Long-term extension for one: Greinke or Marcum?
Menace II Sobriety replied to adambr2's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Looks like I was on the right track about a Pineda - Lawrie swap. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/01/blue-jays-turned-down-pineda-for-lawrie-swap.html Blue Jays, Mariners Talked Pineda For Lawrie Swap Alex Anthopoulos hinted last night that some young Blue Jays drew trade interest this offseason, and Jeff Blair of the Globe and Mail has the details on some talks that never materialized. The Blue Jays and Mariners discussed Michael Pineda, but the Blue Jays balked when the Mariners wanted Brett Lawrie in return for the right-hander, according to Blair's sources. Instead, the Yankees obtained Pineda for Jesus Montero last month and the Blue Jays held onto Lawrie. The 22-year-old British Columbia native made his MLB debut in 2011, posting a .293/.373/.580 line in 171 plate appearances. Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik selected Lawrie in the first round of the 2008 draft when he was Milwaukee's scouting director. Meanwhile, Pineda posted a 3.74 ERA with 9.1 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9 in 171 innings as a rookie last year. -

I agree, I was just thinking if that trade were an option this year (if Lawrie was still in the system) who would blink first. -
Long-term extension for one: Greinke or Marcum?
Menace II Sobriety replied to adambr2's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I know this post is pointless in several ways but if the Melvin would not have traded for Marcum (even though Lawrie would than have been used in the Greinke deal) . I think Pineda could have been had this offseason. Of course this would have changed the whole dynamic of last season and all of that. But if Lawrie performed for the Crew like he did for the Jays I doubt he would have been traded but that was a once in a 4-5 year trade and I would love to have that kind of talent locked up for several years at a reasonable price. This is the exact trade that many posters on here always call for. -
I agree with all of your post. For a team that won 96 games last year it is amazing that they could have 4 new starters in the field this year. Individually you can look at each piece and see how it could or should be an upgrade, but that is a lot of new pieces to a team that has been hesitant over the last few years to make major changes. This is no longer the team that had all of those home grown players that we rooted for at league minimum. With the way the team is structured currently I would like to work in 1 new position player per year, 1 rp per year and a SP every 2 years. I realize this isn't possible but in theory this would allow you to have control of 6 positional players at a time with 3 being in arbitration and 2-3 starters under team control during their first contracts.

Just got a new laptop for x-mas. I am waiting for it to be delivered to learn what model it is, all I know is that it is an HP. Anyways I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion for a deal on an antivirus software during all of these sales (or a free version online)? Thanks

Please do not sign Fielder thread
Menace II Sobriety replied to Hammer's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Epstein doesn't have anything to prove next year. IMO the last thing he should do is try to make a splash and add another 6-7 year contract onto those bloated contracts they have. The Cubs are not going to win next year no matter what, so if I was in his position I would wait it out and keep the contracts limited to 1-2 year deals and get Votto or trade for a 1B few years when it will put them over the top. The Cubs have a lot of holes and 1 signing won't fix them. You can make a change in the direction of the club by being fiscally responsible. With Soriano, Z, Fukudome coming off of the books I would align the team to contend in 2-3 years. They are going to build from within the same way the Red Sox and Yanks do by overspending in the draft, this will allow them to draft some players that could be up in that same time frame if the new CBA doesn't change how the draft is operated. As for Fielder it's obvious he is going to chase the money I would just rather not face him 18 times or whatever for the next few seasons. -
What is Marcum's trade value?
Menace II Sobriety replied to paul253's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
I disagree, according to the latest elias updates Marcum is a type A free agent and not by a little margin he is ranked 8th in the NL. This would make obviously mean he is worth 2 extra picks to any team that acquires him. I don't want to trade Marcum but if they did he has some serious value. Just because he is viewed as a #3 on this team doesn't make him a 3 on all teams. Also it was kind of funny to see the guy ranked right below Prince is Hart. I realize the Prince had a down year last year and the last 2 years are weighed heavily on the Elias rankings but 9th ranked guy on the list for 1st and OF. edit: forgot to add the link http://www.mlbtraderumors...ias-rankings-update.html -
My buddy was right behind her (3rd row) at the game last night and I sent him the deadspin article and this was his response. That was wild....she got interviewed by Channel 12 news while we were sitting 3 feet away. There were 50 year old guys coming up to her left and right. We didn't know who the hell she was, figured it was a player's wife or some sort of local celebrity. Come to find out it's some smokin' hot 42 year old house wife that is now the latest craze in Brewer Nation??

