an insurance policy at 1B for Lind and should play the exact same role of RH pitching only player at 1B just like Lind. That's what I was responding to. If Lind is out and we're facing a lefty, the OF should be Braun/Davis/Gomez almost every day and have Jimenez (yes, I know right now his MLB splits are bad) or Lucroy at 1B.
  7. Parra has pretty awful splits against LH pitching, though. I know he's a really good defender, so maybe that trumps it, but it would be nice if our GM could find depth in the team/organization to not have offensive weaknesses all over the place (like when they trot Scooter out there against lefties more often than not or have to play Parra full time at some point or with Braun at 1B and therefore he faces a bunch of lefties).
  8. If somebody was removed from the outfield not-named Parra, you'd need to have RH bat out there to at least partially platoon. Parra is a very good hitter against RH and poor against LH.
  9. Parra is an excellent bench piece. Assuming 6 games in a week, I hope Parra plays 3. 2 for Davis against the tougher RH pitchers and one break for Braun or Gomez. He's also a nice bat to have in the 9th given that almost every closer is right-handed. He has a high .700s career OPS against RH pitchers. Other than that, the bench mostly is crap. I think Jiminez could be useful if matched-up correctly.
  10. http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=1642&position=P Yes, this one. The last 3 years he has basically combined to be a replacement-level pitcher according to it.
  11. I don't like the value because I'm not sure K-Rod is going to be above replacement-value anymore. I don't hate it at the price, though. What I love is that this potentially Roenicke-proofs the bullpen. He now has righties that are at least moderately neutral in splits and won't do something stupid like stick Will Smith in an inning role again where he faces a bunch of righty hitters (right Ron? Right!?!?!)
  12. Assuming he doesn't become a HR derby pitcher like he was in 2014, I'll live with it.
  13. We're going to close out so many teams that will never have seen such a closing of the door with all of this closer experience.
  14. Well, you guessed right on the August part. September/October, not so much: http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.cgi?id=perezch01&year=Career&t=p Do you have any basis on the attitude thing or is it just the general "veteran player with grit" analysis?
  15. How good is Cecchini's defense? Guy seems like he might be a 5-10 HR/.700 OPS 3B. Gonna have to be a stud defender to carry that. EDIT: He bats lefty. Music to my ears.
  16. How long does Boston think Ortiz's "vitamins" will hold up for him? After 2015, it's reasonable to think that 1B or DH could be open for Panda and Cecchini can have his spot there. Holt is a platoon/utility guy and Allen Craig seems to be not very valued right now.
  17. Probably a AAA signing but I'd also put him as somebody I'd rather have hitting against LH pitching than our current MLB 2B.
  18. If your choice is between those 3, Gomez runs away with it.
  19. I'm just not a big believer in throwing out contradictory data by using a carefully chosen end point or extrapolating PH ABs to regular at bats. We argued this a little bit in another thread. One side is using batting average in high-A ball to prove he can hit lefties, the other is using an outlier, horrendously bad season in the majors. I think if you really go all the way up the charts, though, he has never hit lefties very well at any level other than maybe a sample of 50 or so ABs at a lower level.
  20. I agree with the majority of your post. One point, though, is that this zero OPS probably isn't far off of what Scooter will put up against LHP when he's healthy and in the lineup, to argue it the other direction.
  21. Yeah, you'd see teams going with full platoon lineups. Like 8 or 9 lefties on any given day (unless they had a stud RH hitter like Braun or David Wright).
  22. I am probably in the minority, but I'd have probably done this deal for the Brewers if he agreed to play corner OF. The only weakness being left is pretty bad defense in the corner OF spots off the bench (not including Parra, who is great). I'd have gone back to the full platoon at 2B and let him play the corner OF spots here and there (5th OF). He'd also be a decent bat off the bench.
  23. I like his player-first approach and he moderately "gets it" in terms of splits and such. I strongly dislike his use of "roles" which cloud his otherwise decent understanding of the splits and other factors. The aggressive nature of his management I can take or leave, but am more on the side of "dislike." I think he could dig his own grave this year by doing things like not platooning Scooter, having an "8th inning guy" that isn't good in various matchups, etc. in which case, get me the next manager.
