  1. Looks like the Brewers Blog URL changed, which matters if you have it bookmarked like I do and they haven't redirected it. The old one: http://blogs.jsonline.com/brewers/ The new one: http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/brewers.html
  2. In a year where money is going to be a major issue, I think it would be kinda foolish to "give up" on Weeks. He'll probably get around $2-3 million in arbitration next spring, and when we're looking at tying up a lot of cash in a free agent pitcher or a position player acquired in a trade, that's a bargain. At worst, Rickie contributes slightly above average offense for a second basemen, with obviously below average defense but not by as much as some people think. His 162 game averages are .245/.352/.406 and 19 home runs. You can do a lot worse. And that doesn't even touch the possibility that he could really have that breakout year. As the OPS lines cited above prove, he once again put up a .944 OPS in September after that incredible binge at the end of last year. He could reasonably hit .260/.380/.450 with 20+ homers. I think it would be irresponsible to dump Weeks for little return and spend $10 million on a replacement second basemen like Orlando Hudson when Rickie's a perfectly fine option and that money could be used much better somewhere else.
  3. Other than Cain Probably have to throw Aguilar in there as well, someone might take a shot at him if he's made available. But yeah, those two are the only obvious ones. Depends what they think of Narron and Miller, as well as Michael Bell. Not really related, but I'm curious to see what happens to Derrick Turnbow.
  4. CC could easily turn into the next Livan Hernandez so I'd look out in giving him 7 years. Here are Livan Hernandez's ERA+s by year: 127, 85, 93, 114, 77, 88, 141, 126, 102, 91, 80, 125, 95, 71, 76 Sabathia: 102, 100, 122, 106, 104, 140, 143, 162 I don't think it's a fair comparison to CC. I want no part of 7 years, either, but Hernandez had one exceptional year and a bunch of mediocre ones while CC has put up three straight spectacular years after five solid ones. CC's also more reliant on the K to get outs and that's a trait that tends to stay pretty constant.
  5. So why wouldn't Sizemore move to a corner spot and they try to maximize Brantley's value in center? They have a vested interest in Brantley's success... from a Cleveland perspective LaPorta and Brantley have to pan out or the Sabathia deal was an absolute bust for them. This would make sense if they had no chance of contending, but it would be a poor way to try to win ballgames. If Sizemore is good in center and Brantley is not good. Playing Sizemore in center and Brantley in left would make the team better, they wouldn't be able to justify moving Sizemore because Brantley has more value in center. BA's opinion was that LuCroy is raw/weak on D. Really? Everything I've read says that Lucroy (the C isn't capitalized, by the way) is pretty polished defensively. He's definitely regarded as better than Salome that way. Can you provide a specific BA mention that he's raw/weak on D? I can't find any good scouting reports right now, but I have never heard his defense criticized.
  6. The problem with that, TheCrew07, is that Brantley isn't all that good in center. The Brewers played him at 1B a lot early in the year and when Cain got called up to AA, they played Cain in center and Brantley in left. THT has Sizemore at .932 RZR and 94 OOZ plays; for comparison, Mike Cameron was .935, 64 in about 25 less games. I think those who extremely prefer Brantley to Green are just overlooking the fact that Brantley hasn't proven at all that he can play center, and his value is extremely limited if he needs to play left field.
  7. Problem with losing Brantley is that he IS everything the Brewers lack - a LH, good hitting, high OBP guy. Taylor Green is this. A LH, good hitting, high OBP guy. Also, he has power, and he can play at his position. None of us want to lose Brantley, but Green is very valuable too.
  8. I'm reading a -9.30 DRS for Fielder and 2.30 for Lee, and -1.00 for Fielder overall and -5.80 for Lee. I'm not familiar with this offense plus defense stat, but I think the -9.3 is worse than the 2.3 in defense. Traditional good defensive 1B like Texiera and Pujols are about 11 DRS, and I know Mike Jacobs gets a rap as a bad defender and he's -10.3 DRS. So I think the stat confirms that Fielder is one of the worst first basemen in the NL.
  9. Is there a third baseman available on the market that could provide better production than Ibanez, who has an OPS+ of 124 from last year, and whose OPS+ has been over 115 for the last five years? No, but you just can't completely ignore defense. Braun almost cancelled out his offensive value as a rookie by being as bad as he was at third base. Even if you expect him to improve at third, the team would be worse with Braun at third and Ibanez in left than it would be with Braun in left and a league average third basemen with league average defense. If the Brewers just wanted to upgrade their offense, they could sign Frank Thomas and put him at short and Barry Bonds come in to play center. But that doesn't make the team better, and that's the point.

  11. Ned's made his call in the panic/relax question. I don't mind shaking it up a bit, but this is a little weird. Hart has a .292 OBP in the second half, Weeks is at .378- I realize it's a righty starter, but still, that's a major gap. Sadly, I bet the people at the Journal-Sentinel blog are rejoicing that Weeks is finally out of the leadoff spot. Kinda nitpicking, but wouldn't it make more sense to switch Hardy and Durham in this lineup? R/R/S/L/R vs. R/S/R/L/R, I don't know. I never like when he presses the panic button and hits Braun fifth. If you're going to shake things up, play Rivera and Gamel or something. I'm just glad Gwynn isn't starting in center, I guess.