Wily Peralta's looking good
Menace II Sobriety replied to prophet's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
And if Melvin thinks this he is completely wrong, especially with pitchers. The flame out rate is too high to not get every penny you can in a signing bonus. If that means you start your professional career a couple months late, so be it. I said all of this in my post, the players have all the right in the world to negotiate for every dollar they can get. Maybe I should have left out the second part of the sentence but it would (IMO) benefit the majority of players to get their feet wet the season they are drafted. For most players it is a big lifestyle change where they move to Boondocks Monatana away from all friends and family for the first time ever. It can't hurt to give them a 4-5 month window to get used to that, let them go where they go next season and so on. edit: I have no idea where Monatana is but I am willing to bet it is farther away than Montana. -

Menace II Sobriety replied to prophet's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
It's not bogus as to how signing early could help the development of a player and get him to the big leagues faster. At the same time the players that got drafted have earned the right to negotiate up until that deadline to get themselves the best deal possible. If anything they should move up the signing deadline because most negotiations for 1st rounders barely start until the last couple of days anyways so all of the negotiations are on an arbitrary schedule. I think that Melvins' main point was that signing early can get you to the big leagues and the big money quicker (admitting that the player needs to think like this is his one chance to get paid). In my opinion getting your first major league contract out of the way and than getting into a few professional ballgames would be best for a player the year he was drafted. Even if they only pitch in 3-4 games and go a few innings per game. This would allow them to get to know the people within the clubhouse, franchise, and community. After a few outings they could be shut down and have an entire offseason to digest all of this and be ready for next year, or they could sign late and have to digest it all come March and April. -

The thing is the Brewers are not going to get a 1st round pick for Prince. The teams that can sign Prince and will have interest in him will be teams with protected picks. So that means the Brewers will get a supplemental draft pick and a 2nd round pick if either the Orioles or Cubs sign Prince. Will that player in the supplemental draft pick be equal to Prince? I don't believe the Brewers are going to get much of any value unless someone like a Josh Bell drops out of the first round. Even with someone of Bell's talent wouldn't be in the majors for another 3-6 years and realistically you are looking at 5 years. The second round pick may not be all that great either. That's my point, after the Sheets and C.C. thing a few years ago and watching the Rays get 11 of the first 65 or so this year while losing Prince for only a supplemental and a 2nd rounder would hurt. I guess it is the cost to have a great season. -

I am going to use the K.I.S.S. method on this for myself so that way 4 or 5 words out of a 2 paragraph post can't be misinterpreted. Prince has 3 values going into the off season. 1. Free market value (tbd) 2. Perceived value to fans (6 months of debate) 3. Value to Mark A. (the most important) My main concern is that if Prince leaves we get the picks that should be garnered for such a quality player. -

Menace II Sobriety replied to Crawdaddy A1's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I agree with most of what you are saying, after being one of the best players on a mid-tier team for the last 6 years it should be a lot tougher to leave when the team gets to a top tier level. I don't want to throw out numbers as Mark A. has stated that he will pay extra for special players. I haven't made up my mind if this is a good thing for the team or not over the course of the hypothetical contract because we don't know how long it is or the monetary value. Blanket statements such as no more than 5/90 are easy to say but we don't have the books to know how much is actually available, how much Prince helps revenue, if the crew makes the playoffs even one extra time over the course of the contract does that offset the cost (not only in actual gate receipts but also in market value of the franchise)? My main concern though is if/when Prince leaves the Brewers after this season all if not most of the teams bidding on Prince are in the bottom half of the standings this year, making the loss of Prince only worth a supplemental pick and a 2nd rounder. That would be a tough pill to swallow after the CC/Sheets thing a few years ago but right now I just want to keep winning games. -
I don't want to get into a semantics issue with you, that is why I used about 12 qualifiers in my post. I don't have time right now to defend the idea, but my post is simple when a person has 12k or 18k posts and most have definitive statements are meade ,when a declarative statement is used but not supported it is an opinion not a fact.
-
Just my personal opinion, not based at anyone directly. If a person who uses stats in the majority of their posts can't back up their posts with anything but conjecture their posts are not as valid. If a stat was present to prove that point it would be used, instead people try to using dominant and convincing words to prove the point when the stats are not available or cannot be found. The readers of this site get beat over the head with stats telling people why they are right or wrong so if a person who is a stat based poster makes a declaration without backing it up statistically a portion of the time they are passing off something as a fact that is merely an opinion.

Impressions of Roenicke so far (part 2)
Menace II Sobriety replied to PKBadger's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
So you believe that baseball players just go up to the plate and try to hit the ball hard without any context, scenario, or situation? If they get a grooved fastball or the exact breaking pitch they are looking for of course they try to hammer it, but to think that most players step up to the plate without a game plan in mind taking into the positioning of the defense is very hard for me to believe. -
Impressions of Roenicke so far (part 2)
Menace II Sobriety replied to PKBadger's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I think you are very wrong. If Nyjer comes to the plate and sees the 3rd baseman playing deep he will try to drop a bunt to that side. If there is an extra man in the infield and 2 guys filling the gaps most players would try to get the ball into the outfield anywhere except the gaps as that is where the outfielders would be. If there is a runner on second with less than 2 outs the first thing on their mind should be ground ball to the right side to advance the runner unless they get something to put a major swing on. Worst case scenario they advance the runner. Of course they want to hit the ball hard but the main concern is to hit for the situation for most players. Obviously a guy like Braun or Fielder hit away but for most teams 6 of 9 guys on the team have to hit for the context of the game. Teams only put the shift on the best hitters on a team and most of the time they try to beat the shift because an extra base hit is obviously better than your 4 hitter taking singles the opposite way that is why they leave it open for them. It should be obvious that every player in the MLB looks at the defensive alignment when they are walking to the plate and that effects how they approach their at bat. -
________ I will give you a handful but not a lot, players like Halladay don't grow on trees and won't waive their no trade unless they go to a top situation. Also that was a few years ago and I think the culture has improved over the last few years to where this is a destination to be now more than ever. ____________ As for demoting Hardy, I think that another problem was that it forced Melvin's hand. Instead of letting him play out the string, and possibly go on a hitting tear, by demoting him, Melvin made it 100% clear that he would have to move Hardy in a trade. I actually think that despite the 'extra year' angle, this hurt Hardy's trade value. _____________ One of the two was getting traded, the payroll was tight and Escobar was a top 20 prospect it wasn't shocking news that Hardy was on the block. A lot of people are bringing up Hardy's 4 WAR value so it could be said that Melvin didn't make the right move to acquire Gomez. But to say that they should let a guy in a funk play out a bad string in a dead season instead of calling up the top prospect who was a given to take over the next season is a tough call to make.
-
Sure this year Hardy would look great in a Brewers uni, however saying he would have been offered a contract extension after last year if the Brewers didn't manipulate his service time is far from a guarantee. He played in 115 and 101 games respectively the prior two seasons posting .229 .302 .357 .659 and .268 .320 .394 .714 ops . Also he gave credit for his bounce back season to his new hitting coach. Also I understand that people dislike the way his service clock was manipulated but the guy has only played over 120 games twice in seven seasons he was hurt an awful lot over that time. It's a tough business and if you can manipulate a super two it might be worth your while to play with service time for a player that won't be back next year. It might not be right but it didn't hurt the team in the long wrong compared to the good will they have brought on over the last few years.

Brewers draft picks in the CWS
Menace II Sobriety replied to CWSOmaha's topic in MLB Draft & International Signings
I agree, I was just trying to point out that he was still hitting the same numbers at points during the 4th. It's not like I am keeping a chart on his pitches. I re-read the entire thread today before I posted and I felt as though most posts were negative when none of us have really seen him pitch more than 2 or 3 games. My main point was that he was still hitting those numbers in the 4th. He hit them 4 times over 2 batters in the inning so if he threw 20 pitches he still hit that number 1/5 of the time if not more. When a poster has 5500+ posts such as yourself most people take them at their word and I just remembered him hitting that speed several times in the 3rd-4th innings.