  12. Something we should probably watch is where the possible destinations for Sheets and Sabathia end up- we want them to be 16 or higher, because if a team 15 or lower signs one of them we'd only get sandwich and second round pick, but if the teams they go to are 16 or higher, we get their first-rounder and a sandwich. The Astros are at 21, and the Rangers are at 15. It'd be nice for Texas to get hot and pass up the Marlins if Sheets would land there. The Yankees and Dodgers are 17 and 18. If we're going to lose Sheets and Sabathia, it'd be pretty awesome to have 3 late first round picks and 2 sandwich round picks.
  13. I don't particularly dislike BA or anything, but every single routine flyout, the batter either "got jammed" or "hit it off the end of the bat". I'm convinced he just alternates which explanation he uses for why they didn't hit it hard. In general, I don't like many TV play-by-play or color guys, you can already see what's happening so they're left to tell you what you don't know. If you know the game, the don't bring much to the table. I prefer turning down the TV volume and listening to Bob and Jim, they tell you what's happening, and I love the long pauses. I think BA and Rock should let the story tell itself more often, like they did when CC got that K to end the seventh the other night.
  14. Yovani is reporting to Arizona on September 15th Still "unlikely" that he will return It appears today's sim game went very well. Edit: Should probably check author before attributing a line to somebody http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  15. Rotoworld's take on the situation:
  16. Thanks for the update jeffh- you might want to check your spelling on Salome and Escobar http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif. I know it's just announcer speculation; I could definitely see Escobar coming up because he's already on the 40-man. I don't think Salome would play at all if he were to be called up, we barely use 2 catchers here and unless they want another pinch-hitter, plus they'd have to do some 40-man shuffling as Gamel's going to take up the only spot available right now.
  17. I just read the JS blog -- doesn't seem Tom either believes Frank Kremblas or he's chosen to ignore us again. That makes having someone like Jim Powell all the more awesome, he's willing to not only mention something like that but give you guys credit for it too. I wonder if Haudricourt does find stuff here sometimes and just passes it off as common knowledge. To add something to the minor league discussion, Mike Jones finishes the year with an ERA over 6. I wonder what the organization has in store for him. On the other side, Chris Cody finishes his Brevard season with an ERA under 2, it'll be interesting to see how he adapts to AA next year.
  18. I mentioned it in the Link Report as well, but Jim Powell mentioned the Kremblas interview in the seventh inning of tonight's game when he was talking about the potential callups. He gave credit to Brewerfan for the link.
  19. Mass, Jim just mentioned the Kremblas interview on the radio broadcast and gave credit to seeing it linked on Brewerfan.net. Congratulations!
  20. It's more about protecting Gamel from left-handed pitchers. I don't think Rottino would do badly facing off against mostly left-handed pitchers. In his minor league career, Gamel has hit .315/.375/.461/.836 against lefty pitching and .303/.373/.502/.875 against righties. If anything, he's a rare young guy that doesn't need to be platooned. In the same way, Rottino is extremely balanced: his OPS against lefties is .773, against righties .766 in his minor league career.
  21. Tom Gorzelanny You've been dominated by Ryan Joseph Braun
  22. I think the point is kinda being missed here. It's great to get new Brewer fans, I know a bunch of people that are just following the Brewers now that could've cared less about baseball a couple years ago. That's how we all start being fans, isn't it? However there's a major difference in being a new fan vs. being someone who thinks they know it all about the Brewers and baseball. I'll throw out names like JDLR, Joe Winkelsas, Trent Durrington, Chris Magruder, Victor Santos, Moeller, Justin Lehr, and nobody knows any of them- and that's only back to about 2005, when I first started caring about the Brewers. Also, this is kinda relevant to the conversation, does anyone else think that if FSN showed some different stats on their little graphic when batters come up it might help some of these new fans education about the game? It'd be awesome to have Avg/Obp/Slg and even OPS on that graphic instead of average, homers, RBIs. Those are the stats that "casual" fans are quoting when trying to discuss, and it's hard to convince them otherwise. It's hard to tell someone that Mike Cameron is a better offensive player this year than Corey Hart because of that.
  23. Fontenot is the worst for me. The thing you don't point out is the .510 slugging percentage- what the heck? Prince Fielder is slugging .501, there's something wrong with Fontenot slugging .510. Also, Geovany Soto drives me insane. Why is he good at BABIP?!?!? http://www.fangraphs.com/graphs/3707_C_season_full_7_20080825.png I was surprised that only one person mentioned Jason Lane in this thread. Jason Lane: Brewers :: Bill Hall: Reds. One random guy I used to hate was Carl Everett. That batting stance had that twitchy thing... ugh. Others: Felipe Lopez, David Weathers, and Jose Valverde.
  24. Marcum was sent down after missing a month due to an elbow injury. ...he did make seven starts between the elbow surgery and the demotion to AAA, just to clear up the situation, it's not like it's a rehab assignment. We can resume discussion about Dave Bush's peripherals any time now http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif.
  25. I don't really have a side on this, but the Blue Jays recently sent Shaun Marcum to AAA to work on his control. He was leading the AL in ERA when the Brewers faced him. He has a 3.60 ERA and 1.17 WHIP in 135 Major League innings. It does happen.
